Lazio vs Atalanta
With each passing week it becomes more and
more difficult to come up with different superlatives
to describe the true brilliance of Atalanta so far this season.
Just as the title race appears to be hotting up with the likes
of Inter and Napoli continuing to pick up results,
La Dea manage to keep hold of top spot with their current run
of form now stretching to eleven straight wins in Serie A.
It isn’t just their results that win them plaudits,
it is the outstanding style of football that the team plays and
the fact that their coach continues to maximise the potential
of not just the starting team but also the plethora
of squad players that all know their duties as they head out
onto the field for periods of matches
so that they can keep the intensity required to keep
within the Atalanta style.
In Italy much respect is given
to the team who are top at Christmas and
they are bestowed with the title of ‘Winter Champions.’
For Atalanta to receive this
when you look at the esteemed competition
that they have around them is monumental
but if they’re to go the whole way and
manage to be end of season champions,
they’re going to have to fight to keep this run going.
A trip to Lazio won’t be a straight forward challenge
as they are one side who are sneaking their way
into title contention themselves.
The only slight encouragement that Atalanta receive ahead
of this trip is the fact that current title holders Inter went and
won 6-0 at the Olimpico against Lazio less than a fortnight ago.
This could work either way,
it could mean that that result has left Lazio tentative and
vulnerable or it could fire them up into
making sure it doesn’t happen again.
Atalanta even away from home should have enough
to win this game in current form.
Whilst Lazio are enjoying a good season so far,
their young and growing team might find
that this game’s intensity might be a little much for them.
Prediction: Lazio 1-3 Atalanta

Juventus vs Fiorentina
It is very hard to make a real assessment
of Juventus’s season under Thiago Motta as of yet.
All manner of opinions have been flying around
and it’s safe to say that no one is quite convinced yet
on whether it has been a good move to bring in Motta
to replace the outgoing Max Allegri.
A host of injuries to key players including
the team’s strongest defender Gleison Bremer,
has seen trust he put in some of the squad's younger players.
We have seen the growth of Kenan Yildiz,
Francesco Savona and Samuel Mbangula
which we may not have had the opportunity to do
so had there not been such an injury crisis.
Even more so,
in years gone by the team had more financial clout and
would have used the likes of Sami Khedira,
Emre Can or even Adrien Rabiot to supplement injuries
to starters so it is refreshing to see the team move
to a more sustainable model of improving
their own younger talents than splashing the cash and
wages on short term signings.
On paper, Juventus are actually yet to lose in Serie A
so far this year but they have drawn an astonishing ten
of their opening seventeen matches which is metaphorical
of how rather strange their season has been in terms
of trying to show development and progress in all areas.
Fiorentina will be arriving at the Allianz for this one
a little wounded after their momentum was halted
by a surprise loss to Udinese last time out.
Two league defeats on the bounce
has blunted the team’s meteoric rise up the table
and it’s safe to say that the team are looking a little tired.
It’s also safe to say that Palladino’s team look a little rocked
after the harrowing incident involving Eduardo Bove
when the midfielder collapsed on the field against Inter.
With the game being abandoned and thoughts rightfully turning
to the player’s recovery, it seems to have stalled the team and
when you also add in their European commitments,
it is asking a lot for the team to keep going at the same speed.
For that reason, Juve might just edge this.
Prediction: Juventus 1-0 Fiorentina

Milan vs Roma
Sunday night’s prime Serie A slot is the battle between Milan
and Roma and it is safe to say that there is plenty
on the line in this one.
Milan boss Paulo Fonseca continues to feel the pressure
as his side slide further and further away from title contention.
In the summer the club decided
that Stefano Pioli had taken the team as far as he possibly could
with the Scudetto winning season of 21/22 looking
like a high water mark.
Progress wasn’t being made towards establishing the team
as regular title winners so change was enacted and
it’s safe to say that that idea may be backfiring a little.
Milan’s self sustainability model is something
that hamstrings the side from being constant contenders
as they prefer to invest in players with potential
rather than ready made players like teams such as Inter.
Asking Fonseca to develop players,
which he has done throughout his managerial career,
is one thing but asking him to do so and
challenge for the league title is a tall order.
His former club arrive at San Siro with little sympathy though
and it is beginning to look a little like Claudio Ranieri
might be turning the ship.
So far the season has been nothing short
of a complete disaster for Roma.
Big expectations were matched by summer spending and
it was the goal to try and get themselves back
into the Champions League.
Instead, they’ve fired two coaches and
turned to their retired former babysitter for help.
Ranieri, now in his third caretaker stint as coach,
is beginning to slightly turn the tide back in Roma’s favour
as their most recent result, a 5-0 win over Parma,
showed that confidence is growing.
This should be a very good watch as it feels
like a pivotal game for both team’s seasons.
Could Claudio reestablish Roma with a win here and
pile the pressure on Fonseca?
It’s a real possibility.
Prediction: Milan 2-2 Roma

