Inter vs Torino

It only seems right to pay tribute to Simone Inzaghi’s Inter

who have officially become champions of Italy this week following

their win over their bitter rivals Milan at San Siro on Monday night.

A night fraught with high octane action, red cards and a toxic crowd,

the Nerazzuri managed to get the better of their rather bitter and

angry rivals who couldn’t quite get the measure of

their opponents over the 90 odd minutes and even over

the course of the season in reality.

Goals from ex-Milan defender Francesco Acerbi and one time

Milan transfer target Marcus Thuram did the damage and

even despite a late goal from Fikayo Tomori, Inter looked in

control and never in any real danger of losing the game.

Inter have been simply fantastic all season long and

their style of football, pioneered by their ever improving and

tactically astute coach, has been the envy of not just the entire

league but for a lot of Europe as well.

A much deserved title for a coach who has earned his stripes over

the first five years of his managerial career and a Scudetto now

means he’s won every domestic honour you can win in Italy.

Whilst this weekend’s game against middling Torino isn’t one that

will have any bearing on Inter’s season in terms of the league table,

they will want to finish strong and gain as many points as possible,

with it still a possibility that they could break the 100 point barrier and

see it that they win the league with just one defeat to

their name all season, way back in September against Sassuolo.

With the blue and black side of Milan sure to be in party mode

for this one, Torino arrive at San Siro with absolutely nothing to lose.

It looks more and more likely each week that Ivan Juric is set to

depart at the end of the season so in any way possible

they will try and get positive results to keep him keen to change

his mind and stay will be well received.

Expect Inter to make a few rotations as some of their players

may be lacking sleep since Monday but they should have enough to

beat Torino and keep on at their quest to become comprehensive

champions this year.

They absolutely deserve it too.

Prediction: Inter 3-1 Torino

Juventus vs Milan

Two teams who gave it their best shot at trying to chase down

Inter in alternate spells over the course of this season now find

themselves ready tofight it out to finish second as we see

Milan travel to Juventus with the humiliation and anger of Monday’s

derby disaster still fresh in the mind.

Losing to their nearest rivals in the derby is bad enough

but to see Nerazzuri celebrations on their home turf in

what was their home fixture was too much to handle for some with

the stadium announcers playing music as loud as possible to

try and drown out the celebrations of their opponents.

With bragging rights well and truly in the hands of their blue and

black cousins, who now have an eternities worth of ammunition to

tease them with, focus now shifts to trying to salvage some

pride out of the season with a trip to Turin to face their nearest

challengers for a runners up space.

They will also have to do it without both Davide Calabria and

Theo Hernandez who were sent off in the latter stages of Monday’s

loss due to violent conduct.

It is expected that Alessandro Florenzi and Filipo Terracciano will

deputise in those positions.

Whilst Milan have been excellent since Christmas, Juve have lately

fallen off in the second part of the season with

their form since February nothing short of abysmal.

Since facing Empoli at the end of January, they’ve only won

in the league twice and despite reaching the Coppa Italia final in

midweek thanks to Arek Milik’s late goal against Lazio,,

it looks as if that dreadful run of form is going to see the side

part ways with their coach Max Allegri in the summer.

It’s crazy to think that the side that went toe to toe with Inter up

until that Empoli game has found

themselves so devoid of confidence ever since.

Two sides with hate and anger towards the new champions will

perhaps look at this season as a waste as neither have quite shown

their best enough to warrant even arguing they deserve to

have given Inter more of a fight at the top.

Both may change managers in the summer too.

Allegri for a glorious return to Milan anyone? Pioli to come in and

coach a side he represented as a player? Who knows.

Both teams aren’t at their best and are carrying too many scars.

This could lead to a classic but with them seemingly both lacking in

confidence, a stalemate seems more likely.

Prediction: Juventus 1-1 Milan

Napoli vs Roma

After a couple of weeks where we’ve seen some of the alleged

bigger sides face off with lesser opponents,

Napoli face off against Roma in the third match that sees six of the

so called Seven Sisters of Italian football go head to head this weekend.

Whilst neither team have quite been good enough to chase down

the Scudetto, they still have plenty to play for as the season

enters its dying embers.

The hosts Napoli have largely endured a season to forget as

they currently look set to hold an unwanted record for being

the weakest Scudetto defender in the three point era.

With a tally of just 49 points after 33 matches, the Neapolitans are

a world away from the side that blew the league to smithereens under

Luciano Spalletti last season.

Whilst Francesco Calzona has restored a little pride since his arrival,

they still find themselves sat outside the European slots at the

time of writing but a win over Roma in this one could well put

them within an outside chance of sneaking into

the Champions League spaces and most certainly drop them

into Europa League contention.

Roma’s dour first half of the campaign has been almost forgotten

thanks to the arrival of Daniele De Rossi.

