that has seen them rather surprisingly take over top spot,
Monday night saw Inter snatch the headlines
with a truly phenomenal performance against Lazio.

Perhaps the most impressive factor of the win was
the fact that there were six different scorers from all positions

Whilst question marks still remain over

who again failed to hit the back of the net for a sixth

they responded and it is safe to say
that by hammering a team that have been on

a little more comfortable than in recent weeks after shocking
Claudio Ranieri’s Roma to pick up
their first league win since September.
Cesc Fabregas’ team have certainly found the adjustment to
the top flight more difficult
than they probably imagined but their recent win
should give them some belief.

Nico Paz have certainly been a real positive with
his displays sparking rumours that their upcoming opponents are
actively scouting him after Inter legend
Javier Zanetti was spotted in the stands watching
the game against Roma.
A trip away to Inter who have just hammered Lazio 6-0
will be a very tough one for Fabregas’ team though.
It is very hard to see anything other than an Inter win here,

that has found goals hard to come by for much of the season so far,
rumblings in the Italian media suggested
that it was simply just a matter of time before
Hellas decided to change coach.
However, despite former coach and player Salvatore Bocchetti
tipped to resume control after
ending his first stint in the hotseat in 2022,
the club chose to stick with Zanetti for
the weekend’s match with Parma and
they were proven right in doing so.
The Gialloblu picked up a much needed win and moved
away from the relegation zone.
Only time will tell if this is a false dawn and
no doubt if the team suffer a heavy defeat in this upcoming
fixture then the pressure will be right back on
the shoulders of their coach.
Zanetti’s opposite number for this one knows all about
the pressure of poor form and this result could be
just as influential to his future than that of the Verona coach.
Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca arrived at Milan in
the summer to replace Stefano Pioli with
the remit of re-establishing the team back into title contenders
whilst playing a more attractive style.
Rather frustratingly for Fonseca, things haven’t really
got going and he hasn’t been able to
achieve those lofty expectations.
Despite wins over Inter and Real Madrid,
dropped points in games they should be winning such as
their most recent match at home to Genoa,
meaning that they are well out of the title picture.
Verona being the hosts and coming into
this off the back of a win gives them a real chance
but their biggest issue is their inability to stop shipping goals.
If Milan can strike early and get in front,
they could well enjoy a similar field day to the one enjoyed
by their cross town rivals a few weeks back.
Both managers need a result but only one will get it.
Fonseca must win and in all likelihood,
it is hard to see him not doing even if Verona battle hard.

Alessandro Nesta looks as if he is clinging to his job by his fingertips.
The former Milan defender is struggling to get a tune out of his
Monza side and questions are starting to be asked
about whether he has what it takes to be a top flight coach.
Having spent the majority of his short managerial career
in the second division with Frosinone,
Perugia and more recently Reggiana,
it has been a tough process adapting to life at his new club,
even if the club’s hierarchy are long time friends of his.
Monza have been on a huge upward trajectory since
the consortium headed by the late Silvio Berlusconi bought
the club in 2018 that has seen the team rise
from being third division nobodies to consecutive
mid-table finishes in Serie A.
Heavy investment has allowed the club to blossom into
its true potential and begin to emerge from
the shadow of its much larger Lombardian neighbours
but the threat of relegation could well hinder such growth.
At the time of writing, the team have won
just once this season and sit second bottom.
If Nesta can’t take advantage of a home tie against
a rather inconsistent Juventus side,
he will do well to survive until the team’s next fixture.
They won’t find Juventus in a generous mood though
as they too have a point to prove after a poor
showing against Venezia last time
that saw them have to scratch a last minute goal to save a point.
For all of Thiago Motta’s faith in younger players and
the fact he has had to take over a team in transition,
the fans of the Bianconeri are beginning to get restless.
Their Champions League win over an out of sorts
Manchester City did little to paper over the cracks and
although a top four finish is a more realistic goal
that had been set prior to the season beginning,
that now looks a tall ask given that they are unable to turn
draws into wins.
Monza will be the first team to beat Juventus in
league action this year if they pull this off but in all honesty,
that would be a huge surprise.
It is hard to see there being many goals as both teams
possess mean defences.
Juve probably will just shade this one.

The Atalanta freight train continues to roll on at a considerable
rate of knots as the team look as
if they have absolutely no intention of slowing down.
Another win at the weekend, this time over Cagliari,
made it nine league wins on the bounce and
their systematic dismantling of a sorry looking second division
Cesena in Coppa Italia action showed
that they really are at the top of their game.
The frightening fact is that the excellent shrewd
summer recruitment means
that the team now possesses depth in all areas
which totally supports Gasperini’s high octane and
high energy system.
In previous years, the team’s starting XI could match
those at the top but inevitable injuries saw
the team fall away but now that the side has quality back ups
in every position,
there’s no reason why this start to the season cannot be sustained and
the team can’t become real bonafide league title contenders.
Standing in their way this weekend are Roberto D’Aversa’s Empoli
who are enjoying a relatively stable campaign by their standards.
However, their impressive 4-1 win away at Verona less
than a fortnight ago is their only win in
their last five league matches and despite their rather
resolute defence and burgeoning reputation for
being tough to break down,
it’s is very hard to imagine them taking anything
home with them from Bergamo this coming weekend.
With Ademola Lookman buoyed by his recent award as
African Player of the Year following his breakout season
last campaign that saw him net a treble in the Europa League final win,
expect him to be involved in goals and assists in this game.
Prediction: Atalanta 3-0 Empoli