It is safe to say that Cagliari really are struggling.
To borrow an English football term,
they are suffering from what is known
as ‘second season syndrome.’
This is when a team’s first season in a division goes well
due to the momentum of their previous promotion
but said momentum runs out in their second year.
With Claudio Ranieri walking away and
taking his magical fairy dust with him,
the rather weak looking Cagliari team are now being exposed
for being the second division players
that they were less than two years ago.
Current boss Davide Nicola is doing his best
but it is safe to say that if he isn’t backed in January
with some new recruits, they could well be in real danger of relegation.
The last thing they will want to be doing this weekend
is facing the merciless Inter.
After winning 6-0 on their last away journey,
to a strong Lazio no less,
it is hard to see them feeling any sympathy
for their struggling counterparts.
With Atalanta spending Christmas Day on top of the league,
the Inter players and their coach Simone Inzaghi will be fired up
by that and will want to regain what they feel
is their rightful place at the top of the league,
a place where they spent nearly all of last season.
They will rotate as Inzaghi often does
but expect them to put out a side that gets the job done here.
Prediction: Cagliari 0-3 Inter

It is safe to say that neither of these two teams have really
got going yet in Serie A this season
but only one of them looks to be panicking about it.
Monza have enjoyed the comforts of midtable in both
of the last two campaigns since their maiden promotion
to the top flight but the departures of coach Rafaelle Palladino
and star attacker Andrea Colpani to Fiorentina
in the summer have rocked the side.
This season they now find themselves at the foot of the league
and their most recent defeat to Juventus,
a game in which they battled hard and only narrowly lost,
was the final straw for the club as they made the decision
to sack Alessandro Nesta.
Nesta, in his first job in Serie A as manager,
simply couldn’t not turn battling performances into points
and that will haunt him as he will now have to watch on
and see if his replacement,
the rather inexperienced Salvatore Bocchetti,take charge.
The former Spartak Moscow defender enjoyed a small stint
with Verona two seasons back but has only worked
behind the scenes since.
He has a mighty task on his hands.
Parma boss Fabio Pecchia’s currently has the backing
of his club’s hierarchy following their Serie B title win last year
but if they have too many more results
like last weekend’s 5-0 hammering by Roma
then he might be on his way out the door like Nesta.
Neither team will want to lose this. A draw looks likely.
Prediction: Parma 1-1 Monza

Napoli vs Venezia
Antonio Conte’s Napoli are continuing their ascent
towards Scudetto glory by grinding out results.
Last weekend’s rather dull affair against Genoa saw the team
pick up another maximum point haul to keep them
within touching distance of the current leaders Atalanta.
Critics such as CBS’s Mike Grella believe
that the team simply cannot sustain a title push
by sneaking their way through games
with one goal margin victories
but Conte has history for doing such things
with both Juventus and Inter and
with no European football in the way to distract them
or tire them out, they have an advantage
over other teams around them.
On paper, they should comfortably win this upcoming match
with Venezia but it’ll be a tougher assignment than it
may have been a few weeks ago as Eusebio Di Francesco
finally appears to be getting a tune out of his struggling side.
Things were always going to be difficult this year
for The Islanders as they arrived back in Serie A
via the Serie B play offs.
With manager Paolo Vanoli walking out to go to Torino
in the summer and last season’s top scorer Joel Pohjanpalo
beginning the season on the treatment table,
Di Francesco had a job picking the team up and
getting them going again.
Some managers may have been sacked
for the form the team started the season
with but he seems to be turning things around slowly.
However, this will potentially be his biggest test yet and
it’d be unfair to expect much from the team here.
They’ll fight but Napoli will probably just do enough to win it.
Prediction: Napoli 2-0 Venezia

