Finally the last of the three early season international
breaks is over and focus returns to the club game and
the biggest game in Serie A this weekend is without
a doubt the tie between Milan and Juventus.
Two of Italian football’s biggest clubs do battle and
there’s plenty at stake for both teams as
they still continue to navigate through life with
a new coach at the helm.
The hosts Milan are fighting for consistency as
they seem unable to piece together a string of results
that would ultimately lift them into the title picture.
Paulo Fonseca’s team sit seven points off the top four places
and are six behind their upcoming opponents
who are currently the side in the place above them.
For their impressive Derby win over Inter and
then dismantling of Real Madrid in the Champions League
before the break, they’ve then been soundly beaten
by Napoli and Fiorentina and even ended up losing to Parma.
When at their best, they are seemingly a match for
anyone but if Fonseca can’t find that magic formula
that sees his team produce that quality more regularly,
he may start to come under real pressure.
His opposite number Thiago Motta is battling a similar issue
but ultimately finds himself in a better place as
his team sit just two points off the summit.
Injuries have caused his side’s lack of consistency of ate
as long term injuries to Gleison Bremer and
Douglas Luiz have robbed Motta of two of his key starters and
with the likes of Arek Milik and Nico Gonzalez still out,
he’s had to rely on some of the club’s youngsters to help get
some results.
The key thing for Motta has been avoiding defeats
but the team must turn some of those draws into defeats to
force their way into the top two.
If they can win here it would show serious title credentials and
all but consign Milan to a season of trying to play catch up,
something that could well put Fonseca in danger of losing his job.
A scoring draw would be a likely result.

Another eye watering clash in Serie A this weekend is
the battle between Napoli and Roma.
Prior to the break, Napoli negotiated a difficult trip to current
holders Inter by escaping with a rather unlikely point.
The current leaders, eager to topple the side
who took their crown last year,
took an early lead at San Siro thanks to the in form
Scott McTominay but had to battle hard as Inter fought back bravely
and would have completed a turn around had
Hakan Calhanoglu not missed his first penalty in
nineteen attempts in an Inter shirt.
What Napoli coach Antonio Conte will have been most
encouraged by is the way in which his side responded to
being pegged back and how well they defended against
the league’s most brutal attack.
Their response to their setback the week prior against
Atalanta showed neutrals that last season could merely be
a blip and the sides from Naples are well and truly back
as title challengers.
Roma have had a horror show of a season so far,
so much so that they have had to turn to one of their favourite
sons to get them out of a crisis.
74 year old Romanista and ex-coach Claudio Ranieri has been
persuaded to come out of retirement and save
the team’s flailing season as well as conduct some good PR
on behalf of the club’s much maligned owners The Friedkins.
After miraculously saving Cagliari at the end of last year,
Ranieri retired but this week said
that he was happy to reverse that decision if it meant helping
his beloved Roma until the end of the season.
A trip away to the league’s top team isn’t going to be an easy
first assignment but expect the team to show
more fight than it has in recent weeks under Ivan Juric.
Napoli should still just edge it but they’d have definitely wanted to
avoid the new manager curse.

Verona against Inter is the first match of this round of fixtures and
it is safe to say that it isn’t one that the hosts will be ecstatic about.
Out of 66 league meetings between the two teams,
Hellas have won just four of them and haven’t actually beaten
the Nerazzuri since 1992.
They also don’t come into the game in remarkable form either
as they lost seven of their last nine league matches.
One slight positive for them though will be the fact
that they’ve defeated both Napoli and Roma at the Bentegodi
this year so it proves that they can up
their levels for games against the so called bigger teams.
Inter will be kicking themselves knowing
that had Hakan Calhanoglu not spoiled his perfect penalty
record in blue and black they would be coming into
this game back at the top of the league
where they spent the majority of last season.
Despite looking a little tired and frustrated in recent weeks,
they are now unbeaten in their last ten matches and
wins over Arsenal and Venezia prior to the Napoli game
were important results,
especially the former as it leaves them in a strong place in
the Champions League, a tournament
that they are yet to concede a goal in.
If they can get Lautaro Martinez back firing and showing
the kind of quality that saw him score an impressive scissor
kick volley on international duty this past week,
then they could begin to click into gear and look more like
their old selves of last year that bulldozed their way through Serie A.
Whilst Hellas will make it tough for them,
Inter should have enough to win here as the threat of tougher
opponents in coming weeks means they can’t afford to drop points
against inferior opposition.

