Atalanta vs Roma

With Serie A now gaining a fifth Champions League spot ahead of

next season due to their ever improving co-efficient,

the battle between Atalanta and Roma has added fuel this weekend.

Daniele De Rossi’s resurgent Roma outfit currently occupy sixth spot,

level with their opponents who have grips on

that last Champions League spot and deservedly so as their form

since their former midfielder took charge can only be bettered by

Inter and Bologna.

Now playing a brand of football that suits the players at his disposal,

De Rossi’s side are finally starting to click and the performances of

the likes of Lorenzo Pellegrini, Paulo Dybala and

now well established number one Mile Svilar have become vital in

establishing a more positive and passionate team on the pitch.

For all Mourinho’s success on the continent in terms of

lifting the Conference League and reaching the Europa League final,

his inability to stoke enough of a fire in his players domestically

meant that they couldn’t get back into any real contention in

terms of reaching the top four places.

Sure they may benefit from that extra Champions League spot

being made available but every credit should go the way of

De Rossi should they see out the job and finish in the spot

they currently occupy.

Atalanta however won’t have any intention of letting Roma stroll to

fifth and despite their involvement in the Europa League latter

stages meaning they have a chance of actually qualifying for

the Champions League another way,

they will be keen to not use that as their last resort.

Gasperini’s team have been imperious in Europe but

that can’t be relied on as a way into the Champions League for

next season and it’s hard to see him or his side settling for

that route any way.

The club keep on fighting and keep on their highly successful

ascent towards the top of the Italian game.

It’s hard to think of the top of the table without them involved

now after the past seven years of success that has seen them

rise from relegation candidates to European regulars.

To see them take part in the Champions League again would be special.

This game will be very close and a lot of fun to watch it must be said.

Passion and excitement in abundance surely.

A close one to call.

A high scoring draw could be a possibility.

Frosinone vs Inter

Frosinone are still within a fighting chance of Serie A survival with

just three matches left to play.

If you were to take away the first five matches of the season,

Frosinone would be sitting in the relegation zone and would be

two points from safety.

Luckily for them, that isn’t the case and

they still fight to live another day.

With Monza and Udinese still to come and now on a run of

six games without defeat, you might be able to make a case for

The Canaries being able to stay in the top flight given

that they are making themselves hard to beat.

However, there is one thing being hard to beat and being able to

fend off the newly crowned champions.

One thing that might give them some slight encouragement is

the fact that somehow second bottom Sassuolo managed to

inflict a first league defeat on Inter since the Neroverdi beat them

back in September.

The loss last time out means that the Nerazzuri cannot become

centurions which will have irked their manager and may be

they may well be something of a scorned team

who will b looking to try and beat their best of the three point

era of 97 points that they managed to obtain in the 2006/07 season.

Whilst it’s expected that Simone Inzaghi will once again rotate his team,

which is understandable given the circumstances, it is very hard to

imagine him wanting to lose another game between now and

the end of the season.

He will ensure he has enough quality in the team’s spine and

attack to make sure they can hold off their inferior opponents.

Could this be the game that Lautaro Martinez finally breaks

his latest goal drought? Now on a run of eight

without hitting the net, the Capocannoniere winner in waiting will

surely want to try and get as close to 30 league goals as

he can before the end of the season.

Can Frosinone get vital points and upset the champs?

Surely they won’t lose twice in a row.

Prediction: Frosinone 1-2 Inter

Napoli vs Bologna

These two teams have had quite opposite campaigns so far.

Napoli have had one to forget and now stand to finish on

a points total that could well be more than 30 less than they managed

in their rather formidable title run under Luciano Spalletti last season.

The current Italy boss had the Partenopei playing some of Europe’s

best and most expansive football as they not only blew away teams

in their own country but managed to batter the likes of

Liverpool in Europe.

This year however has been a far cry from that despite possessing

the majority of the same team.

The loss of Kim Min Jae to Bayern Munich has proved to be

huge and neither Rudi Garcia, Walter Mazzarri or

Francesco Calzona have managed to replace the outgoing Spalletti and

get any sort of tune out of a team that now holds the record for

the worst ever title defence in the three point for a

win era of Italy’s top division.

Europa Conference League football could well be the best

that Napoli can hope for, which is frightening given their excellent

spells in the Champions League over the past decade.

Whilst Napoli fans are angered by their fall from grace,

Bologna fans could not be more ecstatic.

Back in August they’d have been quite happy to finish near

the aforementioned Europa Conference League places

but they’ve managed to go substantially better.

Fans thought that ninth place last season was good

but they now sit in fourth place, four points clear of both fifth and

sixth place and look set to play

in the Champions League for the first time ever.

Thiago Motta has done a truly remarkable job at the club and

such impressive tactical development of his team has seen him

linked with top jobs at the likes of Milan and Juventus.

It would be a huge shame to see him leave before he gets a

chance to lead them in Europe and it would also be a

real disappointment to see some of their stars leave too.

