Rennes v Brest

After weeks of stagnation, even regression, Rennes got their

topsy-turvy season back on track thanks to a resounding win

over Breton rivals Nantes at the weekend.

Given the rivalry between the pair, the comprehensive

3-0 victory will taste even sweeter.

Next up is another Breton rival in the form of Brest.

Eric Roy's side represent an altogether different challenge for

Les Rennais but perhaps not one that they can't overcome.

Something has changed at Brest.

Having been one of the most reliable defences in Ligue 1 this season,

they have now conceded nine in their last three games in the league.

The change in fortunes coincides with a tactical tweak from Roy.

Against Metz, a match that Brest won 4-3, Steve Mounié and

Martin Satriano both played up front together.

It was the first time all season that the two players had started

together and whilst going forward, Les Pirates found it easier to

unpick defences, their own defensive solidity was compromised.

It was an interesting and entertaining experiment but it was

thought that Roy would then revert to type, starting one of either

Mounié or Satraino - not both.

However, that has not happened.

Against Lyon and then Monaco, there were spaces to exploit

- both sides had the quality to exploit them and duly did so.

As the race for the podium tightens and as Brest drop down to third,

tension is mounting and it is showing.

Brest, as an institution, but Roy in particular, have been critical of

refereeing all season but they have raised the tone in recent weeks.

Not only do Brest feel as though big sides are being favoured,

a conspiracy theory, suggesting that Monaco would be the

recipient of a favourable refereeing performance,

was also floated by the club.

Needless to say, Roy was once again critical of the refereeing

as his side slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Monaco,

despite the Principality club seeing two players sent off late on.

Rennes could be poised to profit from the chaos and paranoia

that is gripping the club during this tense run-in.

Prediction: Rennes 1-1 Brest

A comprehensive 4-1 defeat to PSG has

brought Lyon back down to earth.

There is no doubt how far Pierre Sage has brought the club

in recent months but the way in which his defence was dismantled,

time and time again, by Les Parisiens also shows how far

they still have to go.

Four first half goals ended the game as a contest prematurely,

despite key performers such as Kylian Mbappé and

Ousmane Dembélé not even setting foot on the pitch.

Sage has been criticised for altering his shape against PSG,

opting for an ambitious 4-2-3-1.

"There was an unbalance in the way in which we attacked and

defended," said Sage post-match, alluding to

a return to his favoured 4-1-4-1.

After three consecutive losses against Monaco, Lyon did, however,

beat the Principality club earlier this season.

The 1-0 win at the Stade Louis II in December amidst the club's

impressive and very immediate revival under Sage.

Monaco can be forgiven for being surprised by OL's level

during that encounter but there can be no excuses this time around.

Adi Hütter is aware that this is the "decisive week" of the season

and there is a strong motivation to wrap up that

podium spot and finish the season relatively serenely.

Against Brest, they showed an intensity, a desire and an energy

that was sorely lacking in the run-in last year and in this form,

any opponent will have to be on top form to stop them.

Prediction: Lyon 2-2 Monaco

Marseille are nearing the point of throwing all of their eggs

The major issue is the club's ongoing fitness and injury concerns.

more long-term absences, others such as Chancel Mbemba,

and even Samuel Gigot, who continues to take injections to

allow him to play through the pain, are being adding to

what is an already lengthy list of absentees.

Mbemba, who continues to struggle with a knee issue is

the latest to join the list.

There is hope that Jonathan Clauss and Ismaïla Sarr may soon

return to the fold, perhaps this weekend but

are they capable of playing three times a week?

At this point, with the squad in such a delicate and fragile state,

Jean-Louis Gasset may begin to prioritise and within

that context, could the match against Lens hold less importance

for Les Phocéens?

Lens, however, are a very beatable side on current form.

Could even an injury-hit Marseille side beat a full strength Lens outfit?

It is a possibility.

After a defeat to Metz, which was heavily criticised,

Lens then faced bottom side Clermont Foot.

Franck Haise's side only narrowly beat Clermont (1-0) and

fans voiced their displeasure, booing the home side and

in particular Elye Wahi, who is yet to justify the investment

that the club made in him last summer.

It has been a long season for Lens, who are not used to

competing in European football and there may be

an element of burnout, both emotional and physical.

Marseille will be looking to exploit that.

A torrid run of form now sees them occupy the relegation play-off spot.

There was an air of resignation in the voice of sporting director

Mathieu Bodmer this week, who in denying that Luka Elsner's

position as coach is not under threat, stated that the club

would "remain united" regardless of their fate at the end of the season.

It is a team lacking in quality but one that has also shown

collective strength during periods.

They will have to rediscover that collective strength to survive.

Prediction: PSG 3-0 Le Havre

He will be looking to continue his hot goal-scoring streak against Lille,

Their European challenge is petering out, hindered by an injury

crisis that is affecting key players, most notably Teddy Teuma.

However, this match is one that they will bank on winning and

should other results go their way, Reims could go as high as seventh.

They may not be the favourites for a European place

but they at least are still in the running with four games remaining.

His side are safe but one of the benefits of such a young side,

is that they will want to prove themselves and impress

potential recruiters before the end of the season.

Dilane Bakwa and even Andrey Santos, on loan from Chelsea,

fall into the category of young players that could make the step up

in the summer in the event of a string of good performances.

They face a Nice side who do truly have something to fight for

at the end of the season and having out-manoeuvred

Strasbourg earlier in the season,

they will be confident of repeating the feat.