Whilst the likes of Atalanta and Fiorentina have been taking in
plaudits from all angles due to their excellent starts to the campaign,
Lazio have been quietly going about their business.
Despite them earning little fanfare in comparison,
Marco Baroni’s team find themselves just a point off top and
level with the aforementioned two form sides.
This is even more impressive when you factor in a change of coach
in the summer and a mass clear out
including departures of recent club legends
Luis Alberto and Ciro Immobile.
Nobody expected Lazio to start so well this year
but they’ve done just that and at the time of writing it
is safe to say that they have got their summer recruitment spot on.
The likes of Tijjani Noslin, Boulaye Dia and Nuno Tavares all arrived
on budget friendly deals and have taken the capital by storm.
Facing them this weekend are a Bologna team
who finally appear to be clicking into life under Vincenzo Italiano.
This year was always going to be a difficult one
for the former Spezia coach as last season was a season of huge
overachievement and now with the added
pressure of Champions League football and a host of
new faces in and around the squad to offset
the departure of some key players,
things were always going to take time.
Despite not being able to win in Europe,
they’re unbeaten in the league since a loss to Napoli in August
and draws are turning into wins with
three wins on the bounce lifting the team up to 8th place.
However, Lazio represent a tough task for them and
they’ll do well to keep their unbeaten streak going.
They’ll fight to keep it alive though.

Last season’s Serie B champions Parma are finding life
in the top flight a little tougher than expected.
Having romped to promotion last year,
many expected the team to be comfortably safe in Serie A
but it hasn’t quite panned out like that so far.
Just two wins so far means the team aren’t too
far away from dropping into a battle for survival
that they’d rather avoid and the most recent of those wins
came against Venezia which incidentally ended
a nine game winless run.
The club seem to have faith in their coach Fabio Pecchia,
who has signed a new deal in the last few weeks,
but performances must bring results
if they’re to avoid a season of difficulty.
Games don’t come much tougher than a game against
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta either and
it’s safe to say they’re looking mighty impressive at the moment.
Their statement 3-0 win away prior to the break at Napoli
sent shockwaves around the league and established
the team as genuine title contenders.
For their evolutionary style of play and production of some of the
most exciting players across Europe,
they’re yet to break out from being top four challengers
and really establish themselves as league contenders.
If they can keep their current form up they’ll definitely
be good value though and this game will be
a test as it’s one they may have fallen down on in previous years.
Parma will put up a fight but if they concede first,
they could be in a heap of trouble.

incidentally their only two wins of the season so far,
looked to show signs that Cesc Fabregas’ team had
got the memo on life in the top flight and were starting to settle.
Sadly, that appeared to be a false dawn as the team hasn’t won
since and has then gone on to lose four of their six games.
The team sit just a point above the relegation zone and
with a bang in form Fiorentina team in front of them this week,
they will be nervously looking over their shoulders.
Pundits and fans alike are running out of superlatives to
describe the brilliance of La Viola at the moment.
Nine wins out of their last eleven in all competitions with
just a solitary defeat to APOEL in the Conference League has seen
Rafaelle Palladino’s team click into gear and
force themselves into the title picture in Serie A.
Now sitting just a point off top spot, the early doubts around
their new coach have been completely squashed.
The team that couldn’t turn draws into wins back in
August is long gone and in Moise Kean,
the team boasts one of the most in form players in all of Europe.