Whilst Napoli have had a really poor campaign,

it is hard to see them throw away the opportunity to try and

beat a Bologna team who they may well view as a pretender to

their rightful spot.

This game could see both teams giving it

a real go and a real tactical battle.

It will be hard to separate them.

Prediction: Napoli 1-1 Bologna

Lecce vs Udinese

Monday night’s tea time affair sees Lecce host Udinese in

a battle of two of the league’s strugglers.

Since the arrival of Luca Gotti at Lecce, the red and yellow striped

side have pulled away from the dreaded bottom three and

could mathematically make themselves safe with a win in this one.

At the time of writing, seven points separate the side that play

at the Via Del Mare from their visitors who occupy the 18th spot.

Despite a strong start to the campaign, previous coach

Roberto D’Aversa couldn’t get the side to put in any sort of

consistent performances and manage to pull

themselves away from trouble.

Perhaps his decision to punch Verona striker Thomas Henry wa

actually him doing his side a favour as his subsequent dismissal

has led to Lecce winning three, drawing three and losing only

once since his departure.

Udinese can only dream of such a new manager bounce and

it is something that they have clearly gambled on by firing

Gabriele Cioffi so late in the day and gambling on a Roma like

resurgence by appointing a 2006 World Cup winner in Fabio Cannavaro.

Similar to De Rossi, Cannavaro takes on the role having failed in

Serie B last term as his spell with Benevento ended similarly to

De Rossi’s ill fated spell in charge of SPAL.

Winless since his recent arrival, Cannavaro will be hoping to get

his first maximum here but a trip on the road to a team

who know that just one more win guarantees them a place in

the top flight for next term, it’s hard to see them managing it.

A draw might be their best possible result here.

Prediction: Lecce 1-1 Udinese

Milan vs Cagliari

Milan look as if they are now officially treading water.

Following their absolute humiliation against Inter just over a

fortnight ago, the Rossonieri have drawn back to back games.

A dour draw with the equally incensed Juventus was then

followed up with a much more high octane affair against

Genoa in which they came back from behind twice to then

concede late through a Malick Thiaw own goal and draw 3-3.

Speculation continues to grow around the future of

Stefano Pioli who looks as if he could be about to depart

the club in the summer.

Despite heavy criticism when he was first given the job,

the former Sassuolo and Fiorentina coach has largely done

a fantastic job in charge of the club.

A Scudetto title and a run to the Champions League semi finals are

the standout achievements but perhaps his overall success

can be defined by detailing just how well he has done to

turn a team pushing the Europa League places to one

that now qualifies for the Champions League every year and

is all set to finish a comfortable second behind a team

who have simply been in a league of their own this year.

Travelling to face them are a Cagliari team who can’t quite

escape relegation fears.

A disappointing draw at home to Lecce last weekend was

a missed opportunity and now that they don’t have

Gianluca Gaetano to call on due to his impending suspension,

their second trip to

San Siro in less than a month now looks trickier.

Can Cagliari channel the spirit they showed against Inter to

draw on their last visit to this historic ground and upset a team

in passive mode? This could be an upset.

Prediction: Milan 1-1 Cagliari

Lazio vs Empoli

For all the good work that was done by Maurizio Sarri over

the past two seasons, hindsight is perhaps beginning to

tell us that it was the right thing that he moved on and away from

his role as Lazio manager.

The much loved yet much maligned Tuscan led the Biancocelesti to

second position in Serie A last term but following a

summer of transition, he was unable to quite produce anything

near close to those dizzy heights.

Despite a rather disappointing draw against Monza last week,

his replacement Igor Tudor has taken on Sarri’s vacant role and

begun to make it his own.

Four league wins out of six has seen the team rise to within

four points of the Champions League places and now looking odds

on for at least some form of European football next season,

something that looked a distant possibility just over two months ago.

A win at home to an Empoli side who are desperate for points

could well ensure that they almost mathematically secure

themselves a place in the Europa League for next year.

As mentioned though, it is hard to imagine Empoli being in

any form of charitable mood.

The unpredictable and simply too inconsistent fellow former side of

Sarri are certainly not in any way shape or form safe from the drop.

Davide Nicola has done far better than his two predecessors but

his inability to pull his team far enough clear from trouble means

that they are only one or two bad results away from

being back in the bottom three.

Hard to see them winning here even if they will for sure put up a fight.

Prediction: Lazio 2-0 Empoli

최소한 내년에 어떤 형태의 유럽 축구를 보게 될 것으로 보입니다.

이는 딱 두 달 전까지는 멀리 보이지 않았던 가능성입니다.

점수를 절실히 필요로 하는 엠폴리팀을 상대로 하는 홈에서의 승리는

그들이 거의 수학적으로 내년에 유로파 리그에 참가하게끔

Fans of both sets of teams probably won’t be massively excited

about the prospect of this game.

