This weekend’s blockbuster match in Serie A needs
very little explanation.
The clash of the blue and black stripes sees challengers
Atalanta host current league leaders Inter.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s La Dea outfit come into this fixture
fresh off the back of producing quite simply
one of the most sensational results of the season so far.
Their 4-0 demolition of Juventus in their own backyard put
the rest of the league on notice and formally

Many thought that following their rather damp run of form
coming off the back of their premature Champions League
exit at the hands of Club Brugge
that the Bergamo based side were about to fall off and
well away from any kind of Scudetto challenge.
Even last week’s 0-0 draw at home to struggling
Venezia left fans puzzled and wondering
if the team’s season was about to nosedive into the abyss.
However, those fans were very wrong and
their statement in Turin showcased that the team is
far from done and now that they have just
the league to focus on, they’re keen on making the most of it.
One thing they don’t have in their favour at
the moment though is their inability to beat Inter.
or all their excellent growth in recent years,
they’ve struggled against the Nerazzuri.
They haven’t beaten them since 2018 and
have lost seven on the bounce in this fixture.
This record will please Simone Inzaghi
who will also be buoyed by the fact his team are
now into the quarter finals of the Champions League.
Captain Lautaro Martinez got a rest as did
Nicolo Barella and the likes of Federico DiMarco and
Nicolas Zalewski were able to continue
their recovery from recent short term injuries.
ou can imagine that at least the former of
that quartet will be back in action at the weekend
but with a bit more energy in their legs
which will please their coach
who is keen to stress that his side are well in
the market for a treble.

Fiorentina vs Juventus
Pretty much everything that could go wrong went
wrong for Juventus last week.
After managing to silence doubters and protesters during
the previous week’s tidy win over Verona,
it appeared that life was about to get a little smoother
for Thiago Motta and his men.
Pundits and fans alike were even beginning to speculate
whether or not Juve could actually mount a late title
challenge as they pulled themselves to
within just six points of the summit.
However, those ideas proved to be premature and
Juve proved why they aren’t quite there yet by
allowing themselves to be absolutely
annihilated on their home turf by a rampant Atalanta.
When Atalanta are great they’re absolutely ruthless and
devastating and poor Juve ended up being
caught in the crossfire but in all honesty,
they were that poor they were lucky that it was only 4-0.
The fact that their goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio
was handed man of the match tells you that story.
So it’s back to the drawing board once again for
Motta and his team who now have to pick themselves up
and maintain their push for the top four and a trip to
Fiorentina isn’t an easy place to start.
Whilst Rafaelle Palladino’s team have lost five of
their last six in all competitions and have fallen out
of immediate top four contention,
they’re far from a push over and at the Artemio Franchi
they’re able to build a hostile atmosphere.
It is very well known that fans of La Viola have a certain
level of hate for Juventus, a feeling that peaked around
the time that Roberto Baggio left the club for
Juve prior to the 1990 World Cup.
Since then,
the likes of Federico Bernardeschi,
Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic have followed in
Baggio’s footsteps and been met with angry vitriol.
Juve need a reaction after last week
but they’re going to fight little sympathy from a team
who need a result themselves and against a fan base
who hate them to their core.
A narrow Viola win could be on the cards.

Napoli are doing a truly excellent job of sneaking
around under the radar in the race for the Scudetto.
It feels as if much more focus has been placed on current
leaders Inter who are rightly earning praise for being in
the hunt for three pieces of silverware at the same time and
with Atalanta’s rather ridiculously sublime heroics last weekend,
they’ve even become the talk of the league over the past few days.
Even last weekend,
many were choosing to focus Juve’s potential
chances of a title push a little more so than
Napoli’s valuable late equaliser against Inter.
This suits Antonio Conte just fine though.
He is more than happy to have his team going about
their business with a minimum of fuss and
whilst continuing to claim that his team is weaker now
that it has sold its best player and
that they’re simply just targeting a top four finish rather than
being complete title contenders.
He isn’t fooling anyone though.
His team are well and truly in the battle for the title and
if they can find a way to continue to get goals from
Romelu Lukaku and keep him fit, they won’t go far wrong.
Unlike Inter, this upcoming match is their only game
this week and it is a trip to the lagoon to face
second bottom Venezia.
Whilst Eusebio Di Francesco’s team have managed to
frustrate both Lazio and Atalanta in recent weeks,
they are doomed as despite those battle hardened
performances they aren’t picking up enough
wins to be able to drag themselves out of relegation trouble.
They will do their utmost to try and make it
as difficult as they can for Conte’s side as they welcome
the Neapolitans to their old and charming ground
but they do so with the joint third worst home record in
Serie A so far this season.
They’ll try their best but this kind of match is
one that Antonio Conte thrives upon.
The former Inter and Juve coach knows how to find
a way in this type of game so expect his team to
do just enough to manage the day and escape
with three more vital points in the race for the title.

