Roma vs Lazio
Even with a number of the league’s top sides absent from Serie A
action this week due to the Supercoppa tournament in Saudi Arabia,
the Rome Derby is still the biggest match in
the Italian football calendar this coming Matchday.
The capital city’s bragging rights are as prestigious as any
and it doesn’t take any explanation to either side’s players on
how much this means to each set of fans.
One man who knows it as good as any is current Roma interim
boss Claudio Ranieri
who has grown up watching this game as a fan of the Giallorossi
as well as representing the club as a player and is now in
his third stint in charge of the team as a manager.
It appears that the 73 year old,
who was brought out of retirement to save a desperate situation
following the sackings of Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric,
is now finally starting to turn the tide and performances from
the team are looking far more convincing.
Four wins out of their last six and a strong showing in
their away draw with Milan last time out demonstrated
progress from their early season woes.
They will have to be at
their best though to beat Marco Baroni’s Lazio
who are enjoying a much more profitable season.
Despite a 6-0 hammering at home by Inter last month,
the team have galvanised themselves and followed it
up by comfortably beating Lecce and
were within minutes of toppling the almost invincible Atalanta.
This game will be high on emotion and given
the nature of some of the characters across both sets of players
such as the likes of Gianluca Mancini and
Mateo Guendouzi, there promises to be fireworks and
maybe even potential red cards.
Ranieri will want to end his Roma career with a win in
the derby and this is a chance to get it.
Baroni however would only enhance
his burgeoning reputation with a win here.
A draw looks likely in a game that no player wants to lose.

With Inter and Atalanta out of the country doing battle for
the Supercoppa, there is a real opportunity for
Napoli to gain a march in the race for the Scudetto,
even if it is only temporary.
Antonio Conte’s team must take advantage of the fact
that they have absolutely zero distractions between
now and the end of the season that could throw them off
the Serie A title hunt.
Whilst last season was a complete unmitigated disaster for
the club that resulted in three different managers,
unhappy players and agents and ultimately
the worst Scudetto defence in modern history,
one huge bonus is that the team don’t have to worry about
extra travel time, trying to compete in other competitions
domestically now with their Coppa Italia exit or extra player fatigue.
This makes them a real strong contender but in order to make
use of those advantages
they can’t afford to drop points when others aren’t playing.
Fiorentina will certainly not make things easy for them
though as Raffaele Palladino’s team have ambitions of their own.
In recent weeks, things have been difficult for La Viola
as the situation around Edoardo Bove dominated
the club’s immediate thoughts.
The game against Inter being postponed due to
Bove’s on pitch cardiac arrest not only sent the player’s and
staff’s concern away from on field action
but it also brought an end to a momentous run of wins
that put them into the title picture.
Since then, they’ve fallen nine points off the pace
but still sit in the top four which is where they want to
end the season and a win here could set things up
nicely heading into a new calendar year and get the team
back on a winning roll.
This will be close.
One goal either way could win it.

Venezia vs Empoli
The relegation picture in Serie A is becoming a little clearer
now as we approach the season’s halfway point.
As all teams will have played each other once,
or half of their fixtures in some cases like Fiorentina and
Inter who have their rescheduled game still to be decided,
come the end of week,
the league table will become a little clearer and
it will be obvious who needs to start worrying a little.
Before a ball was even kicked, many believed
that Venezia would struggle and so far they’ve been proven right.
They were promoted via the play offs from Serie B
last year making them the lowest ranked side heading into
the new campaign but to make matters worse
they also had to contend with a change of coach as the man
who led them to play off glory, Paolo Vanoli,
left to go to Torino.
His successor Eusebio Di Francesco was something of a surprise
pick given the way his last four managerial jobs have gone
including his most recent stint at Frosinone
last year where he took them down.
The team currently find themselves sat second from bottom and
three points off safety and that is a better situation
than it could’ve been given that results of late have been slightly better.
This weekend’s game is must win and they face a side
who know all about relegation dogfights in Empoli
who had to win one to stay up last year.
So far Roberto D’Aversa’s team are making the most of their time
in Serie A this year and sit well in mid table.
However, if Venezia are to stay up they must win matches
against provincial sides at home.
If they don’t win this, they and Di Francesco need to start panicking.

