Nantes v Rennes


Not all managerial switches in Ligue 1 have worked this season. 


Just ask Nantes. 


After replacing Pierre Aristouy with Jocelyn Gourvennec 
in November, the latter presided
over 10 defeats in his 15 games in charge. 


President Waldemar Kita turned to a former Canari 
to right the ship, Antoine Kombouaré. 


With two wins in his first three games, 
Kombouaré has eased the relegation
fears considerably at the Beaujoire. 


He is getting a tune out of players 
that had been underperforming, 
or in the case of Matthis Abline, 
who has two goals since the managerial change, 
had been underutilised under the previous regime. 


A last-gasp victory over Le Havre last weekend 
could prove vital in their bid to stay in Ligue 1. 


They are now five points above Breton rivals Lorient, 
who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot. 


After their last game, against Lyon, 
was held behind closed doors at the Beaujoire, 
fans will once again be allowed in on Saturday, 
which will further boost morale around the club. 


They need all the help they can get as Les Canaris 
have lost all of their last four encounters 
against their upcoming opponent, Breton rivals Rennes. 


Rennes' season has gone off the rails, again. 


The club have lost their last four in all competitions 
and all their momentum, driving them back 
towards the European places, has dissipated. 


The performance in last weekend's 2-1 loss 
against Toulouse was denounced by all echelons of the club 
with words such as "shameful", "inconceivable" and 
"catastrophic" used to describe the result. 


It is one that could do their chances of European qualification 
a lot of harm, not only because it allowed Lyon to leapfrog them, 
but also because they lost another key player in the process.


Enzo Le Fée was forced off in tears last week. 


His period of absence is currently unclear 
but it would not be a surprise to not see him again this season. 


Rennes will at least be able
to welcome Martin Terrier back for the fixture. 


The forward missed the defeat to Toulouse through suspension.


Prediction: Nantes 2-1 Rennes

This could very feasibly be the game that decides 
who finishes in second place this year. 


Brest came out the wrong side of an epic 
against Lyon on Sunday. Eric Roy's side thought 
they had the result in the bag when former OL 
forward Romain Del Castillo scored his second 
on the night to put Brest 3-1 up, however, 
Lyon hit back and secured all three points thanks 
to a penalty in the 107th minute. 


Post-match, Roy, as well as sporting 
director Grégory Lorenzi denounced 
what they saw as an injustice, with Brest on the receiving end
of some dubious refereeing calls. 


There is nothing they can do about
that but the result and the manner of 
it could certainly leave some mental scars. 


Will they have healed in time to face Monaco?


Les Monégasques come into the game fresh. 


The Principality club were one of six teams
that didn't feature in Ligue 1 action last week. 


They are therefore well rested and likely well prepared 
for what awaits them at the Stade Francis Le Blé. 


Adi Hütter's side could welcome Breel Embolo back to the team. 


With Wissam Ben Yedder struggling for form, 
the return of the Swiss striker bolsters Monaco's attacking options,
which are already plentiful. 


The only bad news for Monaco is the absence of Ismail Jakobs, 
who underwent minor surgery after coming off 
against Rennes just over a week ago. 


It is not known whether he will feature again this season. 


Caio Henrique returned to first-team training 
this week following his ACL injury but it may take him 
a few weeks to work his way back to fitness. 


In the meantime, Kassoum Ouattara
will fill in for the injured Jakobs. 


He represents a more attacking option, 
which could leave Les Monégasques 
in a more precarious defensive position.


Prediction: Brest 2-3 Monaco

PSG's motivation between now and the end 
of the Ligue 1 season is likely contingent upon the outcome 
of their Champions League encounter 
against Barcelona on Tuesday night. 


Luis Enrique's side head to Catalunya
with a one-goal deficit to overcome. 


The LFP, Ligue 1's governing body, 
have created the optimal conditions to allow PSG to perform, 
postponing last weekend's game against Lorient in order 
to allow the club to focus on their European challenge. 


Should PSG progress, the tactic of resting key players, 
notably Kylian Mbappé, in the league, will likely continue. 


However, Luis Enrique may re-think this in the event 
of an early exit. Regardless, there is little to play 
for between now and the end of the season for PSG in Ligue 1. 


PSG are destined to win the title - and at a canter. 


Brest's defeat last weekend only accelerates Les Parisiens' charge.


The team that beat Brest, Lyon, could keep the title race open
- at least mathematically speaking - a little longer. 


Unlike PSG, they now have everything to play for. 


A 4-3 win against Brest, secured in the dying seconds 
of the game, sees OL move up to seventh. 


Should they stay there, 
they would be guaranteed some form
of European football next season, regardless 
of their performance in the Coupe de France final. 


Their performance against Brest, at least the second half of it, 
was one of the most chaotic
that we have seen from Lyon this season. 


However, they have the offensive players 
to cause any team problems, especially 
when all the individuals are performing
at or around their peak, as they currently are. 


