Inter vs Cagliari

Simone Inzaghi’s Inter continue to push towards their likely

Scudetto crown.

Monday night’s trip to Friuli to take on struggling Udinese

wasn’t without its tribulations though as the Nerazzuri had to

come back from behind to claim all three points on a night

when they weren’t quite at their brilliant best.

Substitute Davide Frattesi spared blushes in second half stoppage

time to claim the win and keep his side’s fourteen point

cushion at the league’s summit.

It is safe to say that the heavy and rather intense fixture list that

Inter have had to go through since the turn of the year is

starting to catch up with them and it also isn’t unreasonable to

suggest that some of their swagger has decreased slightly

since their rather cruel exit from the Champions League.

Whilst the league will be theirs if they win their next two matches

regardless of the results of their nearest challengers,

the real goal for Inzaghi’s team now is to try and officially win

the title when they face their city rivals Milan next week.

Both clubs sit on nineteen league titles and to beat Milan to

the treasured ‘second star’ would be iconic if it was to be

done by defeating them.

Of course none of that means anything if they can’t get

past relegation threatened Cagliari first.

Claudio Ranieri’s men pulled off the upset of the weekend by

defeating Champions League chasing Atalanta but despite such an

excellent result they find themselves well

entrenched in a scrap for survival.

The mammoth task facing them is something they are well

aware of as Inter remain the side with the best home record in

the league whilst only Frosinone have picked up less points

away from home than the Sardinians.

Whilst Inter are tiring and aren’t quite at their brilliant best

that we’ve seen during parts of this season, they should have

enough to overcome a spirited Cagliari.

It’s hard to see Ranieri getting any points on his return to

one of his former clubs.

Prediction: Inter 3-0 Cagliari

Torino vs Juventus

The second edition of this season’s Derby della Mole takes

place this weekend and it is sure to be its usual feisty self.

Unlike the derbies that take place in Milan or Rome,

this one is very one sided which only stokes the fire even more

that burns between these two.

The visitors Juventus are the country’s most successful outfit

having lifted the most domestic honours even with some of those

being asterisked due to their involvements in various scandals.

Forever in their rather large shadow are their nearby neighbours

Torino who haven’t been able to reach the heights of their

late great Grande Torino side of over half a century ago.

In modern times, Juve have held a serious stronghold over their

rivals with them currently unbeaten in this fixture

since 2015 over a whopping nineteen meetings.

Torino hate their guts and it isn’t hard to see why.

They will also come into this one with a little extra ammunition given

their disappointing stoppage time defeat in their last fixture

against Empoli on Saturday night.

Their talismanic forward Duvan Zapata looked like he’d

rescued at least a point on two occasions, only to see his and

his side’s efforts thwarted by former Granata striker M’baye Niang,

who poked home a last minute winner for the strugglers.

Juve failed far better and picked up three key points in their

quest to retain a comfortable place in the top four and return to

Champions League football next season.

A plucky and almost rather vintage Max Allegri 1-0

win did the job over Fiorentina.

If this one goes true to form, it has 1-0 Juventus written all over it.

However, surely it is time that Torino got some bragging rights in

this game and they know that anything but a win will mean

they’re consigned to mid table obscurity for another season

which in turn will all but guarantee the departure of

their impressive coach Ivan Juric.

Have they enough to topple their unbeatable neighbours?

Prediction: Torino 0-1 Juventus

Sassuolo vs Milan

Sassuolo have been without a doubt the biggest

disappointment of the 2023/2024 Serie A season.

The Neroverdi have won the hearts of the neutrals on countless

occasions since their arrival at the top level of Italy football in

2013 but this year their fairy tale is threatening to come to

an abrupt end.

After finishing as high is sixth in what is their first ever stint in

the top flight, Sassuolo have been a welcomed addition to

the top table and have built platforms for the likes of

Francesco Acerbi, Mateo Politano, Lorenzo Pellegrini,

Gianluca Scamacca, Hamed Traore and then more recently

Davide Frattesi to go on and make moves to big sides.

They’ve also given chances to coaches such as

Eusebio Di Francesco and Roberto De Zerbi and have helped

nurture the talent of their most heralded son Domenico Berardi,

who was a key part of Italy’s Euro 2020 winning side.

In order for them to survive and keep blossoming they had to

sell and replace and this year that tactic hasn’t worked and

they find themselves second bottom with just seven games to

save themselves from an unthinkable relegation.

Milan come to them this weekend as motivated as ever as

they want to stop their city rivals beating them to the title and

much coveted ‘second star’ next weekend.

Their coach Stefano Pioli is a former manager of Sassuolo himself and

whilst he respects his former club, he has no interest in granting

them any favours here.

With an angry Rafael Leao chomping at the bit to prove

Antonio Cassano wrong following their public squabble in midweek,

it’s hard to see Milan arriving at the Mapei in

any other mood than ruthless.

