Arsenal v Bournemouth 

Twenty years of hurt is so tantalisingly close

to being over for Arsenal.

A first title since 2004 is in touching distance 

though Manchester City’s game in hand means the situation 

is out of Arsenal’s control.

All they can do now is their job and

hope City drop points to let them in. 

That is what will make their remaining games, 

while the title is still up for grabs, so interesting.

The stakes are so high. One more slip from Arsenal and 

will surely be over for good.

Again this week they play first and they have to do 

all they can by putting maximum pressure on City by winning, 

in this case at home to Bournemouth.

Arsenal, who could have summer signing Jurrien Timber available 

after a long-term knee injury, appear to have seen 

off their untimely wobble during which they were knocked 

out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich and 

beaten at home by Aston Villa.

Three league wins on the spin since then suggest 

they have regained their composure.

How they came through the north London derby 

against big rivals Tottenham was another display of mettle and 

their title credentials from Mikel Arteta’s men. 

After establishing a 3-0 half-time lead Arsenal had

- and managed to - cling onto it in the face 

of increasing second-half Spurs pressure. 

Bournemouth - and a lunchtime kick-off, 

which has caught teams napping the past

- will now provide Arsenal with their next test.

Andoni Iraola’s men reached their record

Premier League’s points total - 48

- following their 3-0 victory over Brighton last week. 

As if that is not impressive enough, their form 

since a poor start during which they failed 

to win any of their first nine games, 

is the fifth best in the league.

With 18-goal striker Dominic Solanke in the mix 

for the golden boot and European football still possible, 

10th-placed Bournemouth still have plenty to play 

for making this the far from certain victory Arsenal could do 

with in their title-chasing circumstances.

And then there were three. 

Results from game week 35 saw

Sheffield United’s relegation confirmed and 

left Nottingham Forest as one of the three sides 

still fighting to stay up heading into the final weeks. 

Luton and Burnley are now their competition. 

In some ways Forest could hardly have asked 

for a more favourable run. 

Two of their fixtures are against two of the league’s bottom 

three sides - this one against Sheffield United and 

a mouthwatering-looking meeting with Burnley.

Potentially a winner-takes-all final day decider. 

The one concern, despite those welcoming-looking fixtures 

is their away form.

It was the worst in the league last season with Forest claiming 

just one win from their 19 games.

It has not been that much better this time around 

with two victories from their 17 matches on their travels so far, 

the third worst record in the division.

With Chelsea to come at home, 

Forest now somehow need to buck the trend on their travels 

to give themselves a shot at surviving. 

They have just a one point cushion between themselves and 

the bottom three and a slightly better goal difference 

than Luton and Burnley.

For the Blades their inevitable fate was sealed 

at St James’s Park last week when they were hammered 5-1 by Newcastle. 

They have now conceded 97 goals this season.

One of their targets in the remainder of the season 

will be to somehow avoid going down 

as the worst side defensively in Premier League history.

That unwanted honour belongs to Swindon 

who conceded 100 goals in the 1993/94 season.

In their defence - no pun intended - that was a 42 game season. 

Sheffield United are shipping goals in a 38-match campaign 

and have already set a new record for goals conceded 

in that amount of games.

Their current total of 16 points from 35 games means 

they are already the third worst team in Premier League history. 

The end of the season cannot come quickly enough 

for Chris Wilder and his side. 

Prediction - Nottingham Forest

Manchester City v Wolves 

Heading into this weekend there appears no room

for error in the title race. 

Manchester City go into it knowing only winning all four 

of their remaining games will guarantee a fourth 

successive Premier League title.

But the picture could change by the time they kick off 

against Wolves on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day their nearest rivals Arsenal face Bournemouth. 

Any dropped points from the Gunners and 

what City will have to do to retain their title 

will change and crucially reduce. 

Once they have their noses in front this late in the season City 

do not tend to let situations like this slip.

They start the next round of games one point behind Arsenal 

but with a game in hand.

Their destiny is in their hands but potential obstacles lie in wait. 

Gary O’Neil’s side are one, though his ability 

to influence proceedings will be reduced after he was hit 

with a one-game touchline ban. 

They are sitting comfortably in mid-table

but mathematically can still reach the European places 

so have plenty to play for.

City will need no telling about Wolves threat. 

One of the three Premier League defeats 

they have suffered this season came at Molineux earlier in the season.

And Wolves have two of their main men back 

in Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha. 

The Midlanders are a different side with those two in it, 

understandable given they are the two top scorers. 

Cunha has 13 goals and Hwang 12. It is no coincidence 

that Wolves’s seven-game winless run came to an end 

against Luton last week when the attacking 

duo were reunited in O’Neil’s starting XI

for the first time since December. 

