Why two fewer matches? 


Once again, just as they did in Matchday 29, the LFP
- Ligue 1's governing body - have decided to postpone 
the matches involving teams competing in European competition. 


With PSG facing Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final 
of the Champions League and Marseille facing Atalanta 
in the semi-final of the Europa League, 
the two side's matches have been postponed 
and will take place in mid-May. 


As a result, Nice and Reims, PSG's and 
Marseille's scheduled opponents this weekend, also get a break.

In-Depth Analysis


Lille v Lyon 


Lille have begun to look weary in recent weeks. 


The two-legged Europa Conference League tie against Aston Villa, 
which ended in defeat, took a mental and physical toll 
on Paulo Fonseca's side. 


Lille is a talented side but it isn't a side with a lot of depth. 


Fonseca has therefore shown great consistency 
in his starting XIs this season but there is now a physical toll 
that is beginning to tell. 


Nonetheless, LOSC put in a positive first-half display 
against Monaco, although they did wear off 
as the game progressed and then showed character 
to bounce back against Metz, 
having gone one goal behind early-on. 


It was announced over the weekend that Adam Ounas, 
whose contract expires at the end of the season, 
will not play again for the club this season. 


Edon Zhegrova has dazzled this year 
but he looks like a player perhaps in need of a break. 


Without Ounas, that will not happen. 


He, like other key players such as Jonathan David, 
will have to therefore retain their levels until the end of the season, 
which is no simple task.


They will come up against an enthused Lyon side. 


After a 4-1 defeat to PSG the previous weekend, 
Pierre Sage's men showed the perfect response against Monaco. 


Lille are a side that pose similar problems and 
possess similar qualities to Les Monégasques, 
and this therefore feels like a game tailored 
for the likes of Angel Gomes and Zhegrova to shine, 
particularly in transition, just as Maghnes Akliouche did last weekend.


Prediction: Lille 2-2 Lyon

resonated around Roazhon Park last weekend 
after a spectacular 5-4 victory over Breton rivals Rennes. 


Lillian Brassier's 96th-minute winner for Brest 
has secured some form of European football 
for next year for the Breton side, 
who had been heavily tipped for relegation. 


There were scenes of euphoria post-match, 
both in the stands as players celebrated with fans, 
and in the dressing room. 


"I lost my voice," admitted Mathias Pereria Lage. 


However, the job is not done yet and there is still some way 
to go before Champions League football is secured. 


The big question is whether we will see a hangover 
from those celebrations last Sunday. 


Once again, it is another Breton derby for Brest and so, 
even putting aside the potential ramifications of the encounter, 
motivation will be high. 


Another exciting game is in store. 


Since Eric Roy made the choice to play Steve Mounié and 
Martin Satriano together, it has been chaotic. 


In their last four games, 
they have scored more than in their previous nine. 


There has been a change of tac at the Stade Francis-Le Blé and 
whilst it has certainly engendered a defensive fragility, 
there is no sign of Roy turning back. 


The handbrake is off as they drive towards the Champions League. 


Nantes certainly have something to play for themselves. 


Three points above the relegation zone, 
they may feel that three points could be enough to ensure safety. 


With Matthis Abline once again on the scoresheet last week, 
their striker is performing at the key time, 
in the absence of star man Moses Simon. 


Given how Brest's games have gone in recent weeks, 
Abline will be confident of adding to his tally.


Prediction: Brest 3-2 Nantes

Monaco v Clermont


Monaco could have got the job done. 


After beating direct rivals for the podium places 
in what was described by manager Adi Hütter as a "decisive" week, 
Monaco went on to lose against Lyon on Sunday night. 


A victory would have given Les Monégasques
significant breathing room, as it is, they have Brest and 
Lille breathing down their necks once more. 


However, there were positive signs and their defeat to Lyon, 
which came courtesy of a late Fofana goal, 
alluded to an element of fatigue creeping into Monaco's game. 


That would be understandable given that they faced Brest, 
Lille and Lyon within the space of just seven days. 


Hütter's men will be significantly fresher 
against Clermont Foot next Saturday and 
with Wissam Ben Yedder showing a return to form against Lyon, 
the omens are positive for a bounce back
and at this point of the season, 
three points could just clinch that Champions League spot 
that the Principality club so desire. 


However, a victory is by no means a given. 


