Sassuolo vs Inter

Sassuolo somehow hold the rather incredible record

of being the only side to beat Inter in league action this season.

They also are the only side to beat them in 90 minutes

in any competition at all in fact as their defeat to Bologna

in the Coppa Italia came after extra time and

they were beaten on penalties by Atletico Madrid

in Champions League action.

Despite achieving such a feat and also managing to beat Juventus

too when they were in front at the beginning of the season,

the Neroverdi’s season has been nothing short of an absolute disaster.

Whilst they once again lost key players in the summer window

such as Davide Frattesi to their upcoming opponents,

you’d have been hard pushed to find many fans

across Italy that would have expected the side to struggle

so badly and end up in a relegation battle.

In fact, you could argue that they aren’t just in a battle,

they’re staring down the barrel at a potential return

to the second tier for the first time in over a decade.

The minnows find themselves running out of time

to save their place in the top league and

will have to hope that Inter are suffering

from something of a celebration hangover

following last weekend’s rather spectacular

open top bus parade celebrating their Scudetto win.

The tour was something of a phenomenon and

a true spectacle and tens of thousands of Nerazzuri fanatics

filled the streets from San Siro to the Piazza Duomo

to celebrate their team achieving their all important second star.

A few thought that their high adrenaline win over rivals Milan

just under a fortnight ago may have seen them drop off and

be a little tired for their game against Torino

but how wrong they were. A simple 2-0 win

in a game they controlled and could’ve scored more in shows

that they are intent on trying to break the 100 point barrier

and try and set a club record points total for the three points

for a win era. Sassuolo will need magic to repeat the trick

they managed early season and boy do they need it.

A loss here is one nail closer to the final one

in their coffin down to Serie B.

Prediction: Sassuolo 1-3 Inter

Roma vs Juventus

Whilst the Scudetto race is done and dusted,

the race for the Champions League places continue

as Daniele De Rossi’s fifth placed Roma play host to the

much maligned Max Allegri’s out of form and lacklustre Juventus.

The Italian media have run out of superlatives to praise the way

that Daniele De Rossi has turned around his beloved club’s fortunes

since his January arrival.

Since stepping into the hotseat

to replace José Mourinho, the former SPAL coach has brought

about a fearless attacking style to his side who now look destined

to finish in the Champions League spots.

At one stage, it looked as though they could be set

for Europa League at best but the way

that De Rossi has re-energised the whole club has allowed him

to bring the best out of the likes of Paulo Dybala and

Lorenzo Pellegrini amongst others.

The same energy simply cannot be found far north

in Turin as the side from the Allianz Stadium have dropped

like a stone since the turn of the year.

Their sliding doors moment was their blunt home draw

with Empoli that saw Arek Milik dismissed and

since then they’ve picked up just two league wins.

The title race back in January was a two horse race

between the Bianconeri and Inter which shows you

just how well the first half of the campaign went for Allegri’s side

but at the time of writing they now find themselves

a whopping twenty four points behind top spot and

just eight points clear of seventh placed Atalanta

who have a game in hand on them as they look to usurp any side

who has a place in the top five.

Roma look as if they’re beginning to tire a little and

the worry there is that perhaps it could give Juve a chance

of taking something from the Olimpico.

Confidence levels could be a factor here.

Roma win and they should be safe in achieving a Champions League spot.

Prediction: Roma 2-1 Juventus

Empoli vs Frosinone

Turning our attention to the bottom of the league

now as we look to assess Empoli’s chances of squashing

a Frosinone fight back and escape the hassle of becoming embroiled

in a relegation battle all the way until the last day of the season.

Davide Nicola’s January arrival to the Empoli hotseat gave the side

from the Castellani a fighting chance.

Under their previous two incumbents,

the side had comfortably the league’s worst attack

and were shipping goals left right and centre.

Whilst their attack is still a little blunt, despite the arrival

of the impressive M’Baye Niang, their defence has become

much more solid and has allowed the side to drag themselves

out of the relegation zone.

Rather concerningly though, the early form of the side

under Nicola has begun to wane and six defeats in eight

has seen Gli Azzurri drop to 17th spot and

just two points above the dreaded relegation places directly below them.

Travelling to them this weekend are fellow strugglers Frosinone

who took advantage of a kind fixture last weekend to leapfrog their

upcoming opponents on goal difference and

jump out of the bottom three and onto 31 points.

Their comfortable win over bottom side Salernitana

not only relegated their opponents but bred some

much needed confidence around the camp

as The Canaries have found life tough this half of the season

and have seen themselves fall from a safe midtable position into

what is quite possibly the most open relegation fight

in modern memory.

Eusebio Di Francesco still continues to be trusted

with the fight for survival which is quite surprising given

that all of the sides around them bar Verona

have changed coach at least once this season.

Can their loyalty in the former Roma coach pay off?

Winning an away trip is something

that they haven’t managed all season.