All season long people have labelled Sassuolo too good to

go down and have thought that they’d pull themselves out of the

mire yet they still find themselves second bottom at the time of writing.

Can they finally start a revival under survival specialist Davide Ballardini

or is the Milan steam train going to run through them too?

Prediction: Sassuolo 1-2 Milan

Napoli vs Frosinone

Napoli finally looked like they were getting things together prior to

their defeat to Atalanta a near fortnight ago.

A great draw at San Siro away to Inter caused murmurs of a

revival but their brutal home defeat to Gasperini’s La Dea was

a huge blow that has made Europe seem like a tall order now.

Luckily for them, some momentum has been salvaged thanks to

a comeback win over Monza last time out in which

Mateo Politano scored one of the goals of the season via a

thumping volley from just outside the area.

Whilst Champions League football looks almost out of the question,

the Partenopei are now just two points outside of Atalanta

who occupy the Conference League space.

A win here could set them up nicely for a return to the

European places should results go their way.

Lowly Frosinone arrive in Naples on the worst run over the last

fifteen games in the entire league.

The Canaries have picked up just seven points in that time and

are staring down the barrel at an immediate return to Serie B.

Back in August things seemed so positive as life in the top

flight started well for Frosinone and in the reverse fixture it

was Eusebio Di Francesco’s side who emerged with some real plaudits

for their brave attempts at stifling the current Scudetto holders.

Napoli haven’t had the best season by any imagination but

they know that they have a real chance to salvage some pride over

the last run of games and try and at least bring some form of

European football to Naples next year.

It is very hard to see them coming up short against the

league’s second leakiest defence who simply seem to have

lost their way entirely.

Prediction: Napoli 3-1 Frosinone

Atalanta vs Verona

Atalanta simply cannot quite get over the line in terms of their

attempts to guarantee themselves European football next term.

Whilst the idea of them becoming regulars in continental

competition is a dream that they could only have imagined a

decade ago, it can’t help but be felt that Gasperini’s team

should perhaps be doing a little better at consolidating

their spot amongst Italy’s elite.

An amazing run just past the new year saw La Dea win six out of

seven matches in the league before they then embarked on

a rather brutal run of games that saw them have to take on Milan,

Inter, Bologna and Juventus in successive matches.

Failure to win any of those games saw them drop out of the

top four and despite their impressive win over Napoli recently,

last weekend’s loss to basement side Cagliari exposed the side’s

flaw which is their inability to play their best football

over enough of the season to reach those top places

that their style of football deserves.

Gasperini deserves immense credit for the way he has built

the club and evolved his side over the past eight years

but one can’t help but feel they should be able to do a little more

and sneak into the top four permanently.

A game against Verona represents an opportunity to bounce back.

The North East outfit are well and truly entrenched in

the battle for survival and a poor result last weekend at home

to Genoa has put real pressure on the side knowing

they have some tricky games coming up.

They’re spirited and despite their struggles,

no side has truly thumped the Gialloblu all season.

Their main issue is their lack of goals as they’ve only netted

eleven on their travels all season and it’s safe to say they’ll have to

score at least one if they are to pull off a shock win here.

Logic says an Atalanta win.

Hellas will fight their hardest though.

Prediction: Atalanta 3-1 Verona

Udinese vs Roma

Udinese suffered a brutal blow in their quest for survival

on Monday night.

After taking an unexpected lead at home to the current league leaders,

they found themselves pegged back thanks to Hakan Calhanoglu’s

spot kick before then having their hearts broken in the 96th minute

as Nerazzuri substitute Davide Frattesi reacted first to

Lautaro Martinez’s shot being pushed onto the post by

goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

Inter weren’t anywhere near their best and it looked as

if Udinese had weathered the storm and managed to sneak

at least a point in a game they thought they’d have no chance in.

The manner of the loss will hurt and it may have to see

Gabriele Cioffi work some magic to pick up the morale of

his struggling side who missed a real opportunity to drag

themselves up the table.

The Friulian outfit sit just two points above the bottom

three and will have to face another top side in Roma this weekend

and fight tooth and nail once again to pick up points.

Roma are coming into this off the back of a win in

the derby over Lazio and despite looking a little tired in recent weeks,

now find themselves as the nearest challenger

to Bologna in the quest to finish fourth and obtain Champions League

football for next season.

The thought of such simply didn’t seem possible at the turn of

the year as the turgid style being turned out by

José Mourinho’s version of Roma looked destined to fall short.

His replacement Daniele De Rossi has worked wonders and

should surely be given the job permanently in the summer.

Expect his side to escape from Udinese’s clutches in similar

fashion to Inter on Monday.

It’ll be close but they should have enough to win.

