TSG Hoffenheim v RB Leipzig 

TSG Hoffenheim are stuttering their way towards the season’s end. 

Die Breisgauer are too far away to be dragged back 

into the relegation battle, but their turbulent run of form means 

they barely stand a chance of qualifying

for Europe at the season’s end. 

Since November, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side have looked flawed 

and calamitous defensively. 

Hoffenheim have not kept a cleansheet since September, 

and the 3:2 defeat to VfL Bochum was the third match 

in a row where Hoffenheim conceded at least 3 goals. 

It is easy to point a finger at goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, 

but the German international is routinely standing 

on his head to keep Hoffenheim in matches. 

Baumann has made over 20 saves more than any other goalkeeper 

in this Bundesliga season.

Perhaps the only reason why Hoffenheim retain an outsiders chance 

of sneaking into the UEFA Conference League 

is the solid attacking output that has regularly balanced 

their fraudulent defense. 

Only the top 5 sides in the division have scored more goals 

than Hoffenheim this campaign, with club-legend Andrej Kramaric 

adding a brace to his season account on Friday. 

The Croatian international is undoubtedly a Bundesliga legend 

at this stage of his career. 

Only 4 foreigners have scored more goals in Bundesliga history, 

while Thomas Müller and Marco Reus 

remain the only active Bundesliga players

with more goals in the division. 

A club with less history in the topflight 

than the Croatian international are RB Leipzig. 

The fact that Germany are almost certain to have 

a 5th Champions League spot next season has eased the pressure 

on Marco Rose’s side, but RB Leipzig nevertheless 

made a domestic statement last weekend 

with a resounding 4:1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. 

Die Rotten Bullen were scintillating in a counter-attacking 

approach that overran Dortmund’s midfield and backline. 

The strike duo of Benjamin Sesko and 

Loïs Openda both got on the scoresheet together 

for the fourth Bundesliga match in a row, 

but the true star of the show was Xavi Simons 

pulling the strings in midfield. 

The Dutchman assisted Openda’s equalizer, 

and was otherwise influential throughout 

with the most shots and most completed dribbles 

on the pitch. With 7 goals and 13 Bundesliga assists, 

Simons has been an unequivocal success in his rookie campaign. 

The question remains if RB Leipzig can extend his loan from PSG, 

or even purchase him on a permanent deal. 

With Simons regularly displaying performances 

like the one against Dortmund, it seems rather unlikely 

that his future will be in Leipzig next campaign.

VfB Stuttgart showed their undeniable quality again last weekend 

in a top-of-the-table clash against Bayer Leverkusen. 

Die Schwaben were the first side in the Bundesliga 

to go two goals ahead against Leverkusen this season, 

and were it not for controversy late in stoppage time, 

Sebastian Hoeneß would have become the first manager 

to take 3 points off of Xabi Alonso. 

The Leverkusen equalizer was scored almost 2 minutes 

after the assumed 5 minute stoppage time, 

and a handball occurred directly proceeding 

Robert Andrich’s poacher finish. 

To no surprise, Stuttgart were furious at fulltime. 

Star striker Denis Undav even packed out his best Jose Mourinho 

impression for the post-match interview

- ‘If I speak I am in big trouble’. 

Denis Undav wasn’t just a talking point at full time, 

but during the match he also made a statement, 

scoring for the third Bundesliga match in a row. 

However, it was his oft so reliable strike partner, Serhou Guirassy, 

who suddenly left multiple big chances go begging. 

The Guinean international took 6 shots at a combined xG of 1.4, 

yet, for only the third time in 2024, 

it simply would not go in for the 28-year old. 

With a 259 minute run without a goal, 

one could almost talk about a scoring drought for Guirassy. 

To put to rest any debate about his scoring consistency, 

a goal against FC Bayern needs to stand on the cards. 

Der Rekordmeister will enter Saturday’s fixture 

with the Champions League on their mind. 

On Tuesday they drew 2:2 with Real Madrid, and this Wednesday, 

the Santiago Bernabeu awaits for another historic European evening. 

FC Bayern had finesse and resilience as they took a 2:1 lead 

in the second half, but as so often this season, 

it was Kim Min-Jae who allowed an individual error 

to bring the opposition back into the match. 

The Korean international looked suspect for Madrid’s opener, 

and his decision to drag down Rodrygo in the penalty area

presented a gift for the Spanish visitors to equalize 

in the 83rd minute. 

Neither Eric Dier nor Mathijs de Ligt are renowned 

for their qualities in possession and, 

but their risk-aversion and defensive consistency 

have made them such an important duo for Bayern in 2024. 

In the elite circle, where matches are almost always decided 

by individual genius or calamity, FC Bayern can not afford 

to gamble at centerback with individuals 

who sway dangerously between genius and fool.

FC Köln are still alive in the relegation fight, 

but their survival is hanging on a thread following 

last Saturday’s 1:1 draw against Mainz 05. 

