Brest v Lyon
"I'm not angry but I'm disappointed,"
was Eric Roy's reaction to a shock defeat to Angers at the weekend.
The return from the winter break always throws up a surprise
or two and there were plenty of shock results
as Ligue 1 football made its return last week.
Brest lost 2-0 to the relegation strugglers,
who scored two or more goals in the same match
for only the third time this season.
Roy went on to add that he fears that Les Ty-Zéfs
have now begun the calendar year on a bad footing and
that it could prove to be a slide difficult to arrest
with games against Lyon, Rennes, Shakhtar Donetsk,
and Real Madrid all coming this month and
PSG the Breton club's first opponents in February.
Brest's form this season has shown that when they get on a run,
they are difficult to stop, but when they are in a slump,
they find it difficult to get out. Losing
against Angers therefore sets a bad tone.
And as Roy points out, it doesn't get any easier.
Lyon themselves had an underwhelming start to the year.
They needed an injury-time own goal to beat Montpellier
at the death. Pierre Sage's side looked completely out of sorts;
they weren't the only side in the first matchday of 2025.
But they got away with it and with the win under their belts,
they can push on. Sage's side don't have any major injury concerns,
however, the club are managing to offload some of the deadwood.
Jeffinho and Gift Orban have already left and
as many as half-a-dozen others could follow
before the end of the month.
The hope is that most that depart will be fringe players.
That being the case,
it would actually make Sage's job easier, not more difficult.
Last weekend's respective results for these two sides
could have a big bearing on this result.
Prediction: Brest 1-2 Lyon

Perhaps it isn't quite time for the alarm bells to ring
but something is not right at Rennes.
Jorge Sampaoli is a tempestuous character.
He isn't everyone's cup of tea
but he does at least tend to galvanise a dressing room.
That is not the case at Rennes, contrary
to what we saw at this weekend's opponents, Marseille.
"We were punished for unforced errors," said Sampaoli
after a 3-2 defeat to Nice.
That was largely a reference to Steve Mandanda's howler,
which handed Nice's second goal on a plate for Sofiane Diop.
But it was a kind assessment of SRFC's performance.
Quite simply, they weren't pro-active enough to deserve any kind
of result and it feels odd to say that about a Sampaoli side.
There therefore hasn't been the short-term galvanising effect
that the Argentine is renowned for.
To make up for their deficiencies across the pitch,
there is a big recruitment drive.
Seko Fofana is already back and
has already made his debut for his new club.
He could make his first start for OM and judging
by what he showed in his limited minutes last weekend,
he could make a difference.
Enough to beat Marseille?
That remains to be seen.
Often poor at home,
Marseille swept Le Havre aside ruthlessly (5-1).
They were never in danger of not winning that match and
the signs were overwhelmingly positive.
Not only was it another win at home as they continue to build
in confidence at the Vélodrome, it was also a win
against a low-blocking, highly defensive side,
against the likes OM have struggled under Roberto De Zerbi.
OM have now scored five goals in a game
on three occasions under Marseille.
Unlike Rennes, they are an exciting proposition and
they are proactive in games.
The contrast is stark.
Based on recent form and on the quality of the respective sides,
it seems that only one result is possible.
Prediction: Rennes 1-3 Marseille

Little can be deduced from PSG's win over Monaco
in the Trophée des Champions.
Taking place in Qatar,
there was a pre-season feel to the game
that lacked intensity and conviction from both sides.
However, the win was assured and they returned
with no injury concerns and so Luis Enrique's side returned
to France with a trophy and with a full squad fit and
healthy and ready to take on 2025.
They return to league action with a very tricky tie
against Saint-Étienne, however.
On paper, this is an easy win,
given Saint-Étienne's league standing towards the drop zone.
However, under Erik Horneland,
they picked up a big win over Reims,
showing character to come from behind.
Two of their goals came from swift counter-attacks and
given that PSG will be expected to dominate possession
as Reims did, it is a gameplan that, if executed correctly,
could be rewarded against the new leaders,
who are no strangers to a dip in form around the turn of the year.
In the absence of Ibrahim Sissoko,
who is serving a five-game ban,
Lucas Stassin and Augustine Boakye stood up.
The former has looked short of confidence
but he is looking more and more valuable.
He already has four assists and his goal was expertly taken.
Both he and Boakye topped up their confidence
at a convenient time; they will both have to be efficient
in front of goal if they are to overcome the stern challenge
that is PSG. It still remains an uphill task for Les Verts
but not an insurmountable one and they could just pull off a shock.
Prediction: PSG 1-1 Saint-Étienne

