Nice v Le Havre



It will be a special game for Le Havre manager Luka Elsner 
in more ways than one.


Elsner's father, Marko played for OGC Nice, whilst he himself, 
having grown up in the Mediterranean city, 
also began his own playing career with Les Aiglons.


The Franco-Slovenian manager is therefore well regarded by 
the Nice fans, whilst he himself naturally has a level of 
affection for the club.

 
He will have to put that aside temporarily.


Le Havre, after a crucial 3-1 victory over Strasbourg, 
have given themselves a strong chance of ensuring 
their safety in Ligue 1.


The win against a tired and lethargic RCSA side puts them 
three points ahead of Metz, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.


Just a point against Nice could be enough to secure their survival, 
if other results go their way.

 
They come up against a Nice side that have rediscovered form 
at just the right time and that are scoring goals with 
increasing frequency.


Having struggled to find the back of the net consistently 
since the beginning of the campaign, Francesco Farioli's side
 have eight goals in their last three games.


Players that have struggled are coming good, 
notably Khéphren Thuram, 
who is making a late push to be part of France's Euros squad, 
and Mohamed-Ali Cho, who looked bereft of confidence 
when he first arrived in January.


Le Gym's ability to win the ball in dangerous positions and 
either transition vertically or sustain pressure in the final 
third is paying dividends and there is a nicer balance to this side.


Some defensive solidity has been sacrificed but it is a fair trade-off.

There is a lot riding on this Derby de l'Est.


Strasbourg are mathematically safe, despite a lacklustre display 
against Le Havre last weekend.


“I’m furious because we can’t have such a pitiful game in 
terms of attitude, in terms of the mindset and in terms of the 
respect for competition.


I can’t accept that.


Certainly, the players may already be thinking about their holidays.


Perhaps they think we are already safe," said RCSA manager 
VIeira in the wake of the 3-1 defeat.

 
Later in the day, Strasbourg were mathematically assured of playing 
in Ligue 1 next season, however, that was little consolation for Vieira,
who will be looking for a response from his youthful side.


However, with nothing to play for, motivation seems like an 
obvious issue once again.


Motivation will be no issue for Metz, who are still playing for 
their survival in France's top-flight.


Another influential performance from Georges Mikautadze looked to
have allowed Metz to take a big step in their fight for survival 
but a late double from Rennes snatched victory from their grasp and 
left them rooted in the relegation play-off spot and three points 
adrift of Le Havre.
 

To add insult to injury, Mikautadze was sent off in the dying 
moments of that 3-2 defeat to Rennes.


However, reports suggest that the red card will be rescinded, 
allowing him to play against Strasbourg.


It is no exaggeration to state that - for Metz - he could be the 
difference between relegation and survival.


In a local derby, with safety on the line, the stakes could hardly 
be any higher for Metz.

Rennes kept themselves in European contention thanks to 
their last-gasp victory over Metz.

whilst on an individual level, he is having the most prolific 
season of his career, there is cause for concern collectively.


The concerns are diffuse and encompass the defence, the attack, 
and even perhaps the manager.


Arthur Theate is a weak point that is being frequently exploited 
but he is far from the only culprit.


There is a fragility to Rennes' defence and 
this has been the case throughout the season, 
even during the high points.


Despite their attacking arsenal, there was a stark lack of creativity 
against Metz and Stéphan was reliant upon his side's clinicism to 
get the result.

 
Lens are another European chasing side that are not having 
the best season.


Les Sang et Or have looked like they're running out of steam for 
quite some time and that shows in the individual performances 
across the team, however, a 2-0 win over relegation-strugglers 
Lorient provided a big boost in their search for European football.


However, it was a match in which Lens lost Kevin Danso, 
likely until the end of the season.


A mainstay in Franck Haise's back three, his absence against 
Rennes will be a big blow.


Neither side is in their best moment but both remain in 
contention to secure European football.


For Rennes, a defeat could easily prove fatal for their hopes; 
Lens have margin for error but not a big margin.

Brest v Reims 


Brest are another side looking lethargic.


Their performance in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Nantes was 
arguably their worst of the season.


Whilst they weren't exposed by Nantes, nor did they manage to 
create clear-cut chances of their own.


There was an exhaustion, seemingly as mental as it was physical 
and they will need to get over that.


There is still a job that needs doing and a podium place to secure.


For the first time, Eric Roy is seemingly in a position 
where he needs to galvanise his troops.


The job of galvanising Reims now falls to someone else.


Will Still and Reims parted ways last week in a shock move.


Granted, results had tailed off, granted, it looked as though Still was 
destined for bigger and better things from this summer, 
but it was nonetheless a curious decision to part ways with 
just two games remaining.


Members of his backroom staff will take charge on an interim 
basis until the end of the season.