Clermont Foot gave themselves hope with a shock 4-1 victory 
over Europe-chasing Reims at the weekend. 


Whilst Pascal Gastien's side remain rock-bottom of Ligue 1, 
safety remains a mathematical possibility
- as long as that remains the case, 
Clermont Foot will continue to fight. 


Prediction: Monaco 3-1 Clermont Foot

Other Games


Toulouse v Montpellier


Montpellier occupy a curious position in Ligue 1. 


With just three games to go, 
the club could either be playing in the Europa Conference League 
next season, or Ligue 2.


Relegation and European qualification remain highly unlikely,
but it is incredible that at this stage of the season,
both remain possibilities. 


It is their home form, at the Mosson, 
that has saved MHSC this season. 


After a dreadful middle part to the season, 
Michel Der Zakarian's side are showing the kind of form 
that alluded to a solid mid-table finish. 


There have been potholes along the way 
but that is exactly what they are now likely to achieve. 


Montpellier will, however, 
be weakened by the absence of Arnaud Nordin, 
sent off against Nantes in last weekend's 1-1 draw,
as well as Lucas Mincarelli, also sent off late on against Les Canaris. 


Regardless, Toulouse will be confident of a result. 


They are unbeaten in their last five and 
are finishing their season on a high note, 
even putting their name in the conversation for European conversation. 


Prediction: Toulouse 2-0 Montpellier

Lens v Lorient


Lens have seemingly run out of steam at just the wrong time. 


Franck Haise's side made up for their atrocious start
to the season by firming-up their defence. 


That solidity has been lost somewhat in recent weeks and 
they have consequently won just one in their last six in Ligue 1. 


That isn't the level of performance expected 
of a Champions League challenger. 


It is in fact their participation in that prestigious European competition 
that may have cost them in this run-in. 


There has never been the depth in the squad to compete 
on both fronts and they are now paying for it. 


Massadio Haidara's inexplicable error, 
which gifted Marseille the 2-1 win on Sunday, 
is symptomatic of the fatigue that all of the Lens squad 
are displaying to a certain degree. 


Nice are just five points ahead and within reach 
but it feels as though Lens will be looking 
over their shoulder between now and the end of the season. 


They will have to be wary of an increasingly desperate Lorient, 
who with three games remaining are three points off safety. 


After a revival in February, Les Merlus have relapsed and 
have not won since 3rd March. In that time, 


Régis Le Bris' side have picked up just one point in seven matches. 


It feels as though the writing is on the wall; 
the defeat at home to Toulouse feels like a missed chance 
that they will come to regret. 


Prediction: Lens 1-1 Lorient

What mental scars will remain? Le Havre could and 
should have taken all three points against PSG on Saturday. 


3-1 up with 12 minutes remaining, 
Les Ciel et Marine squandered their advantage 
with Gonçalo Ramos netting a 95th-minute equaliser. 


Le Havre did, nonetheless, postpone PSG's title celebrations 
for a little under 24 hours but the result leaves the club 
with regrets and thoughts of what might have been. 


Regardless, Luka Elsner's side have pulled themselves out 
of the relegation zone on goal difference and 
they now have a favourable tie against Strasbourg. 


Les Alsaciens have nothing to play for, 
even if mathematically, there remains an outside chance of relegation.


Patrick Vieira's side are not exactly fodder 
but Le Havre will be the more motivated heading into this tie 
and at this point of the season, where fatigue begins to show, 
that can make the difference. 


Prediction: Le Havre 2-1 Strasbourg

Georges Mikautadze once again got on the scoresheet last weekend 
but unlike in previous weeks, his exploits did not allow Metz 
to get a result. Instead, Lille reversed the scoreline, 
leaving Metz in the relegation play-off spot. 


The Georgian international continues
to have an incredible individual impact on this side 
and Rennes would be wise to be wary. 


Metz are dangerous in transition,
Miktautadze is clinical and it is a dangerous combination. 


Rennes aren't in peak form either and
their season looks to have already unravelled. 


Their chances of securing European football for next season 
are dimming and desperation is showing; 
it at least in part accounts for the nine-goal thriller against Brest. 


Benjamin Bourigeaud said Rennes were "idiots" against Les Brestois. 


The criticism is valid, there now needs to be a response. 


Prediction: Metz 3-2 Rennes
