Inter vs Lazio

Inter will officially lift the Scudetto on Sunday tea time

as they are handed the trophy on home soil.

Nearly three weeks after officially winning the league thanks

to a win over their bitter cross town rivals Milan,

Simone Inzaghi’s team will finally get to lift the title

in front of their beloved supporters to crown off

what has been a truly outstanding season.

From Matchday 1’s thumping of Monza at San Siro,

Inter have barely looked back to take breath.

Despite rather bizarrely losing both home and

away against relegation battling Sassuolo,

the Nerazzuri have beaten every other side

in the league at least once this term.

The two defeats the Neroverdi are isolated cases and

it’s definitely fair to say that Inter have been comfortably

the best side in the division and

at one point looked all set to become the best in Europe.

Sadly, defeat on penalties against Atletico Madrid put the buffers

on their dream of going a step further

than last season’s beaten finalist title

but the way they’ve wrestled the Scudetto back

into their hands after two seasons away has been impressive enough.

Hoping to inflict a third league defeat on them and

stop them from reaching their best points total in the three points

for a win era are Igor Tudor’s inspired Lazio.

Maurizio Sarri was in charge of Lazio the last time

these two sides met and it was a rather simple trip

to the Olimpico for the new champions

but things have changed since then

as we now see a stronger and more resolute Lazio.

Powered by their new Croatian coach,

the rather transitional Lazio are finishing the season strongly

and you could probably argue that the end of the campaign

is coming at the wrong time for them.

A sole defeat in the Rome derby since the change of coach

has seen the Biancocelesti rise up the table from mid table

to within touching distance of Europa League qualification.

Despite their resurgent form,

it is hard to imagine Inter wanting to crown their title celebrations

with a defeat at home so expect Lazio to fight

but ultimately come up short.

Hopefully for them,

results elsewhere go in their favour and

guarantee them some form of European football

for next season should they fall short at a party infused San Siro.

Prediction: Inter 2-1 Lazio

Bologna vs Juventus

It is official. Bologna will be playing the Champions League

for the first time in their history next season and

a win here at home to a rather drab Juventus could all

but secure them a third place finish in Serie A this season.

In a league that contains the Milan clubs, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio,

Roma and even the likes of Atalanta and Fiorentina too,

consistent mid table Bologna have risen above almost all those

more traditionally established sides and

have achieved the truly remarkable.

On the eve of the campaign,

many fans of Thiago Motta’s side were hoping to build

on last season’s solid campaign

but knew that they had something of a mountain

to climb given the fact that they had just lost

their main striker Marko Arnautovic to Inter and hadn’t replaced him.

The task to replace the goals was tasked

to the so far unfulfilled Joshua Zirkzee,

who had failed to show any of the promise

that saw Bayern Munch give him game time and

insert a hefty sell on clause when letting him go.

Alongside the likes of Nottingham Forest loanee Remo Freuler

and Scottish midfielder Lewis Ferguson,

Zirkzee has helped power a team to way above its natural habitat

and the praise that the team have received is nothing less

than what they deserve.

An amazing season that could get even better

should they topple one of the league’s most out of form sides.

Since falling out of the title race in late January,

the Bianconeri have entered free fall.

The Old Lady have struggled to beat anyone in league action,

registering just two wins since then with both coming

by just a single goal margin and even more alarmingly,

they somehow managed to fashion a last minute equaliser

to rescue a draw at home to already

relegated Salernitana last time out.

Time is surely running out for their coach Max Allegri

who looks all but ready to say goodbye to his second spell

at the club when the summer comes around.

Could this game be an audition for Motta to show Juventus,

his rumoured prospective employers,

just how much more modern and

embracing he is than their current incumbent.

Is Motta the future and Allegri the past?

This game will tell for sure

as both will want to make sure they finish third.

Prediction: Bologna 2-1 Juventus

Udinese vs Empoli

Relegation dogfight fixtures don’t come much bigger than this one.

Home side Udinese beat an on the beach Lecce at the weekend

to leapfrog Empoli and escape the relegation zone and

also give their new coach Fabio Cannavaro his first win

since taking over.

Now with survival in their own hands,

the Friulians are back on home soil and

know that a win over their opponents

could potentially move them four points clear

of the relegation zone and all but guarantee

them safety given the fixtures that play out on the final day.

Their opponents Empoli will be scratching their heads as to

how they’ve managed to fall back into the trouble

that they currently find themselves in.

A poor start to the season saw them dispense

with both Paolo Zanetti and Aurelio Andreazzoli

as neither could give them any sort of confidence

or find a way to score goals.

Following the arrival of serial relegation fighter Davide Nicola,

it appeared that their worries of dropping down

to the second tier were all but over.

A run of excellent results immediately followed his arrival and

Gli Azzurri looked as if they were all set to pull clear

of any worries and join the likes of Genoa and

Monza in mid-table. How wrong they were.

A run of two wins in ten has now seen them

nosedive back down towards the dreaded drop and

thanks to last weekend’s loss to a Lazio team pushing for Europe,

they now find themselves sat in the final relegation place.