Köln were played off the park by a far superior Mainz, 

but the chances were nevertheless there for Köln to take all 3 points. 

Shortly after halftime Luca Waldschmidt scuffed a penalty 

beyond the post, and following a triple substitution 

in the 61st minute, FC Köln began to take control over the fixture. 

One of those introduced was Mark Uth, 

a former German international whose presence 

has been dearly missed by FC Köln this season. 

The 32-year old has spent almost 2-years sidelined 

with uninterrupted injury issues. 

Since the start of the 2022/23 season, 

Uth has featured in just 12 Bundesliga matches, 

leading to a considerable creative loss 

for the Bundesliga’s most harmless attack. 

It’s hard to foresee Uth playing a full 90 minutes any time soon, 

but FC Köln simply need to find a way to get the homegrown hero 

on the pitch as often as possible. 

Anthony Modeste earned the major plaudits 

for Köln’s Conference League qualification in 2021/22, 

but Mark Uth didn’t trail far behind with 5 goals and 8 assists. 

A return to European football looks like a distant fantasy for Köln, 

but a side still in contention are their upcoming opponents, SC Freiburg. 

Die Breisgauer looked on course 

for another important victory when they went into halftime 

with a 1:0 lead on Saturday, but a catastrophic second half 

saw them leave empty-handed against Wolfsburg. 

A 64th minute red card, and two goals beyond the 80th minute, 

set in motion Freiburg’s 11th winless match in the new year. 

With 40 points Freiburg currently occupy the all-coveted 7th position,

but Die Breisgauer will need to find another gear 

if they want to remain there when full-time is blown on this season. 

Since the start of the Rückrunde (the second half of the season 

in Germany) Freiburg have dropped off considerably. 

Only 5 sides have picked up fewer points since matchday 17.

Borussia Dortmund v FC Augsburg 

Borussia Dortmund’s two-faced campaign

took its latest turn this week. 

In the Bundesliga, Die Schwarz-Gelben were humbled 

as a lively Leipzig performance steamrolled their defense. 

Dortmund conceded 21 shots and 4 goals to take a top 4 finish

out of their own hands. 

However, just 4 days later, Dortmund provided an entirely

different image in their home leg of the UEFA Champions League. 

Terzić’s side needed a bit of luck, but the 1:0 victory 

over PSG had elements of technical and tactical mastery 

that have long eluded Dortmund in domestic competition. 

Particularly Dortmund’s wide tandem of Karim Adeyemi

and Jadon Sancho impressed. 

Adeyemi ran countless intensive meters to reduce 

ex-Dortmunder Achraf Hakimi’s impact on the game, 

while Jadon Sancho produced arguably his best display 

since re-signing for the club in January. 

The Englishman was a catalyst of creativity on the right flank, 

completing 11 dribbles across the 90 minutes. 

That’s a single-game record in this year’s competition. 

Hoping to face the domestic Dortmund rather 

than the lively European one are FC Augsburg. 

Following two succesive defeats, 

FC Augsburg’s own international aspirations 

have come to a grinding halt again. 

A 3:1 defeat in Frankfurt felt manageable for Augsburg’s fanbase, 

but losing 3:0 at home to Werder Bremen was less palatable. 

All 3 goals were scored by Bremen after halftime, 

with the oft-plauded Jess Thorup earning his fair share 

of criticism for the collapse. 

The Danish manager opted to move away from his tried

and trusted 4-4-2 at halftime,

introducing an additional centerback to form a 3-5-2. 

Patric Pfeiffer was supposed to bring more control

to Augsburg’s game in possession, 

but the fact that Die Fuggerstädter had never used a 3-man defence 

showed with an abysmal performance in the second half. 

There seems to be no debate which formation Thorup 

will roll out for this upcoming matchday. 

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund Win

VfL Wolfsburg v SV Darmstadt

VfL Wolfsburg could exhale again on the weekend, 

earning 3 invaluable points in an entertaining fixture 

with an exhilarating final 10 minutes. 

Despite entering the 80th minute with a 1:0 deficit, 

VfL Wolfsburg managed to turn the match in their favor 

with a sensational Maximilian Arnold freekick, 

and an even better long range strike 

from centerback Maxence Lacroix. 

Wolfsburg’s never-say-die attitude was worthy of all 3 points, 

but Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side were also definitely provided 

a helping hand by opponents SC Freiburg. 

In the 64th minute Kiliann Sildillia was needlessly sent off 

for a rash tackle, and in the 87th minute, 

with the scores level at 1:1, the Hungarian Roland Sallai 

slipped at the penalty spot to sail his spot-kick over the bar. 

The victory sees Wolfsburg move up to 12th in the table 

with a 6-point gap to the relegation zone. 

A victory over SV Darmstadt this Saturday could definitively 

see them arrive at safety. 

Following their own 1:0 defeat to Heidenheim, 

Darmstadt are now the first side to be relegated 

from this season’s Bundesliga. 

