This is a vital game at the bottom end of La Liga
as the teams in 19th and 18th places meet.
With the likes of Valencia and Espanyol improving,
it’s hard to envisage a scenario
where both Las Palmas and Alaves survive, so a victory
here would be a huge boost for the winning team.
Both sides have some significant selection issues heading into it.
Las Palmas are missing regulars Viti Rozada and
Dario Essugo to suspension,
while they have a doubt over defender Andy Pelmard.
Their forward-line is now back to full strength,
with Alberto Moleiro, Fabio Silva and Sandro Ramirez
all expected to start this game.
However the confidence they were playing with at the end
of 2024 has completely evaporated,
and Diego Martinez’s side could only manage one shot on
target in the 1-0 defeat at Real Betis last weekend.
They remain winless in 2025, and it’s like they’ve reverted
back to the side that went 10 months without
a competitive victory last year.
The midfield is perhaps the biggest area of concern
heading into this game, with Essugo and
Kirian Rodriguez almost irreplaceable in the middle of the park.
Stefan Bajcetic and Jose Campaña are both talented ball-players,
but I expect Alaves will have the physical edge in
the centre of the pitch in this game.
The Basque side finally got a good result to go with
the relatively strong performance levels
we’ve seen from them
since Chacho Coudet’s appointment last weekend.
Manu Sanchez’s early goal was enough for a 1-0 win
over high-flying Villarreal, and they defended
brilliantly despite ending the game with only nine
players after red cards for Antonio Sivera and Antonio Blanco.
With Moussa Diarra also picking his fifth booking of the season
in that game,
they are also hampered by suspensions here.
However, they have slightly more convincing options to
fill those holes than their opponents, assuming back-up keeper
Jesus Owono can shake off an injury to feature.
Perhaps the biggest improvement since the appointment
of Coudet has been their increased ability to compete on the road.
They’ve only lost one out of seven road games under the new boss,
and that was a really narrow defeat at leaders Barcelona.
They’ll be much the more confident team heading into
this match after a fine result last weekend,
and I fancy them to back it up with three points here.
Prediction: Alaves win

It’s a key weekend in the title race and
Real Madrid are in action first.
Victory in a tough game at the Ceramica would be
a huge boost to their chances of defending their crown,
but this is exactly the kind of match
where they’ve been slipping up this season.
Real Madrid are yet to win away in La Liga against
any of the teams in the top eight heading into matchday 28.
They’ve consistently found it tough going on
the road against the stronger teams,
most recently against Real Betis when they were deservedly
on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.
Even at home against Rayo Vallecano last time out in
La Liga they were not impressive,
with some jeers from the home fans as
they hung on for a 2-1 win against their smaller,
local rivals who had twice as many shots in that game.
They weren’t great in midweek either,
losing 1-0 at Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their
Champions League round-of-16 tie, but as so often
happens in that competition,
they still found a way through on penalties.
Los Blancos face what’s likely to be a wounded Villarreal side here.
They somehow failed to score in a 1-0 defeat at
Alaves last weekend,
despite their opponents being reduced to nine players,
in one of the worst performances of the season
from Marcelino’s side.
Overall though, they have been playing pretty well,
and the Yellow Submarine had picked up 14 points
from their previous six games to cement
their status as strong Champions League contenders.
Marcelino may return to a slightly more combative starting
lineup here,
with Santi Comesaña potentially replacing Dani Parejo
in the middle of the park.
That should allow them to compete in central
areas against a Real Madrid side
that hasn’t enjoyed quite as much control in midfield
since losing Dani Ceballos to an injury.
The home team are also capable of exploiting
Madrid’s problems at right-back given the huge threat
that Alex Baena poses on the left flank.
As long as Villarreal's significant recent defensive
improvement holds here,
they’ve got every chance of winning this match against
a Real Madrid side that may struggle to keep going
for the full 90 minutes following their big midweek exertions.

This is a big game in Barcelona’s season,
but a potentially decisive one for Atletico Madrid,
at least in terms of their title ambitions.
They’d be four points off the pace, having played a game
more than Barca, were they to lose it and
it’s difficult to see any way back from that position.
Three points for Atleti on Sunday would be a huge
statement of intent that they really mean business
heading into the run-in following the international break,
with all of their final 10 fixtures against sides outside the top five.
The stakes are enormous here, but Atletico Madrid
will really be feeling the effects of a busy fortnight.
They are at a slight disadvantage in that they played in
the Champions League on Wednesday rather than Tuesday night.
They also had much the tougher game,
defeating Real Madrid 1-0 over 120 minutes,
before succumbing in cruel fashion on penalties,
with Julian Alvarez’s slip proving very costly.
Barcelona meanwhile,
cruised into the quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate
win over Benfica, without any real drama.
It’s going to be both a physical and psychological
challenge for Atletico Madrid to pick themselves up
to go again here.
Losing the derby in such painful fashion would have hurt,
and there’ll certainly be some tired legs in their camp,
given they also fielded a stronger than expected
lineup last weekend when they lost 2-1 at Getafe in La Liga,
with Angel Correa’s late red card the turning point.
Barcelona by contrast, did not play last weekend,
after the sudden passing of club doctor Carles Miñarro
forced the postponement of their game against Osasuna.
That game will need to be rearranged,
which could lead to a fixture pile-up at the backend of the season,
but it should ensure they are the fresher of the two teams here.
Pau Cubarsi will return in defence following his Champions
League suspension,
but the big challenge for Atleti is going to be trying to
stop the outstanding Pedri in midfield,
with the 22-year-old providing great service all season
for Barca’s front three.
It’s a front three that continues to fire.
Raphinha took his season tally to 27 goals with
a brace in the Champions League in midweek.
Lamine Yamal also scored a brilliant solo goal in
that game which would have been a timely morale
boost for the teenager
who hasn’t quite hit his usual heights in some recent games.
With Robert Lewandowski still the most clinical
striker in the division,
I fancy Barca will have the better of this game,
and continue their record of delivering
big performances in most of the big matches this season.

