Athletic Club vs Osasuna



With the title race over, a lot of the attention at the top of 
LaLiga turns to the race for 4th place with Athletic Club 
aiming to catch Atletico Madrid who hold a six point advantage.


This is a game they simply have to win and on current form, 
they certainly should.


Osasuna have lost their last four matches and their season is 
heading towards a slightly underwhelming conclusion.


It’ll be a shame if Jagoba Arrasate’s brilliant reign ends with 
a long run of defeats, but this already feels like a club
that is thinking about the summer and plans for next season, 
with no decision yet made on Arrasate’s successor after 
the 46 year old announced his decision to stand down.


On the pitch, things have not been at all good in recent weeks.


Osasuna have struggled at both ends of the pitch with 
their goal threat greatly reduced by the absence of their 
16-goal striker Ante Budimir while their standout central 
defender David Garcia is also injured.


Neither is expected to be ready for this game, 
so we can expect some of the issues seen in recent defeats to 
the likes of Rayo Vallecano and Granada to continue.


Jon Moncayola also serves a ban after his red card in defeat to 
Betis last time out so there are problems for Arrasate, 
but there are also selection issues for Ernesto Valverde.


The Athletic boss is missing two central defenders with 
Yeray Alvarez and Aitor Paredes both suspended after 
both picked up red cards in an extraordinary game at 
Getafe last weekend.


Athletic held on with nine men for an important 2-0 win 
despite facing a huge 34 attempts on goal.


With fellow centre back Dani Vivian nursing an injury over 
the past week, there are potentially some cracks 
that this Osasuna side may be able to exploit, 
although they aren’t threatening enough to suggest 
there’s likely to be more than a goal for them.


Gorka Guruzeta and Oihan Sancet are also significant 
absentees for the hosts, so this may be tighter than
it initially appears, but I’d still expect Athletic to pick up 
all the points with the Williams brothers both playing 
well and very tough to defend against.

Cadiz vs Getafe


This is the most significant game at the bottom end of 
LaLiga this weekend and it’s a game Cadiz really need to win.


They are six points from safety with only four to play, 
but a favourable set of remaining fixtures does give them hope.


Getafe are in mid-table and not playing for anything, 
but they have competed well over their last few games 
which suggests they aren’t quite in holiday mode just yet.


They dominated long periods of their home fixture against 
Athletic last time out and it was a miracle 
that they failed to register a single goal against 
their nine man opponents.


They haven’t been at all clinical since losing top scorer 
Borja Mayoral to injury but there is still quality in the team 
with Luis Milla a really elegant midfield player while 
Mason Greenwood is a player that would be playing in 
a much stronger side were it not for his off-field issues.


With Cadiz needing to push forwards and target three points, 
Greenwood could be a huge threat on the break at points 
in this game and Pepe Bordalas may be quite content to 
play on the counter attack.


Cadiz have been relatively competitive in recent months 
under Mauricio Pellegrino and that was even the case for 
long periods at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend.


They had chances to take the lead but paid the price for
their wastefulness as a clinical Real Madrid ultimately pulled away 
to record a 3-0 win.


They’re also one of the worst affected teams by injuries right 
now in LaLiga which is making things even tougher for
what was already one of the weakest squads.


They have staged some impressive late escapes to clinch 
safety in recent years, but it’s looking very unlikely 
this time around and I can see Getafe getting a result from 
this game to push Cadiz towards the second tier.

Barcelona vs Real Sociedad


Barcelona were beaten 4-2 at Montilivi last weekend, 
a result which means they’ve lost all four games against 
the other teams in the top three this season.


It also brought a mathematical conclusion to the title race with 
Real Madrid winning LaLiga as a result.


I suspect we may see quite a disappointing 
end to the season for Barca now.


Standards already appear to have slipped in their last few games 
with some individual mistakes creeping in and many of 
their players may now be more focused on staying fit 
for the Euros than putting their bodies on the line in
 largely meaningless league games.


That offers an opportunity to Real Sociedad here.


The Basques are one of the few teams in the league 
who still have a lot to fight for.


They look to be in a straight fight with 
Real Betis for 6th and 7th places, the difference between 
Europa and Conference League qualification.


A 2-0 win over Las Palmas last time out kept them on course 
for the higher of those positions, but there are flaws in 
this team that weren’t so apparent last season or even in 
the first half of this campaign.


La Real still have an injury doubt over highly rated midfielder 
Martin Zubimendi, who has been touted as a potential Barcelona target.


He’s a player they could really do with in a fixture like this and 
they’re not currently playing well enough in attacking 
areas to suggest a repeat of their victory in Barcelona last May is likely.


A point may be a more realistic target for the visitors and 
it’s attainable with their hosts looking so vulnerable defensively again.


Joao Cancelo has been caught out too frequently at left back 
while youngster Pau Cubarsi has also started to make a few 
errors in recent weeks after a really bright start to life in the first team.


Ronald Araujo is nowhere near his best level so that’s a problem 
for Xavi and one that Barcelona may need to address this summer, 
despite what are likely to be significant financial restraints again.