It has been a very busy week for Genoa who parted company
with their coach Alberto Gilardino on Wednesday morning.
The decision to replace the coach who took them up
from Serie B and established them in
the top flight last season hasn’t gone down particularly well
with the team’s fan base
who have shown their disappointment and paid tribute to
the job done by the former Italy international.
After replacing Alexander Blessin in 2022,
Gilardino managed to turn around a sinking ship
but after an injury crisis and sales of key players
Albert Gudmundsson and Mateo Retegui in the summer,
he faced a tough task this year.
In his place arrives former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira
who has something of a point to prove following
a surprise dismissal from Crystal Palace
which was then followed by
a very short spell at French side Strasbourg.
For all his accolades as a player, the former Milan,
Juve and Inter midfielder hasn’t managed to really get
his managerial career off the ground yet and
it’s safe to say he hasn’t exactly walked into an ideal situation here.
He also quite famously disposed of maverick striker
Mario Balotelli when the pair last worked together at Nice stating
that he simply couldn’t work with him
so it will be very interesting to see how things work out
there especially when Super Mario has only just arrived in Genoa.
Cagliari will be hoping there’s no new manager bounce
and it’s safe to say that their coach Davide Nicola
knows a thing or two about Genoa having been in
the hotseat there himself.
A draw is a sensible suggestion here.

It suddenly seems quite a long time ago when Torino topped
Serie A in the season’s early stages.
Paolo Vanoli’s side looked a force to be reckoned
with as they were unlucky not to have maximum points
from their first five matches as they were robbed of all three
on the opening day against Milan who needed stoppage
time to rescue a draw against them.
Things now look very different though and a run of six defeats
out of seven has seen La Granata plummet down
the league table and in all honesty the main reason for such
demise is a frighteningly unlucky injury crisis.
The biggest injury has been the loss of captain and
focal point Duvan Zapata
who looks like he may miss the entire campaign after
injuring his cruciate ligament.
In those six defeats, they’ve lost to Fiorentina, Roma, Lazio,
Inter and the derby to Juventus last time out so
they’ve also had tough fixtures.
Perhaps a home tie against second bottom Monza could be
a launch pad for a return to form.
Alessandro Nesta’s team have found Serie A hard going
so far this year and are only not bottom thanks to
Venezia conceding one more goal than them.
Things have slightly picked up in terms of their performances

Even at the time of writing only Juventus and leaders
Napoli have conceded less goals than them.
The issue for the team now is to start scoring more in
the other end as only Lecce and Genoa have scored less than them.
D’Aversa must find a way to combine a resolute defence with
an attack capable of winning tight games
that would see them enjoy a fruitful season away from
their usual struggles for survival.
The Kosta Runjaic experiment looked like it was a great decision
in the season’s early days but a run of five defeats in
seven Serie A matches means that Udinese’s excellent start is
beginning to falter and instead of keeping up
with the pace of the league’s European place challengers,
they’re now starting to revert back towards
their usual spot in lower mid table.
Three straight defeats prior to the international break including
a rather surprising loss to the league’s bottom team
Venezia has raised questions over whether the start of the season
was a similar fluke to the one enjoyed under
Andrea Sottil two years ago.
That such start then nosedived completely and cost Sottil his job.
Could Runjaic be heading the same way?

It feels as if it isn’t too early to call this one a real relegation
six pointer even though we are only a third of the way
into the Serie A season.
Both Lecce and Venezia have struggled to show
any sort of form so far this year and as a result find themselves in
and around the dreaded bottom three.
Lecce have actually acted swiftly in a bid to arrest their decline
as they thought a change of coach might be something
that reinvigorates a rather lackluster team.
Despite his heroics of keeping the team in the top flight last season,
Luca Gotti couldn’t get the team playing at that level again
this year and despite a slight improvement in performances and
results of late, the club decided he isn’t the man to
take them forward and parted company with the former
Udinese and Spezia coach during the break.
In his place arrives the rather interesting figure of
Marco Giampaolo who has been without a manager’s job for two years.
A man who was once trusted with the top job at Milan as recently
as 2019 has been plucked from football wilderness
to save the side from Via Del Mare and in all honesty
the odds are stacked against him as his new team are
the lowest scorers in the league and have a rather
unhealthy looking -16 goal difference.
Their upcoming opponents Venezia are actually faring slightly
worse and in Eusebio Di Francesco they have a manager
who looks like he has completely lost his way.
After three failures at Sampdoria, Cagliari and Verona
he then took Frosinone down last year despite early signs of
a revival and so far he looks doomed in this role.
To think he masterminded Roma’s incredible Champions League
comeback against Barcelona back in 2018.
Anything but a win here could well bring the final nail in
the coffin of his managerial career.