There was a boost for Lyon as well earlier this week. 


Alexandre Lacazette was forced off on a stretcher
on Sunday and OL feared the worst. 


However, he is set for an immediate return; 


he is in line to start against PSG. 


There are no fresh injury concerns for PSG, 
who have welcomed Bradley Barcola back to the fold. 


Prediction: PSG 2-2 Lyon

Nice v Lorient 


Nice stopped the rot - to an extent - a fortnight ago, 
Whilst they still have just one win in their last nine in Ligue 1, 
there were signs of progress. 


Their defence looked solid, as it had done prior to February, 
against Reims. Jean-Clair Todibo and
Dante will need to return to their best 
if Nice are to secure European football for next season. 


The problem is - and has always been - their attack. 


Unlike in recent weeks, 
Nice create a handful of high-quality chances 
against Reims but could simply not take them. 


It is a major problem and one that must be fixed, 
however, repairing a striker's confidence at this point 
of the season is no easy task. 


The performance was there at least and that gives room for hope.


Lorient are not the worst team to face if you're looking 
for a return to form. Les Merlus have relapsed slightly and 
are less efficient in both boxes than they were a month ago. 


Like Nice, Lorient have benefitted from a long break. 


They must be revitalised for their relegation battle, 
which is likely to go all the way down
to the last game of the season.


Prediction: Nice 1-0 Lorient

there was evidence of serious fatigue. 


This team may have run out of steam. 


Up front and in defence, 
there has been very little rotation this season especially, 
but also over the last two years. 


Kevin Danso, Facundo Medina and Jonathan Gradit 
have played almost every game
for Les Sang et Or in the last two years, 
including this season's Champions League matches. 


It looks unlikely that they can challenge 
the Champions League places 
but they should make light work of Clermont Foot. 


Pascal Gastien's side look destined for the drop. 


Still bottom of the table, 
the match against Montpellier felt like last-chance saloon. 


Clermont didn't lose but a single point
does little to further their cause. 


Players were involved in an altercation
with fans post-match as tensions rise. 


The writing is on the wall and Lens' quality 
will likely push them further towards Ligue 2.


Prediction: Lens 3-0 Clermont Foot

Luka Elsner's side looked distraught after the 1-0 defeat 
to Les Canaris but they must quickly dust themselves off 
for another encounter with a relegation rival. 


Against Nantes, Le Havre looked to be playing for a draw; 


against a Metz side, buoyed by their shock 2-1 victory over Lens, 
they will likely have a similar mindset. 


It is more important not to lose than it is to win. 


Le Havre will be cautious, Metz will smell blood. 


The difficulty for Elsner's side will be containing 
the in-form Georges Mikautadze. 


It is no easy job but they will certainly be motivated 
to accomplish that task.


Prediction: Le Havre 0-0 Metz

Lille will welcome Angel Gomes back to the side. 


The Englishman was injured in late March 
but has made a swift return. 


His return is a big boost, however, 
there are doubts about the fitness of star man Edon Zhegrova. 


The Bosnian winger has been highly influential 
throughout the campaign and 
with Adam Ounas seemingly out of the picture, 
his absence would be a big blow. 


However, Lille still have the quality and the momentum 
to beat a Strasbourg side that are now all but sure of safety. 


Patrick Vieira's side have hit their stride in recent weeks. 


Andrey Santos has been a phenomenal addition,
whilst Dilane Bakwa is also rightly earning plaudits for his performances. 


But it is now a question of motivation for RCSA. 


Safety is assured but the club cannot harbour
any ambitions of European qualification. 


Their season is, by all intents and purposes, over. 


Their performances could begin to reflect that.


Prediction: Lille 2-0 Strasbourg

It remains to be seen whether any will return
to the fold against Montpellier. 


Michel Der Zakarian's side are unbeaten in their last three games. 


This run comes at the perfect time. 


MHSC are now seven points clear of the relegation place. 


A victory against Reims and they will be all but safe. 


Given their improvements in all sectors in April, 
they are well placed to profit from Reims injury crisis
and cause an upset.


Prediction: Reims 1-1 Montpellier

Form would suggest that Le TeFéCé are favourites for this tie, 
even if they have nothing to play for. 


Out of form, Marseille are also contending with an injury crisis. 


Samuel Gigot, Chancel Mbemba, Leonardo Balerdi, 
Geoffrey Kondogbia and Jordan Veretout are all playing 
through various degrees of pain as they manage injuries. 


Gigot had an injection earlier this week to help him play 
through his injury against Benfica. 


They are forced to play as there are no alternatives, 
with their replacements also sidelined. 


It is a nightmare situation for Jean-Louis Gasset 
but one that has to be managed. 


For OM, attack will be the best form of defence and 
a victory against Toulouse is a must if they have any designs 
on returning to the Europa League next season.


Prediction: Toulouse 1-2 Marseille