Prediction: Udinese 1-2 Roma

Bologna vs Monza

Bologna’s quest to break the norm and finish in the Champions League

places shows no sign of slowing down.

Eight wins out of nine prior to their draw away at Frosinone

last time out has given Thiago Motta’s team a three point cushion

over their nearest challengers Roma.

They also perhaps more crucially find themselves with a ten point

gap over Napoli in seventh, meaning that they’d have to

monumentally collapse from now until the end of the season to

miss out on some form of European football qualification.

The side from the Renato Dall’Arra have without a doubt been

the league’s breakout story this year which has led to rumours of

their key players being targeted by traditionally bigger sides and

even their manager has been linked with a move.

The top media outlets across Italy have claimed that Juventus

have come to an agreement in principle to steal Motta and

appoint him as a replacement for Max Allegri.

Whilst these remain just rumours for now,

it will be interesting to see what unfolds.

Monza’s successful season has seen their young manager

Raffaelle Palladino also linked with a move away from the club

with the likes of Napoli said to be sniffing around.

It has been great to see Monza build on last year’s start to

Serie A life and in Palladino’s first full season at the helm

they’ve pushed on and given the much bigger sides a run

for their money.

All this without the services of attacking midfielder Gianluca Caprari

who hasn’t played since September due to a knee ligaments injury.

Bologna have the league’s second best home form with

only Inter picking up more than their 38 points on home soil.

Monza won’t arrive with the sole intention of frustrating

their opponents and will want to take some points in their

quest to try and finish in the top half of the league.

This game however may be a step too far.

typical of La Viola as in both games they had more than enough

chances and held plenty of possession but could not provide

a killer instinct when it really mattered.

Just one league win in their last seven matches and

two in twelve has seen an alarming drop off from some of the

excellent results and performances that the side obtained in the

first half of the season.

Such a fall has led to speculation that there could be a parting

of ways between the club and coach Vincenzo Italiano

who despite his success at bringing the side back into

European contention and reaching the final of

last season’s Europa Conference League,

that he may well have taken the side as far as he can.

Travelling to face them at the Artemio Franchi are a plucky and

difficult side in the form of Alberto Gilardino’s Genoa.

The former Fiorentina striker is another highly rated young coach

After inheriting a falling giant from Alexander Blessin and taking them

Gilardino has then established his side in the top flight this

Defeats for the likes of Udinese and Verona coupled with

Sassuolo and Frosinone only managing draws,

Lecce’s slender three point cushion over the drop is made better

due the fact there’s three teams between them and

the final relegation space.

This weekend they take on one of those three sides in

the form of Empoli.

Unlike Lecce, Davide Nicola’s Empoli arrive on the south east

coast off the back of a vital victory thanks to M’ Baye Niang’s

last gasp winner at home to Torino, a game in

which Gli Azzurri had to come back from

behind to steal all three points.

The impact of their coach cannot be underestimated as

he has managed to get something out of a team that neither

Paolo Zanetti nor Aurelio Andreazzoli could earlier in the campaign.

The win over Torino was key as the side had gone on their

worst run since the arrival of Nicola due to defeats to the likes of

Inter and Milan.

This game is a proverbial ‘six pointer’ in the sense that should

a side win, they take three points off of their rival and either

leapfrog or pull clear of them.

Lecce will be hoping that home advantage helps here and

will believe that under their recently appointed coach,

they have enough about them to get some vital points.

Could M’Baye Niang start the game and add to his tally of

with strong affiliations to Claudio Lotito.

The current Lazio president had a vested interest in Salernitana

until their promotion to the top flight meant

he couldn’t own shares in two clubs in the same league.

The likes of Jean Daniel Akpa Akpro, Cedric Gondo,

Andre Anderson and Djavan Anderson have all been traded

between the two clubs in recent years thanks to the Lotito connection.

You’d be hard pushed to find a Lazio fan who has found

source of European football next season should they manage to

leapfrog sides around them and claim that spot.

A team well coached under Maurizio Sarri last term has

struggled to deal with the departure of Sergej Milinkovic Savic

as well as the drop off from the likes of Ciro Immobile and

Felipe Anderson who both look to

have had their best days in light blue.

The appointment of highly rated Igor Tudor to replace

Sarri has been wise as his last stint in Italy with Hellas Verona

saw him build an attacking side that got the best out of

his forward players yet maintaining a solid defence at the same time.

It will be a good chance for Laziali to see their new manager’s

philosophy in full swing against a side they should be able to

overwhelm in the form of the league’s bottom team.

On manager number four of the season at the time of writing,

Salernitana require a miracle if they’re to stay up.

The league’s leakiest defence have had a season to forget and

look set to return to the

second tier after a three season stay in Serie A.

Whilst Salernitana managed to shock their opponents in

the previous meeting between these two this season,

it is very hard to imagine them pulling off the same trick here.