City are set to be without first-choice goalkeeper Ederson 

after he picked up a shoulder injury against Nottingham Forest 

and left the City Ground in a sling. 

In-form Phil Foden and defender Ruben Dias were absent 

against Forest due to illness. 

Having said all that, this is City with their embarrassment of riches 

and this is the business end of the season. 

And it would be a major surprise 

if they did not find the route to victory again.

Prediction - Manchester City win

Just when they were looking like they would certainly stay up, 

the injuries began to really build up and 

the result has been one win in their last 15 games.

The absence of striker Elijah Adebayo has been especially unfortunate. 

He was one of the league’s most in-form forwards 

with seven goals in 10 games before being struck down 

by a hamstring injury in February. 

His return off the bench last week at Wolves could hardly 

have been better timed. 

For Everton, they can relax a little

after confirming their survival last week. 

That could also be good news for Luton 

who most definitely still need points. 

Prediction - Luton win

Both sides have avoided any late-season drama 

by securing another season in the Premier League 

so can play out the campaign stress free. 

We are now entering the part of the season 

where final appearances are being made 

so this could be Ivan Toney’s penultimate home game 

for Brentford while Tosin Adarabioyo is into his final weeks 

as a Fulham player ahead of his free transfer departure.

He will be hoping he gets to spend some of that time 

on the pitch after being left out of the 1-1 draw 

with Crystal Palace last week. 

Prediction - draw

Newcastle sent Sheffield United down last week

At different times they have looked nailed on to go down 

but with three to play they are still hanging in there.

The latest result which kept their hopes alive came 

at Manchester United, where they stayed in the game 

before a late equaliser earned them a point thanks 

to Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty. 

Losing just one game in seven is a display of form 

and resilience when it is has been most needed

at this late stage in the season. 

If there is one disappointment for Vincent Kompany it is 

that not enough of those games have been wins.

The aim now is to ensure there is something riding 

on their final day clash with Nottingham Forest. 

For that they will need results against Newcastle and Tottenham first.

Brighton v Aston Villa

The way this season is panning out for both sides 

of late there should only be one winner here.

Aston Villa have a Champions League place to try 

and seal and a four-game unbeaten run to extend.

There were some signs of frailties in how 

they squandered a 2-0 lead against Chelsea

in the second half to draw 2-2.

And goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and 

midfielder Youri Tielemans could be key injury absentees too 

after being forced off against Chelsea. 

But Brighton and Roberto de Zerbi have had a really poor period 

which continued with the 3-0 surrender at Bournemouth. 

They would be welcome opponents for most sides right now.

Brighton, who have lost left-back Pervis Estupinan 

until next season following ankle surgery, 

can still qualify for Europe. 

Not that you would know they were still chasing 

such a worthwhile goal based on their form

- just three league wins in 15 games in 2024

- form that would have them just outside the relegation zone 

since the turn of the year.

Prediction - Aston Villa win

Both of these sides have had underwhelming seasons 

but can still salvage European football from it. 

With sixth definitely and seventh possibly earning a place 

in Europe next season there is still plenty 

for these two London rivals to play for.

Securing a place in one of the continental competitions 

could also boost both managers’ hopes of keeping 

their jobs next season. 

It is the minimum Chelsea’s owners want meaning 

there can be no let up for Pochettino 

whose league form has generally been good 

since mid-February to claw their way back into contention.

They have lost just once in the Premier League since then. 

David Moyes, it seems, looks even closer to the exit door 

with the build-up to West Ham’s trip to Chelsea featuring 

more talk about managers who could replace him 

such as former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui and 

Paulo Fonseca and reports that he has been targeted 

by Spartak Moscow. 

Prediction - Chelsea win

Liverpool v Tottenham

Tottenham looked to have a huge part to play in the destiny 

of the title with games against Arsenal, 

Liverpool and Manchester City all in their run-in.

But Liverpool have already shot themselves 

in the foot before facing Spurs after an untimely dip.

Dropped points in three of the last four games via defeats 

against Crystal Palace and Everton and a draw 

at West Ham have left Liverpool needing a huge turn 

of events to win the league. 

The dream of a farewell title for departing

manager Jurgen Klopp is almost over. 

And all eyes will be on any interactions between him 

and Mohamed Salah after their touchline spat at the London Stadium.

It is similar for Spurs and their hopes of ending 

Ange Postecoglu’s first season with a Champions League place.

Successive defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal dented them 

and left the north Londoners with an uphill task to catch Aston Villa.

It is one they will have to try and complete 

without Timo Werner and Ben Davies 

who have been ruled out injured for the rest of the season. 

Prediction - Liverpool win