The club legend has his beloved side all set for a place in the top five

and looking more and more likely to qualify for the Champions League.

With him now confirmed to be staying on next season,

it will be interesting to see if momentum can carry them through and

finish the season well and even try and win the Europa League,

one thing they fell at the final hurdle with last year.

Neither side will want to lose this as they still have plenty to play

for in terms of what they would call their aims at

this stage of the season.

One thing for certain is the fact that we will see a match that

contains two sides who won’t hold back and be content with a

dull and dour affair.

Should be a good watch.

If only to see the antics of the ever passionate and lively De Rossi on

the touchline who will want to get the best from the returning

Paulo Dybala.

Prediction: Napoli 2-2 Roma

Frosinone vs Salernitana

Frosinone are in huge trouble.

Their promising start to life in the top league in Italy has been

brought down to a crashing halt in recent weeks and

their run of form in the second side of the season has been

quite simply atrocious.

The Canaries have picked up just ten points from

their last twenty games in the league and have conceded at

a rate of more than two goals a game in that spell.

Their alarming fall off has largely come down to their inability to

keep clean sheets and alter their brave style into one

that preserves results rather than going all out expansive.

The only team who’ve picked up less points than

them over the course of the aforementioned twenty games is

Salernitana, who can be mathematically sent down to

Serie B if they lose this fixture.

Whilst the battle for survival at the bottom of the league has been

enthralling over the past few weeks and months with up to

seven teams finding themselves involved in the battle for survival,

Salernitana can never truly say

that they’ve ever had a chance of staying up.

Just two wins to their name all season, the side from Salerno

have gone through four coaches and

have scored the least amount of goals and conceded the most goals.

If Frosinone can’t win this game they are in serious trouble and

perhaps it could even be argued they don’t really deserve to stay up

if they can’t win at home against the league’s whipping boys

whilst their direct rivals have much tougher assignments this weekend.

Prediction: Frosinone 2-0 Salernitana

Lazio vs Verona

The Mattia Zaccagni Derby takes place at the Stadio Olimpico

this weekend as recently installed Lazio boss Igor Tudor sets

his new side up against his former employers Hellas Verona.

A successful but short stint with the Bentegodi based outfit saw

Tudor get the best out of players such as Gianluca Caprari,

Antonin Barak and Giovanni Simeone, who all went on to earn

sizeable money moves away and

line the pockets of the struggling Verona.

Since his departure, Verona have struggled and found themselves in

relegation battles in back to back seasons.

Last year they found themselves relying on a relegation play off

win over Spezia in order to stay up and despite some of their

brave heroics, the rather cash strapped side find themselves

just three points above the drop heading into this one.

They won’t find any favours given to them by Lazio here as they have

issues of their own to sort out.

The heights they enjoyed last season of second place are now

but a distant memory and in a season of transition,

the team are now looking likely to try and consolidate

Conference League football rather than push towards the

Champions League slots.

Verona need the points but their inability to score goals remains

their downfall and with a tie on the road at a ground at a ground

that they’ve only defeated Lazio on once in over thirty years,

it looks like a tough assignment.

Can they catch Lazio in a state of malaise or is their former

coach going to haunt them?

Close but the Laziali should be able to win it.

Prediction: Lazio 2-1 Verona

The ever inconsistent Fiorentina look ahead to a game against

Sassuolo knowing full well that they could stick the knife into

their opponents.

A win for La Viola could lift them to within two points of

the Europa Conference league spot as they chase the possibility of

playing in the competition for a third successive season.

However, they remain in this season’s edition and may feel that

by going one better than losing in the final as you did last year,

they may be able to qualify for the Europa League

that way as at the time of writing, a sixth place finish looks

unlikely as they sit seven points back from Atalanta who currently

occupy that position.

Knowing that perhaps their focus is on winning the ECL and

also their startling reputation to be frighteningly inconsistent,

relegation threatened Sassuolo will be praying

that they can catch La Viola on one of those off days and

steal some valuable points.

Sassuolo have been marginally better since Davide Ballardini replaced

Alessio Dionisi but in all honesty they simply cannot string any

run of form together at all that gives anyone any hope

that they can survive the dreaded drop.

A brave performance in a home draw with Milan built positivity as

they led twice and there was definitely a strong case to

be made for them doing enough to win the game.

Sadly, they followed that result up by being thumped 3-0 at home by

a Lecce team that should be able to beat.

Can they somehow drag a result from a tough trip to the

Artemio Franchi? A point might be more likely than all three.

Prediction: Fiorentina 2-2 Sassuolo

Bologna vs Udinese

Bologna look to be hitting the home straight in just the right form.

People have been waiting all season to see them drop off and

fade away but even injuries to key players can’t hold them back as

they remain in the driving seat for Champions League qualification.

Following his brave attempts to establish Spezia in Serie A,

Thiago Motta was given the reins at Bologna

with very little expectation.