A loss away here to Udinese could see them in real trouble

as the likes of Cagliari, Sassuolo and Verona all have games

that they could well gain maximum points from.

Udinese are favourites given their slightly better recent form

and also the fact they’re the home side.

Can Lorenzo Lucca add to his expanding goal tally

and fire his time to almost safety?

They’re the favourites here in this one for sure.

Prediction: Udinese 1-0 Empoli

Salernitana vs Verona

Salernitana produced arguably the shock of the weekend last time

out as they were mere minutes away from beating Juventus

on their own patch.

If it wasn’t for the late goal from French midfielder Adrien Rabiot,

the Granata would have scored a historic win

in what has been their worst year in recent memory.

Already relegated, the side hailing from the Arechi have had little

to shout about this term but perhaps their brave showing away

at one of the league’s top sides could give them a little motivation

to try and finish strongly in front of their long suffering supporters

who will undoubtedly be a huge miss to Serie A next season

given the colourful and vocal support

that they show their team has been nothing short

of outstanding this year.

They won’t find a tougher game this weekend though

as despite their opponents lowly league position,

they won’t find the visiting Verona in much of a charitable mood

as they know that they need a win

to avoid the joining Salernitana in Serie B next year.

Marco Baroni has endured a rather tough return

to the club he represented as a player as he’s had to battle

at the wrong end of the table all year as well as dealing

with the sales of the likes of Cyril Ngonge,

Davide Faraoni and Josh Doig.

In recent weeks, the team have rallied together well and

have given themselves a real chance of survival

but they will be really disappointed at the loss at home

to Torino in a game they led and with a win could’ve all

but guaranteed their safety.

With Inter up next,

Verona will be targeting a win here to ensure

they don’t have to worry about their future going into the last day.

Can Verona stop Salernitana giving their fans a thank you

for your support kind of performance?

They need it more but it’ll be close.

Prediction: Salernitana 0-1 Verona

Sassuolo are almost certainly in need of a minor miracle

if they are to survive the drop and keep alive their more

than decade long run in Italy’s top flight.

to have any consistent effect on the team and

a run of just one win from their last eight games,

albeit against Inter, it looks as if it’s going to take everything

that the former Palermo coach has got

if he’s to have any chance of escaping relegation.

In this eight games, they’ve dropped vital points in games

against Lecce, Salernitana, Udinese and Genoa

in games you’d expect them to target for points

which has left them in the rather horrendous situation

they now find themselves in.

Even a win over Cagliari will only put them back

within touching distance of an escape and

will mean that they’d still have to win their last game

to stand any chance of survival.

Despite having a smaller budget,

Cagliari have fared better than their upcoming opponents

and despite onto sneaking into Serie A via the play offs last term

and spending much of the early season rooted in the drop zone,

they’ve found a resolve and know that a win here on the road

will all but save them from dropping immediately back down

to the second tier.

One feels that Sassuolo have had their chance and

since they’ve failed to turn around their abysmal performances

all year, it’s hard to see them starting now even

if the stakes are high.

Prediction: Sassuolo 1-1 Cagliari

Friday night’s Serie A game sees eight take on ninth

as Fiorentina look to push Napoli away from them and

secure a third straight season in the Europa Conference League

should they fail to lift it this year.

La Viola have enjoyed a rather mixed season this campaign

and will be keen to finish it strongly with rumours

that this could be their coach Vincenzo Italiano’s final season

in charge at the club.

The side from Florence have reached back

to back Europa Conference League finals

but their startling inability to put together consistent performances

is massively holding them back and has seen them drop away

from Champions League hopefuls to settling for eight spot.

Napoli are currently dreaming of eight place

as their record breakingly poor attempt

to defend their Scudetto crown looks to finally be coming to a close.

The side that won the Scudetto last term has been a mere shadow

of itself and its rather frightening lack of quality has meant

that they have incurred the wrath of their passionate and loyal supporters.

Following last weekend’s home humbling by upstart Bologna,

the Partenopei were given a chorus of boos and

jeers by their home supporters who are far from pleased

with their rather pathetic home performances throughout this season.

This game sees both teams try and rescue something

from what has been a rather underwhelming campaign,

perhaps more for Napoli than the hosts.

It’ll be close and there could be drama under the lights

if it becomes a close battle.

Prediction: Fiorentina 2-2 Napoli

Torino vs Milan

Torino are now officially set to change coach in the summer

after it was revealed by their current manager Ivan Juric

that he will be leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

After three years of solid improvement and

progress since the Croat left Verona for Turin,

it seems as if an agreement has been made for both parties

to go their separate ways and walk away.

It is a shame to see as you’d be hard pushed to find anyone

who supports La Granata who is happy with the news,

even if Juric’s team can be a little lacking in pragmatism.

Before his arrival, the team were rather frighteningly

becoming regulars at the wrong end of the table and

were relying on goals from Andrea Belotti to keep them up.

