into the relegation zone. 

VfL Wolfsburg, in particular, 

will be ruminating over their indecision in the managerial position.

As early as November Niko Kovac’s job looked in jeopardy, 

yet Wolfsburg held onto the Croatian until mid-March 

when the reality of a relegation battle was inescapable. 

Between matchday 7 and matchday 26 Wolfsburg 

won just 2 Bundesliga matches, 

leaving the newly appointed Ralph Hasenhüttl 

with a mammoth task ahead. 

The ex-Southampton and RB Leipzig manager 

won his first match in charge against Werder Bremen, 

but two successive defeats against Borussia M’gladbach (1:3) 

and RB Leipzig (3:0) have sunk Die Wolfen back 

into the thick of things. 

Wolfsburg’s defensive ineptitude is a new-found issue, 

but the inability to capitalize or create chances is a problem 

that has followed them all season. 

Wolfsburg have not scored 3 goals 

in a single match this campaign, 

and the club’s top goalscorer, 

Jonas Wind (9 goals) has not scored 

in his last 17 appearances in the Bundesliga. 

For VfL Bochum, the threat of relegation is even larger. 

Bochum have not won any of their last 6 Bundesliga fixtures 

that included a relatively modest run-in against the likes 

of FC Köln, Mainz 05, SV Darmstadt, and FC Heidenheim. 

Since last week Bochum have a new manager

on the touchline by the name of Heiko Butscher, 

but there are question marks over his credibility 

to lead the West German outfit to safety. 

The 43-year-old has never held a job in senior football 

(formerly VfL Bochum U19 Coach), 

and he was not the first choice 

after former Borussia Dortmund and 

FC Köln manager Peter Stöger declined Bochum’s approach. 

Stabilizing Bochum’s rocky defence will be one 

of his most important tasks, but going forward, 

the Ruhr outfit do have some attacking potential. 

Bochum have scored at least 1 goal in 11 

of their last 12 league outings, and in Keven Schlotterbeck, 

they have the most prolific goalscoring centerback 

in Europe’s top 5 leagues!

but Edin Terzic’s side have routinely made up 

for their Bundesliga deficiencies with stellar displays

in the UEFA Champions League. 

Tuesday evening was no different, 

with Borussia Dortmund turning a 2:1 away leg deficit 

on its head with a sensational 4:2 victory in the Signal Iduna Park.

The victory over Atletico Madrid sees Dortmund draw 

into the Champions League semi-finals

for the first time in over a decade. 

Across the pitch Borussia Dortmund were at their very best, 

but it felt like no one could top the performance 

of the influential Marcel Sabitzer. 

The Austrian international has looked reborn 

since inheriting an advanced midfield role in the new year, 

flourishing with final third impact as Ian Maatsen’s arrival 

has alleviated him from contributing to build-up phases. 

Sabitzer registered 1 goal and 2 assists on Tuesday, 

becoming the first Austrian to ever contribute 3 goal contributions 

in a single Champions League knockout stage fixture. 

Hoping to deliver Borussia Dortmund 

another domestic setback are the newly-crowned 

Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen. 

The title triumph looked a long time in the making, 

but it was nevertheless a moment of ecstasy 

in the Bay-Arena when referee Harm Osmers 

blew the final whistle last Sunday. 

From the final matchday collapse in 2000, 

to the treble disaster in 2002, Bayer Leverkusen and 

their fanbase have suffered almighty 

for their first major triumph in over 30 years. 

The ensuing pitch storm, and flood of tears, beers, 

and cheers was the only befitting way 

for Die Werkself to celebrate a league title 

which has been over 40 years in the making. 

To finally confirm their place as champions 

will ease the pressure on Xabi Alonso’s outfit, 

but anybody who thinks they will take their foot off the gas 

has not seen enough of this side this season. 

One does not go over 40 matches in a row unbeaten 

by allowing complacency to creep in. 

This side has unrivalled depth to continue the onslaught 

in 3 competitions, and the work is not done 

in the Bundesliga as Bayer Leverkusen 

are only 4 matches away 

from becoming the very first side 

to ever go an entire campaign unbeaten in the German topflight.

of their season this weekend. 

4 points separate Köln from the relegation playoff spot and 

this weekend’s home match against SV Darmstadt 

must provide nothing less than 3 points. 

Die Lilien are winless since the 7th of October, 

and are all but mathematically relegated. 

