Torino vs Juventus
It doesn’t seem like it was too long ago
that we were discussing the reverse fixture
that took place between these two sides.
The two old foes met on the 9th November at the Allianz
in a game that saw Juventus come out on top in a 2-0 win.
The win for Thiago Motta’s men continued
their rather embarrassingly one sided dominance in this fixture.
In the past thirty years,
Torino have only managed to beat their crosstown rivals once
in Serie A action, a record that ranks deep with fans of La Granata.
Many fans across Italy turn their noses up
at the Derby Della Mole due to its ridiculous one sided record
but for fans of both of these clubs,
it means a hell of a lot more.
Fans of Torino hold a certain amount of animosity
towards their nearest neighbours as a small part of them feels
that they were victims of the ultimate sliding doors era.
Pre World War Two,
Torino were arguably the best team in Europe.
They ruled the Italian league and their players made up
almost the entire starting XI of the national side.
However, tragedy struck in 1949 when the entire ‘Grande Torino’
side sadly lost their lives in a plane crash and
the club haven’t ever managed to truly recover and
are yet to win a league title since.
On the other side of the city though, Juve profited nicely
from the aftermath of the Second World War with their owners,
The Agnelli Family, making money from the production
of the Fiat vehicles that they co-founded.
Profits were made and were plowed into the football team and
where Torino fell away from the summit,
Juve rose up and have since gone on
to become the most successful team in Italy
with the most league titles and Coppa Italia wins.
It is safe to say that there is a huge grudge here,
a little more one sided than the other.
It is hard to see on current form
that Juve’s dominance in this fixture will end.
They should continue their unbeaten streak here.
Prediction: Torino 0-1 Juventus

Milan vs Cagliari
After a rather rough period of games against their nearest rivals,
Milan can finally say they hold bragging rights in their own city.
After being hammered in league action,
beaten in the Champions League semi-finals and
then beaten to seal a league title,
Milan have finally been able to wrestle back some control
in the Derby Della Madonnina.
After winning the first tie between the two back in September,
Milan made it two wins in a row by beating Inter
at the weekend to win the SuperCoppa.
Despite the tournament proving heavily unpopular with players,
coaches and fans due to its location and time in the season,
it seemed that by lifting the trophy it gave not only silverware
to the club’s impressive trophy cabinet
but it also helped start life under their new coach
in the best way possible.
Former Inter player Sergio Conceicao arrived
at the helm just in time for the tournament and
will have largely been impressed by his side’s ability
to see off both Juve and the current league champions.
Whilst the whole Paulo Fonseca debacle was handled very poorly
by the club in terms of his departure,
the appointment of Conceicao does lift spirits
around the club somewhat as well as proving
to be somewhat of a coup to convince the highly
rated former Porto coach to join mid season.
After a successful spell in Portugal,
the former winger sought to take some time out at the end
of last season and it seems as if he sees Milan
as the perfect place to undertake an ambitious project
of developing young talented players into title challengers.
For his first league outing he gets to meet the home fans
as his team host lowly Cagliari.
Davide Nicola’s side picked up an absolutely vital win away
at bottom of the table Monza to help pull them up the table and
towards the sides just above them.
Whilst the side from Sardinia will be buoyed by that recent result,
it is hard to see them picking anything up from this upcoming game.
This one promises to be a party atmosphere as the players and
fans celebrate their SuperCoppa win and
the first league game of their new coach.
Milan should win this in style.
Prediction: Milan 3-0 Cagliari

Venezia vs Inter
Inter will be feeling a little wounded
after losing their SuperCoppa crown to their city rivals Milan.
The late defeat, during a game that they led 2-0,
made it two defeats in a row against the side
they share a stadium with and meant
that they had to hand over silverware as well as bragging rights.
Whilst much of the past couple of seasons
have been hugely successful for Simone Inzaghi’s team,
this year has the potential to unravel or become the best yet.
The loss in the SuperCoppa final feels similar to their defeat
to Bologna is last year’s Coppa Italia in the sense
that it rids Inter of one cup competition and
allows them to focus on the league title and the Champions League.
Inter’s two games in hand mean that they can go clear at the top
of Serie A should they win them both,
however those games are against Fiorentina and
Bologna which will not come easy.
Drop points in those and they find themselves chasing
rather than being chased which is a position
they don’t want to find themselves in as they aim
to compete across multiple competitions once again.
If they can navigate this next busy run of games up
until February then they could well be set to achieve
even beyond last season.
They must start with a win in this upcoming match
against Venezia if they are to do so. Eusebio Di Francesco’s team
are finally starting to show some signs of being capable
in Serie A with their little mini run of form
over the last five games now lifting them
to within touching distance of safety.
The side has been bolstered by the return
of last season’s top scorer Joel Pohjanpalo
who has settled into Serie A life nicely
after he missed the season’s opening weeks with injury.
A trip to the lagoon is always a novelty for any set of fans
but fans of the Nerazzurri will only enjoy this one
if they manage to pick up maximum points and
rest some of their tired key men.
Prediction: Venezia 0-2 Inter