Milan vs Como
The arrival of Sergio Conceicao was meant to breathe
new life into a struggling Milan side.
After failing to get going at all this season under
previous coach Paulo Fonseca, the club decided
that they needed to change coach and decided to keep
things Portuguese and hire former Inter winger Conceicao.
In his previous role with Porto, he built a reputation for
making his team really difficult to beat and cultivated
a personality that saw him mix an element of being
a task master with a fun and loving side
that gave you the impression that he has a real
hold over his players.
So far though, it hasn’t quite worked out at Milan
that way and he is struggling to get a real consistent
tune out of his team which has seen them slide down
the table and drop eight points away from
their target of the top four.
This weekend sees them play host to Como
who will be a tricky proposition.
Cesc Fabregas’ team probably enjoyed the most successful
January transfer window with players such as
Maxime Cacqueret and Assane Diao joining
the club and immediately hitting the ground running.
Whilst they still haven’t quite assured safety,
things are looking far more comfortable
than they were back in the Autumn and early Winter.
Milan being the hosts gives them the tag as slight favourites.
Como’s slightly higher confidence might make
them believe that they can cause a surprise.
Don’t be too surprised if they do.
One thing for certain is that this one could well be
decided by a single goal.

Roma vs Cagliari
Roma hosting Cagliari could well prove to be
something of an emotional affair.
Current legendary Roma boss Claudio Ranieri will find
his loyalties slightly divided in this one.
Now well into his third spell of coaching his boyhood
club and excelling massively,
Don Claudio welcomes one of his many former clubs
but this one in particular holds a special place in his heart.
After beginning his managerial career successfully in
the lower reaches of the Italian football pyramid in
the late 1980s, Ranieri was spotted by Cagliari and
hired as their coach.
In three years at the helm, he lifted them from the third
tier all the way up to Serie A and was treated
as a king by the club’s faithful.
His success proved to be the launching pad for
his managerial career which saw him go onto manage
the likes of Napoli, Valencia, Atletico Madrid,
Chelsea and Leicester to their insane shock Premier League
title win in 2016.
After the highs of his spell with Leicester,
Ranieri has bounced around jobs
but then snatched at the chance to return to Cagliari in 2023.
It proved to be an excellent move as he ended up
taking them back up to Serie A and keeping
them there at the end of last season despite having to
deal with having the league’s lowest budget.
He officially retired this past summer and was given
a hero’s send off by the Sardinian club but
that retirement was only short lived as he couldn’t
resist the pull of the club he supported as a man and boy.
It is rare to see a full stadium adore one coach
but that will certainly be the case this weekend at the Olimpico.
He won’t enjoy doing it but expect Ranieri to inspire
his team to a comfortable win to stretch
their unbeaten league run to thirteen matches.

Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna are continuing
their attempts to establish themselves as a side
that belongs at the top of the table.
After surprising the rest of the league last year by finishing
in the Champions League places and qualifying for
Europe’s premier knockout competition,
the club saw some of its key assets poached
but the appointment of Italiano and some shrewd
recruitment has seen the team deal exceptionally
well with the change and maintain their challenge at
the top end of the league table.
Their win away at Verona last weekend demonstrated
their ability to edge tight games and a vital three points
means they sit quite comfortably in sixth place,
four points above Roma
who sit just below them and within two points of Juventus in fourth.
It will be interesting for the team and their coach to
measure themselves against a team who find
themselves in a similar position.
Marco Baroni has had a very similar effect on his Lazio
side as the one had by Italiano on Bologna in
the sense that he has adapted the team to his style quickly.
Much like Italiano, Baroni has to contend with key departures
from his side and has dealt with that adversity admirably
and has managed to keep his team well in
the hunt for a Champions League place.
This game is perhaps the game that promises
the most enjoyment after Inter vs Atalanta this weekend
and sees two tactically excellent coaches face off.
A win for either side will do wonders for their respective
confidences and bids to finish in the top four.
A high scoring draw appears a likely result.

