After the highs of winning the Supercoppa last weekend,
Milan were slapped back down to reality
by a gutsy performance from a struggling Cagliari side
when they returned to league action on Saturday night.
After beating both Juventus and Inter in new coach
Sergio Conceiçao’s first two matches, the honeymoon
period was very much alive and after winning
a piece of silverware after defeating the latter,
many predicted that it would cause the Rossoneri to
go on a run of form.
Given the quality that the team possesses in its ranks
and the fact that some of the players in the squad have
a real tendency to go on runs of form that see them
perform unstoppably for a period, it looked like
a home tie with Cagliari could be a launchpad for
the team to go on and keep their start under
their new coach running into the league campaign.
However, it wasn’t to be and it’s safe to say that
Davide Nicola’s very tricky Cagliari team rolled
their sleeves up and turned the game into a real
battle and deservedly left San Siro with a draw.
The draw suited the side from Sardinia
who many had written off before a ball was even
kicked but for Milan it left fans scratching their heads as
to how their team were unable to overcome
a relegation battling team in their own ground off
the back of winning a trophy.
They don’t have to wait long or have to travel too
far though to see their team back in action as
they find themselves embarking on an hour and
a half’s trip to Como to take on another side at the wrong
end of the table.
Cesc Fabregas’s Como are working hard in the transfer market to
try and bolster their squad and pull themselves
away from the drop zone and it appears
that the club’s ambition is helping inspire
their players as they completed a neat comeback to
draw away in Rome against Lazio on Friday night.
If they can harness the same spirit they could provide
yet another stumbling block for a Milan side desperate to
kick start their league season.

Inter vs Bologna
Inter bounced back from the disappointment of losing
last week’s Supercoppa final to their nearest rivals
Milan by completing a professional job over
Venezia at the Penzo on Sunday afternoon.
The Nerazzuri, missing a number of first team players s
uch as Hakan Calhanoglu, Yann Bisseck and Francesco Acerbi,
managed to see off the threat of a relegation candidate
at the Penzo Stadium and complete a second
successive 1-0 win over Eusebio Di Francesco’s side.
As mentioned,
it looks as if injuries are starting to haunt Simone Inzaghi’s
team as they continue to battle on all fronts this season.
It is safe to say that it has been a very heavy few years
for Inter as they’ve fought in Europe and
to the bitter end in title races and cup competitions.
Whilst in Italy they have pulling power and
they aren’t financially struggling to pay transfer fees for
players they deem worthy,
they simply do not have the ability to spend
their way to squads like the likes of Manchester City
or Real Madrid which means that a lot is asked of their players
and some are beginning to tire.
At least this week they find themselves back at San Siro
for the first time in over a fortnight as
they do battle with a Bologna team
who found their weekend’s outing rather frustrating.
Despite leading with just moments to go,
the Rossoblu had to settle for a draw at home to Roma
as Ukranian striker Artem Dovbyk stole a point for
his side to take back with them to the capital.
Still, things aren’t working out too badly for coach Vincenzo
Italiano and his team as despite their struggles
in the Champions League they are fighting hard in
Serie A and sit seventh at the time of writing.
They will provide a tough test for a tired Inter and
they also have experience of winning at San Siro against
the Nerazzuri in recent memory following
last season’s Coppa Italia win.

Atalanta vs Juventus
Just when this season cannot get any more bizarre for
Thiago Motta’s Juventus, it does.
The former Inter and Barcelona midfielder has found
the transition from Bologna to the Juve job
a real challenge as he has had to deal with a transition
in the playing squad and a rather crazy amount of injuries.
As his team and he get used to each other,
they continue to frustrate their supporters
who simply cannot decide how they feel about their team.
Whilst there is understandable frustration
that the team once again missed out on silverware after
losing in the semi finals of the Supercoppa and
the fact that they’re also way behind in the race for
the title when compared to the like of Inter,
Napoli and Atalanta, they inexplicably still haven’t
lost a Serie A match this season.
The problem is, they can’t stop drawing and
drawing is also a frustration of their upcoming
opponents too.
Atalanta found themselves held by
the rather tricky and frustrating Kosta Runjaic inspired
Udinese who are starting to create something of a reputation
for themselves as they continue to form into a
serious Serie A side after years of procrastination.
The draw in Friuli was hugely frustrating for Gian Piero
Gasperini who saw his side drop to third and
to five points back from leaders Napoli who managed to
get a comfortable win over Hellas Verona and
keep up their run as the top.
Whilst Atalanta have strengthened and made
their team better and even more expansive this year,
to be title winners you have to have a certain
unbeatable streak that cannot be halted for period of time.
Gasperini’s team over the past few years have
hammered opponents but are known for runs of poor results.
They cannot afford to let points dropped in Friuli turn
into a run that sees them fall away from the title picture
that they worked so hard to put themselves into.
Juve will make it very difficult though
so logic suggests this one ends in a draw.
Prediction: Atalanta 1-1 Juventus