During his playing career,
Vincenzo Italiano was a hero to fans of Verona.
Potentially the most enjoyable stints of his career was spent
at the Bentegodi as he made over 250 appearances
for the club over two spells.
It is safe to say he will get a good reception off both sets
of fans as his stock appears to be gaining traction
with that of his current club Bologna.
After replacing the outgoing Thiago Motta in the summer,
Italiano had a real job on his hands to try and
replicate the success of his predecessor whilst also trying
to prove to his own former side Fiorentina
that he could be successful elsewhere.
After a mini squad overhaul,
it now appears that the team are really starting to gel and
at the time of writing they’re managing
to match their league exploits from last year
as they sit almost identical in terms of points now
than they did at this stage last year.
The Champions League campaign was always going
to be tough and remains a work in progress
but things are looking positive in their attempts
to ensure they’re playing some form of European football next year.
Verona’s priorities are very different and their goal is simply to survive.
Eight defeats in their last ten matches leaves
their coach Paolo Zanetti hanging by a thread and
with their next in line Salvatore Bocchetti now poached
from under their noses by Monza,
it will be interesting to see how they deal
with their managerial situation in the coming days.
Bologna should beat them comfortably
which begs the question of where Verona go from here.
Only a surprise result will save Zanetti.

Udinese boss Kosta Runjaic is building a rather interesting team
that is developing into a true banana skin for anybody that faces it.
Despite showing signs of real inconsistency at times this year,
when the Friulians play at their best they are very tricky.
In Lorenzo Lucca they boast a striker
who is developing into a potential answer to Italy’s number nine worries.
When asked about a push for the European places
in the second half the season,
Runjaic was rather cautious and played down the idea
but with just eight points separating the team
from the Conference League qualification spot,
it must be a target for a team who could only get better
as the season goes on if their recent signs are proven true.
It is safe to say their upcoming opponents Torino
can’t say they have similar hopes as their early season promise
has well and truly hit the buffers.
The arrival of Paolo Vanoli looked to signal the beginning

Despite battling very bravely, Como fell to defeat away
to the current league champions on Monday night.
It took a last minute Marcus Thuram goal to add gloss
to a very close match that would’ve been rightly scored
at 1-0 to Inter who just about edged proceedings.
Whilst that performance in isolation is encouraging
as you only have to go back a week to the massacre
of Lazio handed out by Inter, performance aren’t enough
for a team in Como’s predicament.
High hopes were held for a team expected to do
more than scrape survival on their return to the top league.
Expensive and experienced imports haven’t quite yielded
their potential yet and with a rookie coach at the helm,
things aren’t quite going to plan.
A home tie against Lecce could be an opportunity
to pick up vital points but they certainly
won’t find Marco Giampaolo’s team in much of a festive mood
as they want the points for themselves to ensure
their recent upturn in form isn’t in vain.
Since Giampaolo replaced Luca Gotti at the start of last month,
his team have built a resilience and
have picked up some vital points that have moved them
from the relegation places into 14th place.
Whilst they’ve struggled against the likes of Roma and
Lazio, Giampaolo is experienced enough to know
that wins against teams directly around them
in the table are much more valuable.

who will be targeting the game as a must win.
Empoli are enjoying this season much more than last

but a memory now as Roberto D’Aversa has managed
to build a team that shows more defensive discipline
and builds its attack around two Milan club future hopes
in Sebastiano Esposito and Lorenzo Colombo.
His opposite number Patrick Vieira hasn’t quite had
as much time to work with his team and has arrived
at Genoa with a slightly different brief.
Expectations are higher at Il Grifone
given the club’s history and the way
in which they have established themselves back in the top league.
An early season injury crisis coupled with the sales
of key players saw Vieira’s predecessor Alberto Gilardino lose
his job and the team have been playing catch up since.
One thing Vieira has managed to do though is bring a more solid
approach to games with the team only conceding
more than once in two games since his arrival.
In a game that sees two teams facing off
with rather resilient defences,
it’d be sensible to expect this one to end in a low scoring draw.
Two players to look out for here are two Inter academy prodigies