Though Torsten Lieberknecht’s side started the campaign 

in competitive fashion, a run of 22 matches 

without a win between October and mid-May meant 

they quickly assumed the status of a hopeless newly promoted outfit. 

Relegation always brings its frustrations, 

but Die Lilien will not be thrown off by a drop into the second tier. 

Their well-managed expenses and 

minimal squad costs offer a seamless shift back 

into the role of a competitive lower league aspirant. 

Prediction: VfL Wolfsburg Win 

볼프스부르크 vs 다름슈타트

VfL 볼프스부르크는 주말에 다시 숨을 내쉬며

With their second win in a row, 

Werder Bremen have moved back into European contention. 

It’s a testament to this lopsided European race 

that Bremen have so easily replaced relegation fears 

with international aspirations. 

A key reason for this improved output has been

the return-to-form of Marvin Ducksch. 

The German international has contributed 3 goals and

Last weekend’s 0:0 draw in Gladbach is a result befitting

of Union since the appointment of Nenad Bjelica. 

Die Eiserne have been stable at the back, but going forward, 

they look utterly clueless. Union have scored only 15 goals 

across the 18 matches since Bjelica’s appointment, 

and there is nobody in the squad who seems capable 

of providing a regular goalscoring account. 

Wingback Robin Gosens is the top goalscorer in the squad with 6, 

while the 5 strikers available have combined 

for just 8 goals all campaign. 

The winter departures of Sheraldo Becker and Kevin Behrens 

have been difficult, but nothing comes close to the decision 

to allow Jamie Leweling to leave on loan

for VfB Stuttgart ahead of the season. 

While Union Berlin struggle for a semblance of attacking threat, 

Jamie Leweling is on Champions League course

with 4 goals and 7 assists. 

Union’s upcoming opponents are deep in the relegation battle as well,

but they can at least count upon a creative talisman 

to offer them a cutting edge in the final third. 

Kevin Stöger provided the next masterful display on Friday, 

scoring twice against TSG Hoffenheim to give Bochum 

their first victory in over 2 months. 

With Stöger set to become a free agent in the summer, 

there is no concern that he will be able to remain 

in the topflight even if his goal contributions ultimately 

aren’t enough to keep Bochum in the first division.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayer Leverkusen

A week after narrowly being defeated by FC Bayern, 

the next goliath test awaits Frankfurt with the arrival 

of Bayer Leverkusen in the Deutsche-Bank Park Stadion. 

Frankfurt were comfortably beaten 3:0 in the reverse fixture back 

in December, and one could argue Leverkusen have only grown 

more dominant since then. 

However, the fact that Frankfurt are playing

at home shouldn’t be under-estimated. 

Die Adler are the 5th best home outfit in the division, 

taking 28 of their 45 points this season in front of their own crowd. 

Nor have these results exclusively come against inferior opposition. 

Eintracht Frankfurt slaughtered FC Bayern with 5 goals to 1 

in December, and they took a well-deserved 3:3 draw off 

of Borussia Dortmund in October. 

With the final two matchdays pitting Bayer Leverkusen 

against VfL Bochum and FC Augsburg, 

there is a strong argument that Eintracht Frankfurt 

will be the final side with a strong chance 

of toppling Leverkusen’s unbeaten campaign. 

The 46th match looked in grave danger last weekend 

as Leverkusen went 2-goals behind to VfB Stuttgart, 

but as so often, Die Werkself fought their way back

into the match with a late goal. 

Robert Andrich’s 96th minute equaliser is the 13th goal Leverkusen 

have scored beyond the 90th minute this season. 

If one expands this statistic to all goals beyond the 85th minute, 

Leverkusen have scored an overwhelming 21!

Of course there is an element of luck in this series, 

but at the same time, it is impossible to fault Leverkusen’s mentality 

and the utter confidence they seem to have at all times in a match.

Heidenheim are firm outsiders, but a final run-in against Mainz 05, 

SC Freiburg, and FC Köln pits them against direct rivals

or sides in a relegation scrap. 

Should Frank Schmidt’s side manage to take all 9 points, 

one can almost guarantee that this fairytale 

will take an international turn next season!

Mainz 05 may be playing like a European aspirant 

since the appointment of Bo Henriksen, 

but the troubles of a relegation scrap continue to loom large. 

Last Sunday’s 1:1 draw against FC Köln was ultimately too little 

for the performance that Die 05er brought on the pitch. 

Mainz dominated the opening hour, 

with the tantalising creative duo of Nadiem Amiri and 

Brajan Gruda proving far too good for their West-German rivals. 

Capatilizing on these early chances will be crucial 

when travelling to the Voith-Arena on Sunday. 

Heidenheim have taken 60% of their points at home this season, 

and they have routinely fought their way back into home matches 

with a strong second half performance.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were comfortably 2-goals ahead