What a time to do it if they can manage it here.

Prediction: Empoli 2-1 Frosinone

Udinese vs Napoli

Udinese’s brave and bold decision to dispense with Gabriele Cioffi

and replace him with Fabio Cannavaro is yet to pay off.

One point out of six so far for the former Benevento coach

and Ballon D’Or winner has meant that there is yet to be any form

of new manager bounce in Friuli.

The Zebras currently find themselves stuck in the bottom three,

two points adrift of Empoli, Verona and Frosinone and

with arguably the toughest run in,

it’s going to require Cannavaro to find something

from within his side to get them going and

pull themselves out of the mess they currently find themselves in.

One thing they can take comfort in is the way

they’ve so far managed to step up their game

in matches against the top sides.

Wins over Milan, Lazio and Juventus coupled

with brave displays against the likes of Inter and

Roma show that when they’re the underdog,

Udinese can come out fighting and

they’ll need to do just that if they’re to get anything

out of this match with Napoli.

Napoli aren’t enjoying their best season and given the highs

of last year, it’s been quite a comedown for fans of the Neapolitans.

After blowing away the entire division last term,

Europa Conference League looks to be the limit

of their ambitions this year and they’re only really going

to achieve that due to Italy’s coefficient now

allowing five Champions League slots.

Francesco Calzona has done a solid job of turning the tide

following the failed Walter Mazzarri experiment and

will be hoping to finish as high up as possible

to allow his successor to compete in some form

of European football next year.

Udinese need the win but Napoli also find themselves wanting

to finish what has been a very poor season by their standards

on a real high.

Close. A draw could be a good bet here.

Prediction: Udinese 1-1 Napoli

Monza vs Lazio

Monza find themselves with little to play for at this stage

of the season but that is far from a bad thing.

In just their second campaign ever at this level,

Rafaelle Palladino’s well backed team find themselves in 11th spot,

the same place they finished last year.

They’ll need nine points from their remaining four games

to beat last year’s points total but to go

from Serie B play off winners to well established Serie A

is no mean feat and given the fortunes of the likes

of Frosinone and Salernitana and even Empoli,

many teams who go up struggle to really make a mark

on the top flight.

Most sides struggle to bridge the gap and

although they may stay for a couple of years like Salernitana

and Empoli, they fail to truly break into the safety

that mid table offers.

Sure Monza have been backed

but they started last year abysmally under Giovanni Stroppa

but thankfully Palladino came to the rescue and

has brought them to a comfortable mid table home.

Lazio arrive in Brianza to take them on with the sole purpose

of trying to see if they can win as many games as possible

between now and the season’s end in the hope

that it will land them somewhere in the European spaces.

Igor Tudor’s team haven’t been at their brilliant best

all that often this term but they know a win here

would be greatly received and should results go in their favour,

they could climb to within a point of their bitter local rivals Roma

who occupy the last Champions League.

Now with nothing to play for but a last throw of the dice

at getting Champions League football following their elimination

from the Coppa Italia, Tudor’s Lazio should enter this

with the sole intention of gaining three points.

They should be able to topple Monza.

Prediction: Monza 1-2 Lazio

Verona keep on just about keeping their heads above water.

Despite performing admirably at the Olimpico on Saturday night

against Lazio, they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat and as a result,

find themselves separated from the trap door to Serie B

by just two points.

It could have been worse if Udinese had beaten ten man

Bologna instead of drawn but it must be said

that it would be rather harsh to see Baroni’s Verona

in the bottom three as their bravery and

willingness to give youth a chance to develop perhaps merits

an opportunity to fight their way to safety.

With three of their last four games at home,

the Bentegodi needs to get behind their side

if they’re to turn some of their promise and

bravery into something of a points return

that would keep them in the country’s top division.

Fiorentina have a reason to gain points themselves

as their rather impressive start to the season

has somewhat fallen apart since the Christmas break.

Despite having a game in hand over most teams above them,

they sit five points away from the Europa Conference League space

so perhaps their best bet is to try and win

that competition this year whilst they are still in it

if they want to try and make a step up and

play in the Europa League next term.

Verona need the points more

but will need to keep it tight in defence

against a team who when at their best,

can flex their muscles in attack against anyone.

This one is a close one to call.

One Verona can’t afford to lose.

Prediction: Verona 1-1 Fiorentina

Milan vs Genoa

Milan have certainly had a rather sombre fortnight.

After conceding the title to their city rivals Inter in a battle

at San Siro, they’ve then had to see their city centre draped

in black and blue colours as the fans of their bitter enemies

have turned out in their tens of thousands to party and

join the Scudetto parade.

Not only did they lose the match and

title in their home fixture edition of the derby,

they’ve also now been beaten to twenty Serie A titles by Inter,

meaning that they have been beaten in the race

to gain the second star on their badge,

something that they are certain to be teased for for an eternity.

