Aston Villa vs Liverpool
After enjoying a steady start to the season
which highlighted them as UEFA Champions League qualification
hopefuls once again, this past month or so has proved
especially difficult for Aston Villa.
After drawing with Arsenal and West Ham,
Wolves then defeated Unai Emery’s side
before their recent plight got even worse
as struggling Ipswich Town stole a point away
from Villa Park at the weekend.
That recent return has therefore seen the Villans drift
to ninth spot ahead of this showdown with Liverpool,
a side who have severely had the better of them over recent times.
That will hardly come as music to the ears of the Villa faithful then,
who will be very keen to witness their side get back
to winning ways on home soil for the first time in the league
since early January when they defeated Midlands
rivals Leicester City 2-1.
It could be suggested that a return to the winning column
is extremely unlikely this midweek however,
as Aston Villa have lost six of their last seven Premier League games
against sides starting the day top of the table.
That’s a position in which visiting Liverpool find themselves,
as they defeated Wolves 2-1 last time out at Anfield
despite not producing a performance at the highest level.
In fact, in that match Liverpool didn't attempt a single shot
in the second half against Wolves
- the first time on record that the Reds had failed
to register a shot in a single half of Premier League football at Anfield.
But manager Arne Slot simply won’t care
as that result made it 21 Premier League games
without loss for the away side
who almost already have one hand on the title.
That’s because ahead of kick-off here,
they have a commanding seven-point lead
over title chasers Arsenal under their belt and
with another victory, would seriously outline their intentions
to see off their closest competitors as early as possible.
Another three-point haul here wouldn’t come as a shock either,
as Liverpool have now won eight of their last 10 visits
to Villa Park in the Premier League.
To make matters even better for the visitors,
they’ve only won more matches in the competition
against West Ham (36) and Newcastle (35)
than they have against Aston Villa (34),
as their march towards a second Premier League title
after 2018/19 looks set to pick up even more speed here.