In terms of this match, Barcelona’s returning defensive issues 
should help serve up quite an open game and I can see it
ending in a score draw.

Girona clinched Champions League qualification last weekend, 
a phenomenal achievement from Michel and his team 
who have vastly over-performed all pre-season expectations.


With mission accomplished, they may struggle to play with 
the same intensity this weekend and this is a fixture which 
could prove to be a tricky one.


Alaves are in great form with a number of previously fringe 
players getting chances in the team and showing the hunger to
prove their worth ahead of next term.

 
They’ve won their last three league games without conceding 
and will fancy they can keep this free-scoring Girona side 
relatively quiet.


With Kike Garcia as their lone striker, they are capable of 
playing a similar style to the likes of Getafe and Mallorca 
who have been problematic opponents that have claimed 
home wins over Girona since the turn of the year and 
I think we might get a surprise victory for Alaves here.

Mallorca are just one place above the relegation zone 
but they have a six point cushion on Cadiz in 18th and 
this is a very winnable fixture.


Las Palmas are in dreadful form with seven straight defeats and 
only one goal scored in that period.


They look like a team that has lost all belief in terms of 
their attacking play, but Garcia Pimienta doesn’t have many 
exciting options in reserve to mix things up and improve matters.


Mallorca aren’t much more convincing, but they do have 
a bit more in the striker department with Vedat Muriqi, 
Cyle Larin and Abdon Prats all capable of popping up with a goal.


It may only take one to settle this with the Balearic Islanders 
still defending relatively well and I fancy the hosts to edge 
this game and take a big step towards safety, 
but it’s unlikely to be pretty.


Prediction: Mallorca 1-0 Las Palmas

Villarreal and Sevilla have had similar seasons with slow starts 
and early sackings, followed by significant improvements 
under Marcelino and Quique Sanchez Flores respectively.


The Yellow Submarine have been particularly impressive in 
the second half of the campaign, but their late European push 
was dealt a major blow by defeat in Vigo last weekend 
with Santi Comesaña’s 17th minute red card the big turning point
in a game they were leading.


They are favourites this weekend but Sevilla are in good form 
and put in perhaps their most complete performance 
of the season to see off Granada 3-0 last Sunday.


Defensively, we’ve seen them go away to the likes of Real Madrid, 
Atletico Madrid and Real Betis in 2024 and only concede 
once and I can see their back three and physical central 
midfielders making it tough for Villarreal’s more creative 
players in this game with a draw perhaps the likely outcome.

Granada vs Real Madrid


Real Madrid staged yet another dramatic late turnaround 
in the Champions League in midweek with Joselu scoring 
twice to see off Bayern Munich, only days after Los Blancos had 
clinched LaLiga.


It has been a fine season for Madrid and even when they rotate heavily, 
as was the case against Cadiz last weekend, 
they still get the job done.


Fringe players like Joselu have frequently come up big and I 
can’t see them slipping up here.


Granada’s mini revival came to a halt with a heavy defeat at 
Sevilla last time out and they’re likely to be relegated 
this weekend whatever the result in this game.


They have shown enough in recent home games to suggest 
they can at least be competitive, 
but Real Madrid’s strength in depth is unparalleled and 
while rotation is expected again, Ancelotti will be able to 
turn to a very strong subs bench in the Second Half 
if needed which should help clinch another victory for his team.


Prediction: Granada 1-2 Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo


Despite a poor European exit and some inexplicably bad 
away performances, Atletico Madrid have done well to 
regroup and regain the initiative in the race for 4th place with 
four wins from their last five in LaLiga.


They can welcome back Antoine Griezman this weekend and I 
can see there being plenty of goals in this game.


Celta have been more adventurous and willing to take risks under 
new boss Claudio Giraldez and they have enough firepower to 
pose problems for an Atleti defence that has rarely 
convinced this season.


They took a big step towards safety by beating Villarreal 
last weekend and they’ll most likely see this game as a free hit.


With their main strength lying up front with Iago Aspas and 
Jorgen Strand Larsen, I can see them being more adventurous 
than most visitors to the Civitas Metropolitano.


Atleti have such a formidable home record though and I 
still fancy Diego Simeone’s team to claim the win.


Prediction: Atletico Madrid 3-2 Celta Vigo

Valencia vs Rayo Vallecano


Both Valencia and Rayo Vallecano suffered really disappointing 
1-0 home defeats last weekend.


Rayo are still in some degree of danger after losing to bottom 
club Almeria but still boast an eight point advantage on 
the relegation zone so it’s entirely possible 
that they already have enough points to stay up.


This is likely to be another tight game between two sides 
who are reasonably strong in their build up play, 
but find it hard to finish chances and score goals.


Valencia have the worst goalscoring record in the top half, 
but their overall home record has been good and with the 
likes of Hugo Duro and Andre Almeida, 
they are the team most likely to force a breakthrough here and 
it may end in a narrow home win.

발렌시아 vs 라요