Salernitana are simply ticking off the days until they can regroup

and go again after what has been a simply horrible campaign.

Comfortably the league’s worst team this year are already

consigned to Serie B for next year and given the alarming

fate of the likes of Crotone, SPAL and Benevento of recent years

and even Spezia who aren’t fully safe yet this year,

teams who fall out of the top flight after hitting a rut sometimes

fall all the way through and into the regionalised third division.

None of the four men who have tried to coach the team

this year have been successful and given the fact that

they have used more players than any other team in

Serie A this season, it’s not been hard to see

why they haven’t been consistent in any other way than bad.

Juventus essentially finished their season in February following

the almighty collapse of their title bid.

After entering an alarmingly poor run that has seen

them win just two league games since the end of January,

Max Allegri’s team have simply been treading water and

just about clinging on to their place in the Champions League places.

Many around the club have been keen to point out

that their aim all along was to return to the top four

but the disappointment of their collapse has led to discontent

amongst the fan base and the expectation is

that Allegri may be on his way in summer.

For as bad as they’ve been it’s hard to imagine

‘The Old Lady’ dropping points here.

Prediction: Salernitana 0-2 Juventus

Nobody has given Hellas Verona much of a chance all season.

Marco Baroni’s team have been struggling for the rest of it

they might actually drop this year into the second division.

However, the former Lecce manager has managed to rally

the team and has started to get a tune out of some of

their sensibly assembled youngsters.

Supported by the vastly experienced Darko Lazovic,

one of the final survivors of the hugely successful Ivan Juric and

Igor Tudor era teams, the likes of Tijjani Noslin and

Tomas Suslov look to be part of a new generation of players

that can be sold on to bigger and better things

if they are able to produce the types of performances

they have been doing of late.

A vital win last time out over Fiorentina moved the Bentegodi

based outfit into 14th place, four clear of the drop zone

with three to play.

With the teams between them and trouble, you’d like to think

that just one more win can do them.

With ex manager Juric bringing his middling Torino side to

Verona on Sunday afternoon, it promises to be a feisty reunion.

Juric is loved in these parts but after moving on to

what he perceived to be a better job, relations at his new club have

taken a bit of a strain.

With the Croatian’s contract expiring in the summer,

it looks as if Juric may well be moving on to pastures new.

Genoa are now safe from relegation after it was mathematically

confirmed last week thanks to their point in Milan.

Alberto Gilardino’s team have enjoyed their return to Serie A

this campaign and in all honesty they’ve never really

looked in any danger of dropping down the table and becoming

embroiled in what looks to be an almighty battle for the ages.

Powered by emerging stars like Albert Gudmundsson and

Mateo Retegui, a positive and front footed style of play

encouraged by their coach has seen the team earn many

plaudits as well as lots of admiration from their supporter,

who had almost grown tired of the years of endless manager

swapping and player turnover that accompanied

their last spell in the top flight.

Sassuolo can’t say they’ve had anywhere near the positives of

their upcoming opponents but last week’s shock win over

league champions Inter means they have a fighting chance of

staying up with three to go.

For all their appalling heavy defeats and lack of any real form,

the Neroverdi have somehow earned the almost ridiculous

honour of being the only team to beat Inter this season and

to make things better they’ve done it home and away.

Now just three points from safety, is Davide Ballardini starting to

A win is a must but it looks as if a draw would be more likely

here as Genoa will want to end the season strong and

not many have managed to go there and pick up points at ease.

Fiorentina vs Monza

At one stage it looked like Fiorentina were going to make a

bid for the Champions League slots.

Much like Juventus, La Viola have fallen off a cliff since the turn of

the year and their league form has well and truly gone

out of the window.

Last weekend's loss to Verona is just the latest in a long line of

results that has seen Vincenzo Italiano’s side fall out of

the European places altogether.

Thankfully for them, they still have the Europa Conference League to

fall back on and given that they carry a first leg lead away to

Club Brugge, that may be their best bet of qualifying for the

Europa League as two more wins in

that competition should do just that.

Monza arrive in Florence with little other than pride to play

for but that doesn’t mean that they’ll simply be turning up to

fill the numbers.

Last week’s brave battling draw at home to Lazio showed

that they can get themselves up for games against sides in the top

half and made it abundantly clear that it is their aspiration to

become one of those sides.

Their young highly rated coach Rafaelle Palladino cuts a figure of

calm and sophistication on the touchline and that presence seems to

have resonated with his players who have adjusted to

life together in the top flight with consummate ease.

With much change and investment in the club since the late

Silvio Berlusconi took charge a little under six years ago,

it is huge kudos to Palladino and his team to have been able to

establish themselves in the country’s top league on

their first ever visit to the top table.

Fiorentina need a win if they are to have any chance of reaching

Europe next season without having to rely on winning

the Conference League to do it.

However, this game sticks out just like a number of other games

that La Viola have failed to win when they’ve needed to.

Monza will make this very hard work.