Bologna vs Roma
It is safe to say that Roma haven’t exactly enjoyed this season
much as they have found themselves lurking
from one disaster to the next for much of it
but Sunday’s win in the Derby Della Capitale
against Lazio finally gave everyone at the club something to smile about.
After the failed reigns of both Daniele De Rossi and
Ivan Juric this season, the wise old tactician Claudio Ranieri
returned to the helm of the club he holds close to his heart and
finally appears to be turning around in the right direction.
His handling of much maligned skipper Lorenzo Pellegrini
in the build up to the game was masterful
as he managed to extinguish all of the heat surrounding
the former Sassuolo midfielder and allow him to express himself
to the best of his capabilities which he duly did
in scoring the game’s opening goal.
Ranieri also appears to have now found a way
to get a partnership working between Paulo Dybala and
summer signing Artem Dovbyk.
Whilst Dybala quite rightly has a reputation for being one
of the league’s most technical gifted players,
a fact that he has proven over many years at the Giallorossi,
Juventus and Palermo, life for Dovbyk in Serie A
hasn’t quite worked out as well as yet
but his performance on sunday,
particularly his work alongside Dybala,
was much more encouraging.
A slight frustration for Ranieri is the fact
that his side face a tricky trip to a rather solid Bologna outfit
this weekend as they’d have perhaps favoured a kinder tie
to keep their momentum going.
Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna are a tough proposition and
they are particularly tough to beat on their home track.
Roma’s confidence coming into this one makes them
slight favourites but if they are going to win it it won’t be a rout.
Prediction: Bologna 1-2 Roma

Udinese vs Atalanta
Whilst some were disappointed with Atalanta’s showing
in the SuperCoppa tournament last weekend,
it is hard to be too harsh on the team.
Whilst the squad was bolstered heavily in the summer
with depth being added to a team that was frightening
enough already, it did make logical sense to rotate the team
for the rather inconvenient mid season trip to Saudi Arabia.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s team, despite their successes in recent years,
still don’t quite have the luxury of being able
to house heavy stockpiles of talent like some
of their more historically big counterparts and
with them wanting to push for the league title and
continue their European exploits into the latter stages
of the Champions League this year,
it did make sense for the team
to take an opportunity to rest some players.
Whilst in previous years they have found themselves in line
for a top four finish, this year is slightly different
as they sit comfortably in the title picture.
If they are to sustain this,
they must take advantage of resting their players and
then use such players in games that they should comfortably win
such as this weekend’s upcoming match with Udinese.
Whilst Kosta Runjaic’s team are enjoying this season
a little more than previous campaigns that have been littered
with a scattergun approach to signings,
a host of managerial changes and relegation troubles,
they will find it very hard to stop the well oiled machine that is La Dea.
A rested and focused Atalanta should have enough
to win here even if it is on the road.
Prediction: Udinese 1-3 Atalanta

유럽에서의 활약을 이어가기를 원하기 때문에
팀이 일부 선수들을 휴식시킬 수 있는 기회를 갖는 것은 당연한 일이었습니다.
예년에는 상위 4위 안에 들었지만,
올해는 타이틀 사진에서 편안하게 앉아 있어 약간 다릅니다.
이를 유지하려면 선수들의 휴식을 취한 다음
이번 주말 우디네세와의 경기와 같은 경기에서
편안하게 승리할 수 있는 선수들을 기용해야 합니다.
코스타 룬자익의 팀은 이번 시즌을 영입에 대한 분산 공격 방식,
수많은 감독 교체 및 강등 문제로 얼룩졌던 이전 캠페인보다

Lazio vs Como
Marco Baroni’s Lazio find themselves in a similar position
to current champions Inter and they come into this weekend
off the back of a damaging defeat against their closest rivals.
Despite having the lion’s share of possession
during the game on Sunday night,
the Biancocelesti couldn’t find a way
through the backline of Roma and were left frustrated.
The loss adds a real sense of annoyance for Baroni
who finds all the progress his team has made a little blunted
by games against bigger sides who bar Napoli they’ve failed to beat.
Still, this season has been a hugely positive one and
most Lazio fans would be delighted
if you would have told them at the start of the campaign
they’d be where they are now at the halfway point.
One of their most impressive performances of the campaign
so far was their 5-1 thrashing of Como in the reverse fixture
between these two teams, a game that will live long
in the memory of their opposition coach Cesc Fabregas’ memory.
Como got a week’s respite with their game with Milan moved
due to the SuperCoppa and it will be interesting to see
if some rest will be of any help to them.
Under the Friday night lights in the setting
of their previous weekend’s disappointment,
expect Lazio to avenge their derby defeat by handing out
another beating to a sorry looking Como.
Prediction: Lazio 3-0 Como