Monza vs Parma
Despite giving an excellent account of themselves
last weekend away at the league leaders, Monza lost yet again.
The league’s bottom side ended up with a surprise 2-0 lead
during the first half thanks to goals from wing-back
Samuele Birindelli and ex-Inter man
Keita Balde but were soon pegged back.
They fought hard and bravely but ended up seeing
the scoreline reversed and had to make the short journey
back to the Brianteo empty handed.
It looks more and more likely that with each passing
week that Monza will be relegated.
Their season has never got going at any point.
The loss of their coach and star player in the summer meant
that they were heading into the season weaker and
the appointment of Alessandro Nesta has ended up
being a bizarre one that has brought them zero success.
Having guided them to just one win by December,
he was fired but then reinstated a mere eight league games
later as his replacement Salvatore Bocchetti couldn’t do any better.
Six league games into his second spell and
he’s not managed to win a single one of them.
Losing Daniel Maldini and Warren Bondo in
the January window was costly too.
Parma if they are to escape the same likely fate of Monza
must start winning and this trip to the league’s
bottom side represents an opportunity to do just that.
Christian Chivu’s recent appointment as manager has lifted

Torino are perhaps the only team in Serie A
at the moment that is guaranteed to be finishing in mid-table.
They sit a whopping 15 points off the European places and
twelve clear of the drop meaning that it
would take something of a miracle for them to gain
anything other than a solid finish slap bang in
the middle of the pack.
Fans of La Granata are accustomed to such solidity
but you could argue that they’ve taken
a slight step back this year.
In the previous three years under Ivan Juric,
they built themselves up from being strugglers
at the bottom end to being a side
that were on the cusp of Europe.
Juric left this past summer upon the expiration of
his contract as he felt that a lack of investment meant
he couldn’t take the team further and perhaps he was right.
His replacement Paolo Vanoli hasn’t been able to
take them on any further and at times has had to go
back to basics to grind out results so entertainment
has been at a minimum.
Without Duvan Zapata, who the team lost to injury
early in the campaign
it was always going to be tough though.
If they are to end the season with some positivity,
they need to make sure they’re taking points off
of teams like struggling Empoli.
The form of Empoli has completely nosedived since
the turn of the year and it has seen them drop from
lower mid table to two points adrift in 18th.
If things don’t change, they are going to be following
Venezia and Monza down to Serie B
which undos some of the hard work done over
the last three years in establishing the team in Serie A.
A trip to Torino isn’t one that is likely to be fruitful for them.

Patrick Vieira’s Genoa are managing to maintain
their ability of being hard to beat.
Since the Frenchman arrived at Il Grifone back in October,
the team has managed to pull itself away from
any fears of relegation and establish themselves
in the comforts of mid-table that they enjoyed last season.
It is no secret that the team has found this year
a little tougher as the departures of Mateo Retegui and
Albert Gudmundsson left two big holes in the side.
Whilst Andrea Pinamonti has filled in admirably,
the likes of Vitinha and Junior Messias have flattered to
deceive and spent a number of weeks on the injury table.
This has meant that coach Vieira has had to find a way to
maximise his team’s talents and by building from
the back and through midfield he has made
them compact and difficult to break down.
Even in games such as last weekend’s draw at Cagliari
where the team wasn’t at its best,
they are finding ways to pick up points.
Their upcoming opponents Lecce have aspirations to
be doing just that but they cannot grind out any
kind of results at the moment.
Three defeats on the spin and now no wins in five
has left the team just three points above the relegation
zone and fans are beginning to panic.
Lecce have aspirations to push themselves up
the Serie A table and truly establish themselves
as a permanent fixture in the top division.
Relegation is not part of their remit and if
their recent form cannot be corrected, the club’s hierarchy
may begin to lose patience with coach Marco Giampaolo.

It has become a rarity in recent years for fans of
Udinese to actually be enjoying watching their team.
For over a decade, the Friulian outfit have undergone
multiple managerial changes, an influx of players and
a number of low mid-table finishes.
It is fair to say that they have become perhaps
the most dull and uninspiring club in Serie A during
that time period but this year has broken that period of mediocrity.
Whilst they aren’t quite hitting the heights of Bologna,
they aren’t a million miles away from Europe and
are in absolutely no danger of falling into a relegation battle.
Their current form is also very good with three wins in
their last five leaving them targeting a top ten finish.
ne thing that they have been managing to do well is
picking up wins against teams below them and
this weekend’s tie against Verona gives them an opportunity
to do just that again.
Verona have lost the joint most amount of matches in
Serie A this season, level on 18 defeats with bottom side Monza,
but what is keeping them out of the relegation zone is
the fact that they have been able to turn draws into narrow victories.
Their eight league triumphs isn’t bettered by anyone in
the bottom half and the last time
they found themselves travelling away from home against
a team they were expected to lose against they came out victors.
That win though, a win over Fiorentina no less,
is the only one that they’ve managed in their last five
and it will take another herculean effort from
Paolo Zanetti and his men if they are to do the same again.
Udinese should have enough about them to
negotiate the threat of Verona.
Their leading marksman Lorenzo Lucca could well be
in the goals again in this one as he continues to
have his breakout Serie A season.
