After enjoying a really bright start to
the 2024/25 Premier League season,
Chelsea’s festive period in the competition didn’t
quite go as planned overall.
A 1-1 draw away to Crystal Palace last time out
made it four league outings without success,
as their unlikely title challenge received
a fresh set of blows.
A 5-0 win against lower league opposition
in the form of Morecambe in the FA Cup over
the weekend will have hopefully lifted sprits
a little for the home side, who now return to
Stamford Bridge looking to end
their poor current form in the top-flight.
Last time out here in the league,
they lost 2-1 to near-neighbours
Fulham courtesy of a 90th minute winner
from the Cottagers but this midweek
could bring with it some much overdue success.
That’s because having lost consecutive
Premier League games against Bournemouth in 2019,
Chelsea are now unbeaten in
their last six against the Cherries
which will have the home faithful
expectant of another win.
The home side also still have one of
the competition’s best players at their disposal
as Cole Palmer has created more chances
than any other player in the Premier League this season.
But this latest fixture will very likely prove
more difficult than it has done over recent
years for the Blues,
as Bournemouth make the trip north to London
sat in the dizzying heights of seventh place ahead of kick off.
They’ve enjoyed a stunning campaign so far,
and with the Cherries now unbeaten across
their last ten league outings –
their joint-longest ever run in the top-flight –
they’ll be keen to take advantage of any
potential Chelsea weakness.
On top of that, Bournemouth have also won
on three of their last five league visits to Stamford
Bridge to face Chelsea and will be desperate
to further extend that run and at the same time,
close the gap even more to the European
spots come the end of this round of fixtures.

Liverpool have taken more points than Brentford across
their home Premier League games,
with Thomas Frank’s side making the Gtech Stadium
into a fortress in 2024/25.
That’s helped to anchor their impressive return
thus far this season,
as they begin this matchday sat in 11th spot and
with eyes on a potential European qualification finish
this time around rather than
taking part in a relegation dogfight.
But in order to extend
their great home form again this midweek.
They’ll have to overcome reigning champions
Manchester City, who have begun to improve
their form across recent weeks.
The Citizens beat League Two Salford City 8-0
in their FA Cup outing at the weekend,
a result which made it three wins in succession in the process.
The first two of those came in the Premier League,
and although a title push during
the remainder of the season is almost impossible at this stage,
they will at least want to finish as close to the eventual winners.
They begin this round of fixtures sat just
two points outside of the top four and will be desperate
to seal another win over the London outfit here in
order to further put pressure on those sides
above them in the current standings.

the latest North London derby.
It was a rough weekend for the Gunners in particular,
as they failed to take their chances and advantage of ten-man
Manchester United during a penalty
shoot-out loss to the Red Devils in the FA Cup.
As such,
manager Mikel Arteta will be absolutely desperate to
get his side back onto the training ground and
to work on a number of weaknesses
they showed in that game in order to get
the better of their fierce rivals here.
A glance at the recent head-to-head history between
these two sides suggests that that may be likely,
with Arsenal winning six of their last eight
Premier League games against Spurs.
One of those victories came in the reverse fixture
earlier this season during a 1-0 success and now,
they’ll be looking to complete a first ever competition
double over their fellow North Londoners
without conceding a goal in the process.
Tottenham arrive here on the back of advancing
through to the FA Cup fourth round at the weekend,
though that hardly tells the full story
about their game against non-league outfit Tamworth.