Torino vs Parma
It has been a rather strange season so far for Torino.
When Ivan Juric walked away in the summer as
he stated he felt he’d taken the team as far as he could,
there was a sense of trepidation about the future.
The team had made three years of steady progress under
the Croatian but lacked the financial power to go
one step further and compete for Europe.
That signalled that the club’s ambition was to maintain
its midtable position under new coach Paolo Vanoli
but things started so well that it looked like maybe
Juric was wrong to walk.
La Granata led the league early on and a mouthwatering
strike partnership of Duvan Zapata and Che Adams was
beginning to develop and had the team’s fans dreaming.
However,
injury to captain Zapata brought the season to a grinding
halt and since rather close losses to some of the league’s elite,
the team have only won twice since October.
A couple of draws of late mean they’re keeping
their heads above water in mid table but a couple more losses
could see Vanoli come under pressure.
Their upcoming opponents Parma would happily swap places
though as they simply cannot pull away from the dreaded trap door.
Just four points separate Fabio Pecchia’s men from
the relegation spots and it’s safe to say
they aren’t hugely confident away from home.
A close game is expected.
Don’t be surprised if it’s a scoring draw.

Verona vs Udinese
It wouldn’t be a typical Serie A season without Verona needing to
make the Bentegodi a fortress that allows them to stay up.
Bar a brief three year spell between 2019 and 2022
when both Ivan Juric and Igor Tudor managed to mould
the perennial strugglers into a surprise package
that finished well in midtable,
the Gialloblu have found it tough in the top flight.
Their best players get sold the second
they can make profit and their low budget means
it’s harder to attract players with much Serie A experience.
With Marco Baroni leaving at the end of last season to
take up the job at Lazio, Paolo Zanetti was enlisted
as the man to take up this year’s survival hopes.
Whilst some shrewd signings have been made such as
Benfica loanee Casper Tengstedt,
the team leak far too many goals and hold
the unwanted title of having the league’s leakiest defence.
Rumours have swirled around about the future of the team’s coach
but for now he seems safe and with the man
who many thought would be his successor now in at Monza,
Salvatore Bocchetti,
he might get a little longer to pull his team away from trouble.
Udinese don’t boast such worries and in all honesty
this year has been a change from the boredom or
panic of recent years.
New maverick coach Kosta Runjaic has the team
enjoying themselves and if they can find
a way to be a little more consistent,
they might finish as high as they’ve done for some time in
Serie A this season.
Whilst this game isn’t easy to predict, one thing you can
rely on is that the hosts probably won’t keep a clean sheet.

Monza vs Cagliari
One bonus of the league’s top teams being out of action is
that the focus can turn to those teams struggling
at the bottom and shed some light on their situations.
No team has it worst at current than Monza as they sit last in Serie A.
The club haven’t found themselves in this situation
since their very early days in Serie A in 2022
when they lost all of their first six games under Giovanni Stroppa.
The club’s hierarchy acted quickly and fired the coach
who had got them promotion and trusted
a young and untried Rafaele Palladino to save them.
That he did and he established the team as a mid table
side before departing for Fiorentina
in the summer along with this prized midfielder Andrea Colpani.
The team haven’t adequately replaced either and
as a result sit a horrible six points from safety and
new coach Salvatore Bocchetti has it
all to do following his recent arrival to replace Alessandro Nesta.
His new side have the worst home record in the league and
must start to pick up points against those around
them which means that this week’s upcoming tie
with Cagliari is must win.
Davide Nicola is used to fighting against the odds
at the bottom of the league and his Cagliari time
find themselves only slightly better off than Monza points wise.
They’ve won just once away all season so far and picked up
a measly five points on the road across eight trips on the road.
If Monza can’t win this it is really hard to see them having
enough about them to stay up.
Can their new manager begin a honeymoon period
with a positive result here? He should do.

Another team who find themselves in a spot of bother are Lecce.
The division’s lowest scorers find themselves teetering
above the drop zone in 17th and it appears
that Marco Giampaolo’s very short lived honeymoon period
as coach is well and truly at an end.
Vital wins over fellow strugglers Monza and Verona have been
great but back to back defeats to Como and Lazio have seen
the team dragged downwards and back towards
the trouble that Giampaolo found them in when he arrived.
A poor pre season and a number of hammerings
under previous coach Luca Gotti has left its mark
but ultimately the team’s inability to score goals is killing them.
A rather pathetic eleven goals so far from their nineteen
games is nowhere near good enough and their 31 goals
conceded only compounds their misery.
Their upcoming opponents Genoa find themselves blunt in
front of goal too following injuries to some of
their key attackers and the sales of last season’s two top goal
scorers and are also looking nervously over their shoulders a little.
Their gap to the drop isn’t quite as concerning of perilous
as Lecce but it is just five points and
whilst coach Patrick Vieira has only lost one game in
his tenure so far, against Napoli no less,
his Il Grifone team must start turning draws into wins
if they are to return to the comfort and safety of mid table
that they enjoyed last year.
This won’t be a goal fest and looks as if it could be another draw.
A result that doesn’t really suit either team.