Following the Juric effect,

they now seem far more confident as a unit and

are hard to beat which means they’ve become a comfortable

upper mid table side.

Europe may be off the cards which is allegedly the key factor

in the aforementioned parting of ways between club and

coach but the team will want to send their popular manager

on his way with as many points as possible from the last two games.

Their opponents Milan find themselves in a similar spot

as they too look to be swapping coach in the summer as like Juric,

Stefano Pioli looks as if he may have taken his side as far

as he possibly can.

Following Scudetto success in 21/22 and

a good run in the Champions League last year,

the former Bologna manager has been unable

to raise his side to the same standards despite investment in his squad.

Both coaches will want to go out on a high and

are popular with their players.

Two of the league’s smallest teams go head to head in a match

that has two completely different meanings for the sides that are involved.

Monza find themselves simply coasting towards the summer break

as they sit in 12th and cannot mathematically finish any lower

than their current position and it would take something special

and other results to go against them to finish any higher than 11th.

Back in August I’m sure that you’ll have been hard pushed

to find any Monza fan who’d have been unhappy

at the prospect of finishing mid table and

it has been said all along that the goal

of their late owner Silvio Berlusconi was to establish the club

in the top flight before building upwards and

trying to make them a club that has an outside chance of Europe.

If they can keep their current side together and

perhaps look to get in quality loans similar to the likes

of Daniel Maldini and Lorenzo Colombo that they’ve had

from neighbours Milan this year,

they may well go one better next term and push the top eight.

Frosinone have much bigger worries and

whilst a loss for Monza wouldn’t mean much,

a loss for The Canaries could be truly disastrous.

Currently clinging onto survival via occupation of the 17th spot,

Eusebio Di Francesco’s team are hanging on to their place

in the top flight by the skin of their teeth as just head

to head keeps them above Empoli in the final relegation place.

Whilst their home form has been solid,

their away form is appalling with no side picking up less points

than them on the road this season.

Can they break their away day hoodoo on their final trip

of the year and beat a team who have nothing to play for?

No one likes these games as sometimes the pressure can be too much.

Lecce are mathematically safe and will play Serie A football next year.

Despite a poor defeat last time out

to their coach Luca Gotti’s former team Udinese,

the side from the Via Del Mare no longer need

to worry about any threat of the drop,

a worry that they’ve had for much of the campaign.

After swapping out the headbutt maestro Roberto D’Aversa

for the aforementioned Gotti, Lecce have stepped up a notch

and pulled away from trouble, something

that they will be hugely glad of considering the fact

that the battle for survival still looks to have many twists

and turns ahead even with just two games to go.

Atalanta will be hoping to catch Lecce on an off day

as they continue with their wrecking ball like run

towards the Champions League places.

As if two cup finals wasn’t enough,

La Dea’s scintillating run of obliterating teams in their pursuit

for success has shown zero signs of letting up and

they now find themselves in a very strong position.

Even if they fail to topple the unbeatable Bayer Leverkusen

in the Europa League final, last weekend's crucial win

at home to Roma means they have a three point buffer

over the Giallorossi with a game in hand,

meaning that a win in this game could mean

they only need a point in their last two league games

to secure qualification to Europe’s premier cup competition.

Whilst Lecce will want to finish strong in front

of their home supporters in what has been a trying yet

ultimately safe season, it is hard to see them being able

to relent the juggernaut that is Atalanta.

Roma vs Genoa

For all the brilliance that Daniele De Rossi has brought

to Roma since his return to the club,

it will be slightly tainted with a slight tinge of disappointment

following last weekend’s defeat to Atalanta.

The loss to La Dea means that they need to rely on favours

from any of Lecce, Torino and Fiorentina if they’re to catch up

and leapfrog Gasperini’s team and

finish in the Champions League places.

Whilst they put on a brave fight against the indomitable force

that is Bayer Leverkusen in the semi final of the Europa League,

they ultimately fell short and now know

that their only way back to the Champions League

is to win all of their remaining games now and

hope for help from others.

Travelling to them this weekend are Genoa

who have had an excellent return to Italy’s top flight

following their automatic promotion from Serie B last term.

A great season has shown some of their young and

exciting players such as Albert Gudmundsson and

Mateo Retegui under the spotlight as well as highlighted

what an excellent job their young coach Alberto Gilardino has done.

Their relegation from the top flight in 2021/2022 had been

on the cards for a few years as a series of unsuccessful managers

and poor recruitment ultimately caught up with them.

It certainly wasn’t an easy task to come in and

revitalise a club struggling but since replacing Alexander Blessin

in December of 2022, Gilardino has brought

back the feel good factor to a historic club.

Asking them to come away to Roma in win though is a tall order

but they will take comfort from the fact

that they’ve won here already earlier in the season

when they managed to escape with all three points

against Roma’s neighbours Lazio in the season’s early weeks.

Roma can’t afford to lose this.

Expect them to be ruthless.

Prediction: Roma 2-0 Genoa