An upper mid-table finish last year showed promise but

when they were stripped of last season’s top scorer Marko Arnautovic

by Inter, many expected a nothing season.

They couldn’t have been more wrong.

Exceptional coaching and a system that has brought the best out of

some players that had previously gone well under the radar

including the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Joshua Zirkzee and

Lewis Ferguson has seen the Italian former Inter midfielder now be

linked with the soon to vacant posts at Milan and Juventus

if rumours are to be believed.

Their home form has been a huge factor in their success and

only Inter can better it so it’s hard to imagine Udinese are too thrilled

to be coming over at the weekend.

A 1-0 defeat last time out to fellow strugglers Verona saw t

he end of Gabriele Cioffi’s second spell in charge in Friuli and

in his place has arrived Fabio Cannavaro

with the club’s hierarchy feeling that perhaps the former

Ballon D’Or winner can have the same effect on the team as

his fellow 2006 World Cup winner Daniele De Rossi has had on Roma.

However, anything but a win for Bologna here would be a huge shock.

Prediction: Bologna 3-0 Udinese

Whilst Atalanta’s cup exploits are continuing to earn them praise,

a place in the Coppa Italia final where they will face Juventus.

Their Europa League performances have also earned rave

reviews and rightly so but they are far from at their best in

league action of late.

Poor results against Cagliari and Verona have been avenged slightly

due to last week’s win away in Monza but if they are to have

any chance of catching up Roma and guaranteeing Champions League

football for next season, they must ensure that they find some time

for consistency in the league and be beating teams like struggling

Empoli at home.

Empoli have had a season to forget so far.

Whilst things have been rosier under the tutelage of Davide Nicola

thanthey were under predecessors Aurelio Andreazzoli and

Paolo Zanetti, Gli Azzurri have been blunt in front of goal and

their inability to score enough has given them a tough task in

the last few games if they are to guarantee their place in

the top flight for next season.

Just three points and two places separate them from a place in

the dreaded bottom three so they need points and quick

but not many manage to make it back from the Gewiss with points

as only five teams have managed more of a tally

than La Dea on home soil this term.

Atalanta should have enough to beat a weak Empoli attack.

Luca Gotti has well and truly understood his short term assignment

since taking over at Lecce in the middle of last month.

Inheriting a staggeringly out of form and underperforming side

rocked by the eventful sacking of Roberto D’Aversa,

Gotti found himself in the hotseat of a club in serious danger of

dropping out of the league.

The wily old campaigner has managed to work his magic though and

given the Via Del Mare outfit a fighting chance.

Other than a 3-0 loss at San Siro against Milan, he’s been unbeaten.

Three wins and a draw in his other games, including wins over direct

relegation rivals Salernitana, Empoli and Sassuolo have seen

Gotti’s side rise up to the lofty heights of 13th place and perhaps more

importantly, seven points clear of the dreaded trap door.

With five games to play including this one, it would now take a serious

disaster and other results to go dramatically against

them to see any chance of relegation.

This momentum that they’ve created under Gotti will carry them

into this weekend’s game with Monza with belief

that they can win and finish strong.

Their visitors may only be two places higher in the table

but sit eight points ahead and they haven’t even had the faintest

thoughts of relegation at any point this term.

Their well drilled and brace outfit coached by Raffaele Palladino have

enjoyed a season of consolidation which has been well received

across their ever growing fan base.

With them seemingly settled in mid table and facing a long journey

on their hands to take this game on, it’s hard to see them leaving

the south with much.

Gotti’s Lecce are full of confidence and

they should be able to flex that here.

This fixture last year was played out in Serie B and it looks possible

now that it may well be played in Serie A again next year

when at multiple points this year it didn’t look like

that would be the case at all.

Last season’s Serie B play off winners Cagliari struggled to adapt to

life back in the top flight with it taking them until October to

put any sort of points on the board.

Many speculated higher veteran coach Claudio Ranieri had run

his last race and bitten off more than he could chew by

taking his beloved Cagliari up to the top flight with

a squad built up of players borrowed from other sides and of a team

who snuck into the second division play offs late last year.

However, a change of fortunes, built around the ability to

win home games, has seen the Sardinians give

themselves a fighting chance.

Taking five points out of their last three games in matches

against Atalanta, Inter and Juventus has managed to propel

the side up to 14th and four points clear of the drop zone.

Survival now looks a lot more likely than it did pre Christmas

but their away form remains a constant worry and they won’t find

Genoa in a charitable mood.

Alberto Gilardino’s team haven’t even flirted with relegation

this year and their solid mid table campaign has been welcomed

by fans who oversaw years of struggle prior to their eventual

elegation to Serie B in 2022.

Powered by their young and exciting attacker Albert Gudmundsson,

they will want to finish strong and will make sure

that they’re still well up to the task of ensuring their first season back

in the top flight is one they can be pleased with.
