Athletic Club vs Real Madrid
While Real Madrid have got problems of their own to deal with,
their chances of winning La Liga have dramatically
increased over the past three matchdays,
mostly thanks to setbacks for Barcelona.
Los Blancos have reeled off three straight wins to
nil during that period, but this will be comfortably
their toughest league assignment since October’s Clasico.
Athletic Club are incredibly strong at San Mames.
Since losing to Real Madrid on the opening day of last season,
they’ve been beaten on just one occasion in 32 matches
at home in all competitions.
They can always rely on excellent support in Bilbao and
it will be extra hostile for the visit of Real Madrid,
and Athletic certainly have reason to fancy this.
Their best player, Nico Williams, will be directly up against
Real Madrid’s right-back
which has become the main problem position for Carlo Ancelotti.
With Dani Carvajal sidelined for the remainder of the campaign,
Lucas Vazquez has mostly filled in,
but he’s not a brilliant defender and could be exposed by
the speed and skill of the Spain international.
Fede Valverde could also move to right-back as
an alternative option, but with midfielders Eduardo Camavinga
and Aurélien Tchouameni dealing with injuries,
that would leave Los Blancos light in the middle of the park,
so there are no ideal solutions for Ancelotti.
The visitors are also still missing Vinicius Junior in attack and
while there was an excellent finish from Kylian Mbappe
in the 2-0 win over Getafe on Saturday,
the Frenchman is not at his best right now and may not
get a great deal of opportunities in a tough game like this.
Los Blancos will also need to keep an eye on in-form Oihan Sancet.
The Athletic midfielder is finding lots of pockets of space and
he has chipped in with seven goals in
12 appearances in La Liga this term after
his match winning brace against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday,
following his introduction off the bench.
With Real Madrid lacking a natural holding midfield option right now,
Sancet could certainly manage to get free again
here and potentially continue his rich vein of form in front of goal.
Overall, this has all the makings of a really
difficult night for Real Madrid.
Against the better sides this season in the Champions League and
La Liga they’ve often had problems and I
fancy Athletic to spring a surprise here.

could not save Barca.
They aren’t trying to do anything radically different,
but performance levels have dropped across the pitch and
they’ll most likely be in for another tough game on Tuesday.
Mallorca have won their last two and defensively
they are one of the most difficult teams in
La Liga to break open, particularly in their own stadium
where they’ve only conceded five goals in eight games this term.
They may not have the pace to take advantage of
Barca’s high line as some teams have managed in recent weeks,
but with the likes of Vedat Muriqi and Abdon Prats,
they are strong in the air up top and
that’s one area where they could have the advantage on
the visiting centre-backs.
I expect Mallorca to be really competitive here and
potentially get a draw from the game.
