Nice v Rennes
Form somewhat goes out of the window as
Ligue 1 football makes its return this weekend.
For Nice, that certainly isn't a bad thing.
Franck Haise's side were in desperate need of a break.
They have benefitted from it.
Their diminished squad is bolstered by
the returns of Mohamed Ali-Cho,
Hicham Boudaoui and club captain Dante.
Nice still aren't at full strength, far from it,
but the returns of the trio represents a huge boost to Haise
who once again has some options across the lines.
They will have to make a difference because the level shown
by Le Gym prior to the winter break was not befitting of a team
fighting for European football.
They drew against bottom side Montpellier and only scraped
past lower-tier Corsican side Corte on penalties in
the Coupe de France.
They come up against a Rennes side
that were also out of sorts heading into the short winter break,
which lasted just a fortnight.
Despite finishing with a win against Angers,
they had won just one of their last five before that.
That has forced Rennes to be active in the transfer market,
even at this early stage,
as they look to avoid another season without
any form of European football.
Seko Fofana, who was imperious in his final season at
Lens before heading to Saudi Arabia, has returned to
Ligue 1 for a €20m fee.
It is a marquee signing and one that Les Rennais will
hope can turn around their season.
He will be looking to make an immediate impact against Nice.

You have to go a long,
long way back to find Lille's last defeat in any competition.
It came at the hands of Sporting in the Champions League
on 17th September;
their last defeat in Ligue 1 came just a few days
before on 13th September.
Returning after a short break has sometimes been an issue for Lille,
however,
that is more about players returning fatigued from a
draining international break,
with key player Jonathan David notably travelling across
the Atlantic to compete with Canada.
It isn't expected that there will be any such issues as Ligue 1 makes
its return and they will be expected to extend their long unbeaten run.
They come up against a Nantes side in turmoil.
They have just one win in their last 12 in Ligue 1 and
are hovering just one point above the relegation zone.
It is a run of form
that saw the club's owners try to change manager, albeit in vain.
Sergio Conceicao was approached for a dramatic return to
the Beaujoire, however,
he ultimately joined AC Milan,
whilst Habib Beye almost replaced Antoine Kombouaré on the sidelines.
The move to bring him in faltered at the final hurdle.
It left the owners with little choice but to retain Kombouaré.
Internally, it is not clear if there are tensions, however,
there are certainly tensions between him and the media.
He stormed out of the pre-match press conference,
refusing to talk to journalists and insisting
that he wouldn't be doing so again this season.
It is far from a serene environment.
On the pitch, Alban Lafont will not be in goal.
He has been axed and sent away from the first team
with former Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes joining in
recent days to take his place,
Given that he has not featured in over six months,
it is expected that he could look a little rusty against Lille,
who will likely try and test the former OL goalkeeper at any occasion.

there is more solidity too with Leonardo Balerdi looking
much closer to the levels that he reached last season.
There is also more control in possession and
fewer dangerous moments where they look vulnerable in transition.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's work out of possession has been crucial
in this regard, as has the return of Valentin Rongier,
who is now back to full form and fitness after around a year out.
With Rngier,
OM are a different side,
as the difficulties without him last season attested.
Le Havre is a nice easy game to ease Marseille back in.
The club are in full-blown crisis following their humiliating
defeat to lower-tier opposition in the Coupe de France.
With four losses in their last five in Ligue 1 too,
they aren't faring much better in the league and
they are currently in the relegation zone.
Didier Digard is hanging on as manager, however,
given the club's well-documented financial issues,
it would be difficult to move on and bring in a replacement
capable of representing an upgrade.
But the tide doesn't look like turning.
They have scored just 11 goals all season,
the lowest total of any side in Ligue 1.
Even with OM's difficulties in getting results at home,
Le Havre will head to the Vélodrome with little hope of bringing
back any points.

Steadying the defence may, therefore, be the priority.
Reims' defence has been steady in recent times.

Scoring goals remains an issue, especially given
their depleted attack force.
Recruitment may be the resolution to that issue.
On paper,
this one has the makings of a low-scoring encounter with ASSE
likely to have a cautious, defensive approach.

who now looks to have found his feet.
With all of the big-name strikers and wingers still at the club,
for now, they represent a formidable opponent
for a club as fragile and lacking in quality as Montpellier.
Having been knocked out of the Coupe de France
themselves by lower-tier opposition,
things could get nasty quickly for Montpellier.

brightly against an Auxerre side
that have not won any of their last four in all competitions.
Last time out, they were eliminated from the Coupe de France
at the hands of Ligue 2 sie Dunkerque.
Like RCSA,
they seemed to run out of steam before the break.
Prediction: Strasbourg 1-0 Auxerre

hot form with his combination with Ludovic Ajorque increasingly fluid.
There is no reason why that should not continue into the new year.
A win with a clean sheet will be on the cards here for Brest.

Toulouse but shutting out their opponents will be

the back of the net in eight of their last 10 games.