Times are tough right now if you are a fan of AS Roma.
The end to last season gave fans hope that a brighter
future was on the horizon as the team was led by
a club legend and heavy investment was promised in the summer.
Heavy investment did arrive with the likes of Artem Dovbyk and
Enzo Le Fee arriving at the club
but coach Daniele De Rossi wasn’t allowed the time to build
them into his team as he was dismissed in September.
Fans were very unhappy with the decision and it’s safe to say
that his successor Ivan Juric felt the effects of
that as he walked into an untenable situation.
With players, owners and fans all projecting anger towards one another,
the club descended into a crisis and Juric was out of the door
almost as quickly as he came in.
The club’s under-fire owners have aimed to appease
the fans by bringing in legendary coach Claudio Ranieri
but that has so far yielded limited success.
Just one league win since his return to the hotseat leaves
the Giallorossi in 12th place,
just two points above the relegation zone.
A team predicted to challenge for the top four finds
itself under threat of being dragged into trouble and
if they can’t start winning matches
then the unthinkable could be possible.
A home tie against Parma presents an opportunity to get back on
track and build some form.
Fabio Pecchia’s Parma haven’t enjoyed their return to
Serie A so far and have just one away win to
their name so far this year.
Their poor defeat to Verona last time out was a huge disappointment
and almost rescinded their excellent win over Lazio the week prior.
Roma have too much quality to languish in
the table’s lower reaches and in the experienced Ranieri
they boast a coach who can galvanise a group.
This should be the start of their renaissance.

Lecce have looked far harder to beat and are picking up
vital points in their quest for survival.
A win last time against Monza was vital as it allowed
them to take points off a direct rival and
also lifted them into the safe place of 14th.
In their path this weekend they find a wounded Lazio team
who will be keen to avenge their humiliating defeat
at home to Inter on Monday night.
The club’s heaviest defeat in league action in
over fifty years saw the Biancocelesti come crashing
back down to earth as they were reminded
that despite their excellent start to the season
they’re still a young team developing and are way off
the level of the current champions.
Their coach Marco Baroni, who managed Lecce to
promotion to the top flight just under three years ago,
now has a test on his hands in getting
the team back on the saddle after such a humbling.
He will find his old team in fine fettle and for that reason,
expect both teams to battle to a hard earned draw.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lecce steal a shock win nor
would it be a shock to see Lazio back their coach and
respond with a beating of their own.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli responded well to their disappointing
home defeat to Lazio by overcoming a difficult trip to
Udinese with relative ease.
A 3-1 win in Friuli didn’t manage to lift the Neapolitans
back to the league’s summit
but it does have them finely positioned in second and
with no Coppa Italia or European football distractions in their way,
they look finely poised to make a real title tilt over
the next few weeks as their fixtures look kind on paper.
With Verona and Venezia coming up,
Conte’s team could well enter the second half of the campaign
back on top spot
where they have spent much of the early part of the season.
First though they must navigate a tricky trip to Genoa,
a place that has become something of a graveyard
for the league’s elite in the past couple of years.
Since replacing Alberto Gilardino as manager of Il Grifone,
Patrick Vieira has made the team much harder to beat
and the impending threat of relegation looks to
have ceased for the time being.
Still yet to lose in the hotseat, the French World Cup winner
now must look to turn resilience into a more clinical approach
if he is to start picking up more maximum point hauls.
With Kvicha Kvaratskhelia unexpected to be back for this one,
Conte may wish to use this game as a chance to give
David Neres more time in the team as
his performances since arriving at the club have shown promise.
Napoli will find Genoa resolute here but it would be
typical Conte to manage to escape with a narrow win.
This one is unlikely to be a high scoring affair.

It would appear that Fiorentina are in fact capable of being
stopped in Serie A this year.
Their former coach Vincenzo Italiano came back to
haunt them as he led his Bologna side to a 1-0 win over
La Viola to halt an eight game winning streak.
It’s safe to say that things haven’t been straight forward
at the Artemio Franchi over the last few weeks following
Eduardo Bove’s collapse that resulted in
their game against Inter being abandoned so
it is very admirable that the team have continued to
fight hard in the midst of the stress and
anxiety caused by such a traumatic incident.
It is fantastic to see Bove back amongst his peers as
he has made a recovery
but it still remains to be seen what role if any he can have in this side.
The FIGC does not allow for players to compete in
Serie A with a fitted defibrillator device, similar to
the one Christian Eriksen had installed after Euro 2020,
which could mean Bove must continue his career abroad.
Keen to get back to winning ways in time for a Christmas celebration,