The cost of Genoa gives them the chance to finally

get the proverbial monkey off their back and try and

build some form before the end of the campaign

and ensure they finish runners up.

Their former striker Alberto Gilardino has

however built a very strong side at Genoa and

they’ll be arriving at San Siro with no fear whatsoever.

The reverse fixture saw red cards, Olivier Giroud end up

in goal and a sneaky late win for Milan

but what Genoa will take away from

that game is how well they fought

with the league’s second best team and

how well that reflects on them in what is their first year back

at this level following promotion from the second division.

Milan are a team who are angry and

keen to make amends for their recent humiliation and

given that this fixture could be one of Stefano Pioli’s last

in charge of the club, his loyal players will be keen

to make sure he gets a strong send off.

Genoa will battle again but it’s hard to say them

quite showing enough to topple Milan.

Prediction: Milan 3-1 Genoa

It is official. Salernitana’s three year stint in Serie A is over.

Last weekend’s defeat to fellow strugglers Frosinone

saw a return to Serie B for the Salerno based outfit confirmed

and it isn’t unfair to say that they fully deserve

to have become the first side to fall through the trap door this year.

In what has been one of the most hotly contested relegation scraps

in recent memory, Salernitana have been by far the worst side

in it and have occupied the league’s bottom place

for much of the campaign.

Despite trying four different coaches, none could get the form

out of Boulaye Dia we saw last season and none could settle

on any sort of team that was able to be solid

at the back whilst scoring regular goals.

The league’s worst defence host one

of the league’s most brutal attacks as Atalanta come

to town in the hope that they can destroy their recently

relegated counterparts and push on in their quest

for Champions League football.

Whilst their best chance at reaching the group stage

of next year’s edition may be to win the Europa League,

Gasperini’s side have it well in their minds to try and

finish as high in the league as possible and

not rely on their ability to win in knockout competitions

to reach their goal.

Salernitana have had ample opportunity to escape their fate

and they’ve never taken it. It’s hard to see them putting up

any more of a fight now that they’re officially down.

Atalanta, should they have the right mindset,

could run riot here and notch up a score

that makes their competitors take notice.

Torino found themselves on the receiving end

of a Scudetto party last weekend as they rather unfortunately

became victims of an Inter side trying to put on a show

for their ecstatic fans.

A Hakan Calhanoglu double in the space

of five second half minutes just before the hour mark

saw Ivan Juric’s men blown away and drowned out

by the party atmosphere that reverberated all around San Siro.

This weekend they find themselves back on home soil and

in front of them are the season’s breakout stars Bologna.

The side from the west have had their best Serie A season

in living memory with even the Roberto Baggio season

of the late 90s not even coming close to eclipsing

what the team have managed this year.

With Champions League football all

but secure if they win this match,

Thiago Motta will be given hero status

in the city for the work he has done in maximising the ability

of his players and turning a perennial mid table team

into one that is able to compete at the top end

of Serie A and qualify for Europe’s premier cup competition.

One rather sad fact about this game though is the fact

that it could well be one of the final matches in charge

of both coaches of their respective teams.

Torino look as if they’re going to lose Ivan Juric

who looks set to walk away when his contract expires in June

and heavy media speculation appears to be gaining traction

around the idea that Thiago Motta could well

be Max Allegri’s replacement at Juventus this summer.

Both coaches have done remarkable jobs at their respective teams

and this game should be a celebration of that.

This could mean that it is one that ends in a rather close affair

that sees both teams take a point each in their quest

Cagliari in many respects have pulled off a minor miracle

to even be in with a fighting chance of surviving

at this stage of the season.

Their rather embarrassing early season form that saw them rooted

to the bottom three gave the impression that the jump

from Serie B was going to be too much for them.

It is easy to forget that for much of last year

they actually found themselves treading water in the middle

of the second division as they tried to adapt

after relegation the year before.

An exceptional late run of form saw them sneak into the play offs

and despite facing a barrage of attack in both legs

by a Bari side who finished higher than them in the league,

Claudio Ranieri’s men stole the final promotion slot thanks

to a 94th minute winner from Leonardo Pavoletti away

at the Stadio San Nicola in the second leg.

Since the turn of this calendar year, they’ve discovered the ability

to pick up points more regularly and as a result sit outside

of the bottom three at the time of writing and

it must be said that home form is what is giving them a chance.

With 24 points picked up in Sardinia this term,

it must be said that Lecce won’t exactly be too excited

about making a trip south of the mainland.

With their safety all but secured thanks to the arrival of Luca Gotti,

there’s little pressure on Lecce here.

With the home fans backing them and

their legendary miracle working coach readying his side

for what could well be his last dance,

expect Cagliari to take full advantage of Lecce

not being quite so desperate for points

as they were just a few weeks prior.

Cagliari should have enough here and

should results go their way,

they could move five points clear of the relegation zone

with three games to play.
