Barcelona vs Osasuna
Despite protests from both teams, Barcelona’s game
against Osasuna has been rescheduled to take place on Thursday night,
less than 48 hours after some players
have been involved in World Cup qualifying matches.
That’s far from ideal for either coach in terms of preparation
for this game, with some players unable to take any
real part in their usual pre-game routines due to
international commitments.
Osasuna defender Enzo Boyomo was part of the Cameroon
squad that took on Libya on Tuesday in a World Cup
qualifier in Africa, but it’s certainly Barcelona
who have been hit harder by the timing of this game.
Key man Raphinha started for Brazil in Argentina,
in a game that kicked off in the early hours of Wednesday
morning Spanish time.
It’d be a huge surprise if he was to also start on
Thursday night on a different continent at the Estadi Olimpic,
while Ronald Araujo has also had to travel all
the way back from a game in Bolivia on Tuesday evening,
although he didn’t get off the bench for Uruguay.
Hansi Flick could also consider resting top scorer
Robert Lewandowski following his international
commitments with Poland which concluded on Monday.
While the likes of Pedri, Lamine Yamal,
Frenkie de Jong and Jules Kounde have had a bit
more time off following their Nations League matches,
it’s hard to see any way that Barca will be in peak
condition for a match they didn’t really want to play.
With the likes of Pedri and Yamal expected to start,
they should still have enough quality on the pitch to
have the better of the game,
but they may just find Osasuna a tough side to break down,
with the visitors likely to switch to a back five.
We saw Rayo Vallecano and Alaves defend well and
frustrate Barca at the Estadi Olimpic in February,
both only going down to 1-0 defeats.
A deep-lying approach seems to be the blueprint for
visiting sides to a ground that has not been
a fortress for Barcelona this term,
with three LaLiga teams winning here at the end of 2024.
They are unbeaten since the turn of the year though,
and on a brighter note for the hosts heading into this game,
Osasuna are missing their lively
winger Bryan Zaragoza to a fresh injury.
He has given Barca real trouble in the past,
with three goals and an assist in his two previous
matches against the Catalan giants.
Without Zaragoza, Osasuna won’t pose anywhere near
as much threat on the counter-attack,
but they should be competitive enough to at least keep
the score down in this game given Barca aren’t likely to
be at their best so soon after the international break.
