Girona vs Villarreal

This is perhaps the most eye-catching fixture of matchday 36

with Girona, the story of the season in Spain in many respects,

up against a Villarreal side that has been comfortably one

of the strongest teams in the league in 2024.

There are still things for both teams to aim

for with Girona competing with Barcelona for 2nd place

and a spot in next season’s Supercopa.

Meanwhile Villarreal still have an outside chance

of qualifying for Europe, although that’s looking very unlikely in truth.

It’s certainly a game that has the potential to produce plenty

of goals with both teams stronger going forwards

than they are at the back and both with an incentive

to chase the three points rather than settle for one.

Girona average 2.14 goals per game this season

and 2.71 per home game.

They have just been so dynamic going forwards

with so much creativity in their team from Aleix Garcia

and Ivan Martin in central midfield to their electric full backs

and wingers who have supplied great service

for striker Artem Dovbyk all season.

It’s no wonder the Ukraine international is leading the Pichichi race

with 20 goals, but his nearest rival will also be featuring in this game.

That’s Alexander Sorloth who has 19 for Villarreal

with 13 of those goals coming in 2024.

He typifies the improvement that the Yellow Submarine

have made since the turn of the year under Marcelino.

His form is something of a surprise though given

he hasn’t previously been that prolific in career

while his physical game was not necessarily seen

as a perfect fit for the returning Villarreal coach’s style of play.

Sorloth certainly has the aerial prowess to cause problems

for a Girona defence that is slightly weak in that department.

However there are still obvious flaws in the Villarreal backline too,

particularly at full back right now with the likes of Alberto Moreno,

Alfonso Pedraza and Juan Foyth carrying injuries.

That’s a real problem given how strong Girona are on the flanks

and I can see the home team having too much

in that department and picking up three points,

but there should be a goal or two in this for the visitors too.

Prediction: Girona Win

This is an Andalusian derby between two neighbours

and it’s a massive game for Cadiz who gave themselves a glimmer

of hope of beating the drop by beating Getafe 1-0 at home on Sunday.

It wasn’t massively convincing with a penalty

from Ruben Alcaraz settling a tight encounter

but it means Cadiz are now only five points from safety

and they really will be alive and fighting

if they can win this game too.

That will be easier said than done

against a much improved Sevilla side.

They didn’t defend as well as they have been doing

in their match on Sunday, losing 3-2 at Villarreal

and giving up plenty of chances.

However, that was against one of the strongest attacks

in the league right now and also came

without one of their best defenders given Loic Bade was unavailable.

He should certainly return for this match and

that will help settle things down at the back and

it’s hard to see how a Cadiz side

that has scored just eight away goals all season is going

to cause many problems for Sevilla’s back three.

At the other end of the pitch,

Sevilla are heavily reliant on Youssef En-Nesyri

but the Moroccan international keeps on delivering.

He has scored eight goals in nine games and

is clearly a player who is supremely confident

at the moment and he frequently only needs a glimpse

of goal to get on target.

The sad reality is that with no European football,

Sevilla are going to be even more restricted

in the transfer market this summer and

may be forced to sell En-Nesyri

but his market value is currently rising with each passing week.

He’s sure to prove a handful for a Cadiz defence

that continues to be hampered by injuries and

with Lucas Ocampos and Dodi Lukebakio operating just off him,

Sevilla ought to carry sufficient attacking threat

to chalk up a third straight home win and a fifth win

in seven league games overall.

Prediction: Sevilla Win

There’s also a derby at the Coliseum on Wednesday

with Getafe entertaining Atletico Madrid.

The visitors will clinch Champions League qualification

if they win this game and they do appear

to have found a bit of form at just the right time.

Five wins from six league games,

coupled with a poor run of results for Athletic Club,

mean that a top four finish is within touching distance.

Diego Simeone has made some changes

to his system in recent games with a 3-4-2-1 formation

helping deliver some better results.

The poor form of striker Alvaro Morata,

who has scored just once in 18 games for his club,

helped spark the change while Rodrigo De Paul is another

who has found himself out of the starting lineup of late.

However both players came on against Celta on Sunday

and it was De Paul who scored the game’s only goal six minutes from time.

That presents Simeone with some selection dilemmas here,

but these midweek fixtures are often easier for the big clubs

to negotiate given the depth they have with squads built

for European football.

Atleti are likely to bring some fresh legs into the side as a result,

but with eight away defeats in La Liga this term,

that alone is far from enough to guarantee themselves the win.

Getafe are a compact side that rarely gives much away at home

and they were very unfortunate to lose their last home fixture

against Athletic Club, although they were disappointing

at the weekend against Cadiz.

The challenge now for Pepe Bordalas and a number

of other La Liga coaches will be keeping their players focused

and motivated even though there is very little at stake.

The derby element to this one should make that a bit easier

and it’s likely we’ll see a competitive game develop.

Getafe are likely to set up with five across the middle

and only one striker and it should be a much tighter game

than the 3-3 thriller between these sides

at the Estadio Metropolitano in December

with both coaches now playing a bit more conservatively.