them out of this very bleak position,
with 11 points separating them from safety.
Celta Vigo have not travelled well this season,
but they have picked up good results against Atletico Madrid and
Girona in their last two away games.
Their overall form is improving and they’ve only got
a couple of injury concerns heading into this match.
Celta really impressed on the left flank,
with goals from Oscar Mingueza and Alfonso Gonzalez sealing
a 2-1 win over Leganes last time out,
and there’s enough variety to their attacking play to seal the win here.
Prediction: Celta Vigo win
바야돌리드 vs 셀타비고
바야돌리드는

They remain very well-organised defensively,
but they are still a little bit one-dimensional at times,
with so much of their attacking play going through Vedat Muriqi.
Their overall performance levels have picked up in recent weeks
though, and I fancy they might
be just too strong for Espanyol here.
The visitors are in good form,
but they were a bit fortunate to take four points
from their last two games against Alaves and Girona.
While they’ve improved since the turn of the year,
this is still an Espanyol side with certain limitations,
and this is a game that the home team should be looking to win.
Prediction: Mallorca win

After a bleak start to 2025, there were some positives
for Girona boss Michel to take from his team’s performance in
the 1-1 draw against Espanyol on Monday night.
They really pushed their opponents back in the latter
stages of that game, and were more than
worthy of the point they got thanks to Cristhian Stuani’s late penalty.
They should have the better of this with home advantage,
but whether they can make that superiority count is more doubtful,
with none of their attacking players looking
confident in front of goal.
Valencia are obviously on an upward trajectory under
Carlos Corberan, and they’ve not lost
against anyone outside of the top three since his appointment.
With Umar Sadiq boosting their goal threat in attack,
and young midfielder Enzo Barrenechea really starting to
impress in the centre of the pitch,
they should have enough quality to avoid relegation
from this position.
With their home form good,
I suspect Corberan
will be more than happy to settle for a point here.

It’s four straight league wins for Real Betis,
with the sensational form of Isco,
complemented by better attacking options around him,
transforming the outlook of their season.
However, I’m not sure we’ll see the best version of Betis here.
They are sure to name a strong lineup for the second leg of
their Conference League tie against Vitoria Guimaraes on Thursday,
and there’s likely to be some fatigue creeping in
at the end of a very busy fortnight.
Whether Leganes are good enough to take full advantage of
that is more doubtful.
Their forward-line is the weakest in the division,
with the possible exception of Real Valladolid.
While Diego Garcia produced a moment of magic to win
their last home game against Getafe,
he and fellow striker Miguel de la Fuente have just three goals
between them this season in La Liga.
I can see them getting a result here, but I’m not sure
they’ll have enough to fully punish what may be a tired Betis side.

Sevilla picked up an excellent
three points at Real Sociedad last time out,
and they are bidding to complete a Basque double
this weekend against Athletic.
Garcia Pimienta has done a good job of adapting his style
to the players at his disposal.
He doesn’t have as many ball-playing options as he might like,
but he’s developed a system that is keeping things
a bit tighter at the back,
whilst getting plenty of service to their main attacking
threat Dodi Lukebakio.
After a free midweek, I can see them potentially winning
this game against an Athletic side that will be throwing
everything at their Europa League round-of-16 second
leg against Roma on Thursday night.
There has been a clear drop-off in the league form of Ernesto
Valverde’s side and it’s also worth noting
that they’ve only won one of their nine La Liga games
this season that have immediately followed European fixtures.
Prediction: Sevilla win

Two late strikes from Mauro Arambarri sealed a long-awaited
win for Getafe over local rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend.
They’re now level on points with Osasuna,
on the fringes of the race for European places,
heading into this match.
It’s hard to make a strong case for either side winning it.
Osasuna have only won one of their last 14 games in La Liga,
and they are struggling to see games out as well at
El Sadar as was the case earlier in the season.
One or two defensive errors have started to creep in,
although they can still rely on Ante Budimir to provide
a consistent goal threat up top.
Getafe are a strong side defensively,
and they have added a bit more to their attacking play over
the past few months
which has been the catalyst for a big improvement in their form.
They are still fundamentally a defensively-minded side though,
and I don’t see them creating enough opportunities to
leave Pamplona with all three points.

Despite some significant selection issues,
Rayo Vallecano gave a really good account of themselves
at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend.
They had 20 shots and 55% of the possession in
that game and really put Real Madrid under significant
pressure in the latter stages.