Torsten Lieberknecht’s side have conceded 13 goals

more than any other side in the topflight this campaign, 

but against FC Köln they actually

have the more prolific attack on paper. 

FC Köln failed to score for the 12th time on Saturday, 

and with only 23 goals, 

they have the worst attack in the Bundesliga. 

Top scorer Davie Selke has already been ruled out 

for the remainder of the season with a recurring foot injury, 

leaving an otherwise harmless front line

to pickup the slack in his absence. 

Faride Alidou and Luca Waldschmidt are now the only fit players 

who have scored more than once from open play this season.

defensive deficiencies in the side. 

Only Borussia Mönchengladbach have lost more matches 

after taking the lead this season, 

while only relegation-threatened SV Darmstadt and 

VfL Bochum have conceded more often this campaign. 

It would be easy to point a dubious finger 

at goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, 

however, the 33-year-old German international 

is consistently going above and beyond this campaign, 

having already made 15 more saves

than any other keeper in the topflight. 

Speaking of Borussia Mönchengladbach, 

they are the side faced with the trip to Hoffenheim this weekend. 

Despite spending almost 45 minutes with a man advantage, 

Die Fohlen were unable

to take any points off Borussia Dortmund last weekend. 

The 2:1 defeat is Gladbach’s 10th match without a win 

in their last 12 league outings, 

and the fears of relegation can not be extinguished just yet. 

Die Fohlen are just 5 points away from the relegation zone, 

and the roster is on its last legs

as an injury crisis sweeps through the squad. 

Jordan, Nathan Ngoumou, Stefan Lainer, Franck Honorat, 

and Nico Elvedi were all deemed injured 

following the match against Borussia Dortmund.

FC Heidenheim hail from a tiny village

with a population of 50,000, 

and less than 15 years ago the South-German outfit 

had never played higher than the regional 4th tier. 

That they have not only made it to the topflight, 

but survived in the Bundesliga with spectacular results 

along the way, is a testament to the stellar work 

of Frank Schmidt and the entire club staff. 

A side with all of the glamour, 

but none of the rags to riches allure 

are Saturday’s opponents RB Leipzig. 

Die Rotten Bullen are in a spectacular two horse race 

with Borussia Dortmund for the final Champions League spot. 

Marco Rose’s side are currently ahead on goal difference, 

and in stellar Bundesliga form with 5 wins and 

1 draw from the last 6 league matches. 

Loïs Openda remains an all-encompassing attacking outlet, 

but another player who has raised his output

in the new year is Benjamin Sesko. 

The Slovenian international has scored or assisted 

at least once in his last 8 Bundesliga starts. 

With two of the most exciting U23 talents RB Leipzig 

will always be favorites, however, 

Heidenheim have the qualities

to be a major stumbling block for Rose’s side. 

FCH are the 8th best home outfit in the division, 

and they have already taken points off of FC Bayern, 

VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Dortmund at the Voith-Arena. 

Prediction: RB Leipzig Win

Union Berlin v FC Bayern 

As of last weekend, the league title

is officially out of reach for FC Bayern. 

However, Der Rekordmeister’s season is far from a right off 

after progressing to the semi-finals in the Champions League 

for the first time since winning the competition in 2020. 

As so often this season, 

Bayern looked at their best in a counter-attacking outlook. 

Der Rekordmeister soaked up the modest pressure 

from FC Arsenal, and constantly looked to hit the visitors 

on the break through smart counter-attacks spearheaded 

by the surging runs from Noussair Mazraoui and Konrad Laimer. 

In the 64th minute, Bayern finally found the breakthrough 

with Joshua Kimmich storming into the box 

to score a powerful header. 

The 29-year old has stood under relentless media pressure 

this season, but his first Champions League goal of the season 

should silence those still doubting his qualities 

to compete at the top. 

Next up in the Bundesliga are Union Berlin. 

Nenad Bjelica has managed to restore the defensive fortitude 

in Berln since arriving in December, 

but the Croatian coach has struggled to get a tune out 

of the outfit’s attack. 

Union have only scored 13 goals from Bjelica’s 17 matches 

in charge, and for the 16th time this campaign Union failed 

to score over the weekend. 

Bjelica’s rigid 5-3-2 does not lend itself to attacking exploits, 

but he also hasn’t been helped by the winter sales 

of Keven Behrens and Sheraldo Becker. 

Neither have been at their best this season, 

but the pair clearly know where the goal is, 

combining for 19 goals and 9 assists in the 2022/23 campaign.

Prediction: FC Bayern Win