Atletico Madrid are the team more likely to force a breakthrough

but with Antoine Griezmann struggling to impose himself

on the past few games, it may well end in a draw.

These two sides both put in much improved weekend performances

with Osasuna very close to a rare win at San Mames

while Mallorca picked up a crucial three points

in their battle for safety by beating Las Palmas 1-0 at Son Moix.

The Balearic side’s away record is not good with just one victory

on the road all season in La Liga, but they have picked

up seven away draws which is testament to their ability

to defend in numbers and grind out results at times.

They’d almost certainly settle for another point here

and with Osasuna winless in five games and

drifting towards a mid-table finish,

they’ve every chance of getting it.

The hosts still have a doubt over top scorer Ante Budimir

and while there was a morale boosting goal for Raul Garcia in Bilbao,

they still look a bit short in the final third without him

and this one is likely to be tight and pretty even.

Prediction: Draw

while the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior got a rest.

Carlo Ancelotti is expected to name a much stronger eleven

in this game and the return of the stars

after a weekend off could spell trouble for Alaves.

The Basque side have been in terrific form with 10 points

from their last four games, an unexpected run given

how they’d tailed off prior to that and on the surface

how little depth there appeared to be to their squad.

A number of fringe players have excelled in recent games though

and the likes of Luis Rioja and Samu Omorodion

may have something of a point to prove

as they most likely rotate back in here.

Despite their impressive run,

Alaves will be dealing with another level of opponent here

and with Real Madrid currently full of confidence no matter

who plays, a comfortable home win looks likely.

Prediction: Real Madrid 3-0 Alaves

This is a big one for Rayo Vallecano

who are not mathematically safe and

with two tough fixtures to come,

really need to win this.

Granada had been improving but they were blown away

by a second-string Real Madrid side

at the weekend which would have done plenty

to deflate morale once more.

They were relegated on Saturday before they’d even kicked off

against Los Blancos given Mallorca’s victory earlier in the day.

It’s likely that Jose Ramon Sandoval will respond

to that by ringing the changes here and

giving some fringe players a chance,

but in truth there’s little quality he can turn to

that is likely to make a great difference.

Rayo should have much the better of the game,

as they so often do in Vallecas,

but the challenge as always will be putting the ball in the net.

Defensively they are pretty solid

as we saw again in their 0-0 draw at Valencia

at the weekend and I fancy they will find a breakthrough

at some point here, although it’s likely to be tight.

Prediction: Rayo 1-0 Granada

Athletic were briefly favourites to pip Atletico Madrid

in the race for 4th place but a run of just one win

in six league games has put an end to that

and they look almost certain to finish 5th now

which would still be a terrific season.

A combination of injuries and suspensions left them

without four regular starters on Saturday and

the spine of their team looked a lot more fragile

as a result in the 2-2 draw with Osasuna.

They should be able to field a stronger eleven at Balaidos

but this won’t be an easy fixture

against a Celta Vigo side that has taken seven points

from their last three home games.

The Galicians dropped to 17th at the weekend though

with a slightly more conservative approach

than we’d previously seen from Claudio Giraldez ending

in a 1-0 defeat away to Atletico Madrid.

With more favourable fixtures to come,

I can see the Celta boss being relatively cautious here too

with a point most likely a good outcome

from the home team’s perspective.

Prediction: Draw

셀타비고 vs 빌바오

It’s eight defeats in a row for Las Palmas

and they are in absolute freefall.

The only positive is that they now stand a better chance

of hanging onto coach Garcia Pimienta

who was touted as a potential Barcelona boss

at one point this season,

but these are worrying times as they look totally devoid

of a goal threat right now.

Real Betis look very capable of winning this game.

They are playing well with four wins from five and

that’s largely the result of a bit more continuity

with team cohesion growing after a hectic January transfer window.

Guido Rodriguez’s return at the base of midfield

has also been a catalyst for this improved run while Isco,

Pablo Fornals and Ayoze Perez are linking up well and

all scored in the 3-2 win over Almeria on Sunday.

Defensively, there are still a few issues to iron out,

but they are unlikely to be exploited by this misfiring Las Palmas side.

Prediction: Real Betis Win

against the bigger clubs this season and

they have enough going forwards to ask questions

of a Barcelona defence that has looked a lot

more shaky in recent weeks.

Pepe Mel’s side gave a good account of themselves

in the 3-2 defeat to Betis, having seven shots on target,

as many as their opponents.

However they’ve failed to win a single home game this season

and it’d be a big surprise if the first victory came

on matchday 36 against Barcelona.

Xavi has plenty of options should

he wish to rotate the eleven that starts

against Real Sociedad on Monday night

with the likes of Vitor Roque,

Joao Felix and Ferran Torres hungry

for minutes and a chance to impress.

The Catalans will be eager to finish 2nd rather than 3rd

and secure a place in next season’s Supercopa

and I fancy they will get the victory here,

although it’s unlikely to come easily.

Prediction: Almeria 2-3 Barcelona