Reims remain decimated by injuries and the purpose and 
reasoning of Still's departure is questionable.


On the face of it, it doesn't seem to be a move that will have 
the desired effect in the remaining two games of the Ligue 1 season.

Clermont Foot are hanging on but perhaps not for long.


Pascal Gastien's side need at least a point, but arguably more, 
against Lyon if they are to have any chance of survival.


They came out to play against Monaco, tried to create chances 
and had some success in doing so, however, 
they were undone by the Principality club's superior quality.


That has been a repeated story for Clermont this season and 
it is likely to be the story against Lyon on Sunday too.

 
Lyon's revival has been spectacular and it continued on Monday night.


Pierre Sage's side were 3-2 down in the 88th minute 
but somehow came away with all three points from Lille.


OL have become the comeback kings, not only for the way 
that they have come back from the brink, 
from seemingly certain relegation, and into European contention 
but also for the way in which they can reverse score lines.


Since Sage took over OL back in November, 
no side in Europe's top five divisions have earned more points 
from losing positions than Lyon.


It is a side brimming with quality, and unlike at the start of the season, 
the individuals are in the right disposition to allow 
that quality to shine through.


Now occupying a European qualification position, Lyon will be 
confident of consolidating that place and consigning 
Clermont to a drop down to Ligue 2.


Prediction: Clermont Foot 0-3 Lyon

Nantes v Lille


Nantes are on the brink of safety.


Antoine Kombouaré's return has had the desired effect.


His side were solid albeit unspectacular against Brest and 
were thoroughly deserving of their point.


Four points clear of 16th-placed Metz with two games remaining, 
Les Canaris may already have the required points to survive 
but they will be desperate to take points off Lille and get the job done.


This will likely be a match in which Nantes show little invention, 
sit back, try to contain and see out another unspectacular draw, 
as they did against Brest.


Lille, on the other hand, will be coming out to play.


Paulo Fonseca's side could not benefit from Brest's dropped points 
and proceeded to lose against Lyon, despite leading going 
into the final seconds.


Les Dogues have not looked the same since crashing out of 
the Europa Conference League at the hands of Aston Villa, 
even despite picking up unconvincing wins 
against Strasbourg and Metz.


President Olivier Létang has previously said that keeping 
the focus of the players (and the manager), 
many of whom are expected to leave at the end of the season, 
on the run-in would be the principal task.


At the crucial moment, are their heads elsewhere? 


Their recent performances would suggest this may be the case, 
at least to an extent.

 
Prediction: Nantes 0-1 Lille

Monaco are almost there.


A 4-1 victory over Clermont puts the Principality club 
on the verge of a return to the Champions League group stages 
for the first time since the 2018/19 season.


It was a chaotic victory over Clermont but at this stage of the season, 
the result is all that matters, whilst there were some encouraging 
individual performances.


Ahead of his expected summer departure, Wissam Ben Yedder has 
made a timely return to form.


Takumi Minamino was the other standout performer, however, 
he misses the encounter against Montpellier through suspension.


Eliesse Ben Seghir returns and could take his place with just 
one point enough for Monaco to confirm their podium place.


Whilst Montpellier have nothing to play for, their home ground 
has been a fortress of sorts and they will be looking to 
continue their strong end to the season.


Prediction: Montpellier 1-1 Monaco

This is one of the few games in which nothing 
on the line this weekend.


PSG have already been crowned champions and their thoughts 
have been elsewhere for quite some time.


Toulouse, following their 2-1 defeat against Montpellier can 
no longer secure European qualification, nor can they be relegated.


It has been a strong season for LeTéFéCé and they can't be blamed 
if there is a considerable drop-off in these final matches.

 
PSG's focus is entirely on their Champions League campaign and 
has been since mid-February.


It is expected that they will once again field a weakened side 
against Toulouse, which will not include Lucas Hernandez, 
who has undergone surgery on an ACL injury and 
will therefore be absent for several months.


Regardless of the side - weakened or not - that Luis Enrique fields, 
a win will be expected ahead of the trophy-lifting ceremony 
at the end of the match.


Prediction: PSG 3-2 Toulouse


PSG vs 툴루즈FC

Like PSG, Marseille were given a break last week as they look to 
qualify for the Europa League final.


With the club in 9th, albeit with a game in hand,
it is thought that their best chance of securing European football 
for next season is through winning the cup competition.


There are positives for OM with players such as Jonathan Clauss 
and Ismaïla Sarr returning from injury, 
whilst it has even been suggested that Bamo Meite 
could too make his return.


With the fitness issues abating, OM will be looking to make a 
late charge, starting against Lorient, who look resigned to relegation.


Régis Le Bris' side showed no fight against Lens and look to 
lack both the quality and the mentality to save themselves.


The ship is going down and Marseille can help sink it further.


Prediction: Marseille 2-0 Lorient