Napoli vs Verona
It seems a very long while ago that Verona were humbling Napoli
on the opening day and consigning Antonio Conte to a 3-0 defeat
in his first league game as coach of his new team.
In the aftermath, the animated Conte called on the club
to back him with reinforcements to his squad and
it is safe to say it is a good job they did.
Barring a couple of disappointing losses in games against Lazio
and Atalanta, Napoli have enjoyed an excellent season
since their nightmare at the Bentegodi and
find themselves well within reach of the Scudetto
that they won less than two years ago.
With no European football to contend with unlike their rivals
for the crown Inter and Atalanta, the Partenopei have extra rest
and a tunnel visioned focus on the league and
are able to therefore keep their players that bit fresher.
Whilst Napoli have bounced back well from that August night
in Verona to have a good season so far,
it hasn’t quite worked out as well for the victors on that night,
Hellas, who find themselves well entrenched in a relegation battle.
After a couple of seasons of real growth under Ivan Juric and
Igor Tudor, Hellas have reverted back to their traditional role
as low budget strugglers and if they can’t find a way
to start keeping clean sheets, they might find this year’s battle
for safety a task too far.
It is very hard to imagine a world where Verona manage
to take something from this upcoming game
as Conte will be keen to ensure his side make up
for the shock loss in the reverse fixture.
Prediction: Napoli 2-0 Verona

Monday night sees Monza host Fiorentina
in another must win game for the Brianzan outfit.
Another loss last weekend,
this time to fellow strugglers Cagliari, raised further alarm bells
at the club as their bad start to the campaign is now
slowly starting to turn into a complete disaster
as they reached the season’s halfway point with just one win
to their name and sitting bottom of the league table,
seven points from safety.
The change in coach has resulted in zero change
to the team’s form and even though they aren’t playing
badly enough to deserve to be bottom of the league,
they have to start turning these constant single goal narrow
defeats into at least a point if they are to stay in the division.
Fiorentina boss Raffaele Palladino will no doubt look
upon his old club with a sense of sadness as the work
that he did over the past two seasons to turn them
into a mid table team looks as if it has completely unraveled.
He won’t have too much sympathy though
as he has his own problems with his Fiorentina side in need
of a real boost as their steam train like run has hit a real
abrupt standstill in recent weeks.
Their 3-0 home defeat to current leaders Napoli was a bitter pill
to swallow with winger Riccardo Sottil saying
after the game that the team need to wake up and
get back to their best if they are to make sure
they don’t waste their good start to the season.
This one could be close as neither will want to lose.
Fiorentina should just have a little too much quality for Monza
and will catch their opponents low on confidence.

Roberto D’Aversa hosts his former side Lecce
who will be very keen to get one over on their old boss.
D’Aversa’s rather acrimonious departure
from the Via Del Mare at the end of last season
after he headbutted then Verona striker Thomas Henry
at the end of a match made it look as if it would be something
of a surprise to see him work in Serie A again.
When Empoli parted ways with Davide Nicola in the summer
it was a shock to see D’Aversa rock up as his replacement.
Despite his many critics,
he’s done a solid job with his main success being
that he’s helped bring on young talents such as Lorenzo Colombo,
Sebastiano Esposito and Jacopo Fazzini.
One thing he will be slightly wary of though
is his side’s recent slump that has seen them
lose three times in four matches.
Lecce have won one, drawn one and lost seven
of their away games so far this season so that gives Empoli
some hope that they can get a positive result from this one.
Marco Giampaolo’s arrival at Lecce has seen them improve
a little but their inability to score goals is frightening.
Just eleven scored so far this season leaves them in a position
where they now have to pull themselves out of the relegation zone.
That inability to score means they’ll find it hard to breach
a stubborn home defence that has kept four clean sheets
so far this year and picked up thirteen points at the Castellani.
Empoli should edge this.

Genoa vs Parma
Sunday’s lunchtime kick off sees Genoa take
on Parma at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
You can safely say that Genoa have perhaps
become the least excited side to watch
since Patrick Vieira’s arrival at the club
but that neither he nor the fans or even his players will care
to hear that as it’s something of a backhanded compliment.
Only Napoli have beaten them since he arrived and
despite them playing out three 0-0 draws in his eight league
fixtures so far, the team has lifted itself from the foot
of the table into 13th place.
Whilst a seven place rise is commendable the job
isn’t done yet though as just three points separates the team
from dropping back into the relegation places.
With so many teams once again involved in a battle to try
and escape the worries of having to look back over their shoulders,
Genoa must make sure they turn draws into wins more regularly,
especially at home in games against those around them.
Beating Parma at home is the place to start
but it’s safe to say that Fabio Pecchia’s team will also be looking
at this one thinking similar things as they want to drag
themselves up the table and away from trouble.
Parma are building a reputation for being a tough team to play
but they are yet to show any kind of consistent form all season.
Their impressive win against Lazio was then followed
by three straight defeats including a 5-0 humbling by Roma.
Either side could win this one and
we know with Genoa involved it could well be low scoring.
Vieira’s team having a little more Serie A know how and
consistency could see them edge it.
Their main striker Andrea Pinamonti could be in the goals too.