Nantes v Monaco
Given the hostile context in the run-up to the game against Lille,
a draw was a very valiant result.
And it was deserved too.
Antoine Kombouaré's side were compact and
took their chances when it came
with Matthis Abline taking his penalty well and
even coming close to netting a late winner
in what was a very closed game with very few chances.
Can they replicate that at the Beaujoire
where the expectant home crowd will be expecting Nantes
to perhaps be more expansive?
Kombouaré may be forced to be pragmatic and
do just that in order to get a result against Monaco.
Monaco began 2025 with a loss to PSG
in the Trophée des Champions.
Even if it did come courtesy of a 92nd-minute
Ousmane Dembélé winner, the defeat was not undeserved.
Nantes, however,
are a completely different challenge and
breaking down their low block will be difficult.
The return of Denis Zakaria in midfield is a huge boost,
however, the issues up front continue with Breel Embolo
and George Ilenikhena both struggling to provide the goals
in Folarin Balogin's absence.
This could be a nervy one for the Principality club,
who nonetheless go into this one as strong favourites.
Prediction: Nantes 1-2 Monaco

despite taking the lead against Strasbourg,
went on to lose in Alsace.
They were outplayed on that occasion.
However, L'AJA are a completely different equation at home
and they have stifled big sides there.
PSG, Brest, and Rennes have all failed to take all three points
away from the Stade de l'Abbé Deschamps.
Their gameplan will be clear but with their pace and
quick combinations in transition, it can be a plan difficult to foil.
Lille had a tepid start to the year and
never really looked like blowing Nantes away.
With Angel Gomes returning to full fitness,
however, they could be a different prospect entirely this weekend.
Edon Zhegrova also missed out from that draw to Nantes
after pulling out at the last minute.
He is also expected to be back,
although Mathias Fernandez-Pardo is out.
The benefit of the returning players
much outweighs the absentees here,
although taking all three points is far from a given
against this stern Auxerre side.
Prediction: Auxerre 1-2 Lille

Reims are in something of a rut having won just one in their last nine.
It is a difficult run of form and their defeat
against Saint-Étienne was certainly merited.
This one is always an emotional encounter for Luka Elsner
on a personal level, given his father's attachment to the club
and the fact that he grew up in the city of Nice,
even playing in the club's academy.
Motivation will be high and at home,
they are much more difficult to play against.
Despite that aforementioned bad run,
they have lost just three times at home this season.
Nice are getting stronger as players return from injury.
They were strengthened against Rennes and
will also be able to count on Jonathan Clauss, Tom Louchet,
Moise Bombito, and Ali Abdi from this week.
It remains to be seen how many will be fit to start.
But for Franck Haise, there is a light at the end
of the tunnel of this injury crisis.
This is, however, a Nice side dogged by inconsistency,
and it is difficult to know which version will turn up.
Tanguy Ndombélé epitomises that and
with the midfield battle being so important in this one,
which version of Ndombélé - and Nice - turns up on the day
will define the result.
Prediction: Reims 2-2 Nice

That is undeniably true.
They are short on quality all over the pitch and
look set to lose Christopher Operi,
who has reportedly already travelled to Turkey
to complete a move away from the club.
Lens aren't in great shape themselves and
are contending with a crisis of confidence and
an injury crisis as well.
It is a difficult situation,
one exacerbated by a new regime
of austerity instilled by the club's president.
In such a situation, you couldn't ask for a better game
than the one against Le Havre.
If they can't beat Les Ciel et Marines,
all eyes will then be on Still.
Prediction: Le Havre 1-3 Lens

These kinds of games, classic six-pointers,
tend to be nervy and cautious affairs
with both sides desperate not to lose,
knowing what harm that could do to their survival chances.
There were signs of life against Lyon last week
but there is no natural finisher in this side and
come the end of the season, that could prove costly.
Angers, however, head into this one high
on confidence having beaten Brest.
They assumed the underdog mentality in that one.
They face MHSC on more of a level footing and
they will likely look to defend and take their chances
on the break when they can.
Prediction: Montpellier 1-1 Angers

I predicted a bright start to 2025 for RCSA
but Toulouse represent a very difficult challenge,
given their recent form and defensive solidity.
Prediction: Toulouse 0-0 Strasbourg
