Inter vs Udinese
Inter host Udinese at San Siro on Sunday night after
finally being able to get a rest for some of
their rather tired players and start their battle against
time to try and get more of their players back to fitness.
The Nerazzuri are well and truly in the hunt for
the Scudetto and are aiming to maintain their momentum
that was further boosted by their excellent win
over Atalanta prior to the break.
After capitalising on some rather lacklustre defending
and a ludicrous red card for La Dea midfielder Ederson,
Inzaghi’s men all but pulled clear of third spot and
took advantage of Napoli drawing yet again to move
three points clear in top spot.
However,
as mentioned, the team’s injury list is looking rather large
at present, particularly in the wingback positions.
Federico Dimarco, Matteo Darmian, and Nicola Zalewski have
all been sidelined due to injuries and
it now appears that Denzel Dumfries could be a doubt
after he hobbled off against Atalanta.
These absences aren’t all though as there are
also doubts over Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram
who both had to skip international duty.
A home match against Udinese represents an opportunity to
rotate and hopefully still pick up points.
Kosta Runjaic’s Friulians are far from pushovers though and
are enjoying their best season in a
while and they’ll definitely be keen to put an impressive
performance on to show their improvement.
They have encountered a mixed run of results of late,
with recent performances showing real inconsistency.
Their latest league outing resulted in a 1-0 defeat at
home to Verona which shocked the rest of Serie A as
it was a match that they’d have expected to win.
They’ll travel to San Siro with a lot of hope and
given that not many will expect them to win
it you could even argue that they’ve nothing really to lose.
This game is undoubtedly bigger for Inter as
they want to try and maintain their lead at the top.
Can Inzaghi gather his wounded squad and
manage to juggle putting out a side that is strong
enough to win the game but allows some of
his tired and injured players a rest?
They should just be able to do enough to get a narrow win.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli host Milan this weekend in
a crucial Serie A matchup that could significantly influence

Milan will pose a tricky test for the Neapolitans

For all their trials and tribulations so far this season,
Sergio Conceiçao’s team are in fact just four points off
Lazio in sixth and a further two points back from
the top four and with back to back wins in their last two games
before the break, they arrive with a little confidence behind them.
When the two met earlier in the season
it was goals from Romelu Lukaku and the aforementioned
Kvaratskhelia that allowed Conte’s team to pick up
three vital points but it almost seems as if that team
looks as if it is incapable of repeating such a ruthless
professional performance at present.
Milan will arrive with that result in their mind and
given the fact that they’ve been able to beat Inter twice
already this season shows
that they can perform very well on their day.
In all likelihood, this looks as if it could be a game
that produces yet another draw for Napoli.
They must hope Inter struggle to battle their fatigue and
injuries in their match to avoid a gap being opened up
in front of them.

Juventus vs Genoa
A potentially very different Juventus side will host
Patrick Vieira’s Genoa at Allianz in Saturday’s tea time kick off.
It is safe to say that it’s been a rather hectic international
break for The Old Lady as this match becomes
a little more pivotal following the rather significant
decision to make a managerial change whilst
the team jetted off around the globe in all directions to
play for their national sides.
It all seemed to happen rather fast but it was confirmed
on Sunday that head coach Thiago Motta had been
fired less than nine months into his reign in charge due to
a series of disappointing results,
including a 4-0 defeat to Atalanta and a 3-0 loss to Fiorentina.
The team’s performance has been marked by an excessive
number of drawn matches,
leading to their current fifth-place position in the league,
12 points behind leaders Inter Milan,
a position that the club’s hierarchy felt wasn’t
befitting of the money spent on the team and
ran the risk of them not qualifying for the Champions League
for next season which would result in significant lost revenue.
In the interim,
former Bianconeri midfielder Igor Tudor has been appointed
as head coach until the end of the season in
the hope that he can ignite the side in a similar way to
how he coached Lazio to a strong finish to last
year’s campaign after replacing Maurizio Sarri.
Genoa arrive in Turin with a reputation for being
difficult to beat though and will certainly try and
spoil Tudor’s homecoming by being
resolute and hard to score past.
However,
given Juventus’ stronger squad and home advantage,
they are favourites and you can bet the stadium
will be a little louder now that they have a former
favourite in charge of their team.
We should see a famous ‘new manager bounce’ take place here.

Fiorentina vs Atalanta
Perhaps the next biggest game in Serie A this weekend is
the game between Fiorentina and Atalanta as it sees two young,
vibrant and exciting attacking sides go head
to head in a battle to try and force each side’s respective
bids for success.
For the hosts, this match represents a real opportunity to
push themselves back into contention for
the top four after a fall away in recent months.
Just two wins in their last six Serie A matches has seen
Rafaelle Palladino’s team fall away from their dizzy
heights of early season but a 3-0 thumping of a rather
sorry looking Juventus which ultimately turned out to
be Thiago Motta’s last game could well give them some confidence.
With their star striker Moise Kean back in the goals too
after a rather impressive brace against Germany in
an otherwise tough international break for Italy,
expect him to be a real threat in front of the Atalanta goal.
Atalanta come into this one in a rather tricky position.
Their loss last time out at home to Inter,
albeit not completely disastrous,
does now put them well and truly on the back foot in the
race for the title.
The aftermath of the game has perhaps been
the most worrying part for La Dea as reality as set in
that they will be without midfield lynchpin
Ederson for this one following his red card for sarcastically
applauding the referee and
their coach Gian Piero Gasperini has also been speaking
rather cryptically about his future in interviews with
the press leading to suggestions that he has all
but decided that he won’t be in charge next season.
Given the fact that the hosts seem to be coming into
it with more confidence, expect them to pick up a result.
This will be a fun watch as neither side is scared of attacking.

Roma continue their charge up the Serie A table under
Claudio Ranieri and it’s safe to say that fans of the Giallorossi
are feeling far more positive about life after
what was a truly worrying beginning to the campaign.
Despite their recent Europa League defeat to Atletico Bilbao,
it’s been all happy smiles around Trigoria as
the side from the eternal city
continue to thrive under one of their own.
There is always something special about a side coached
by a man who supported them as you can really
feel the connection between the manager and
the fans and that is something that the much maligned
owners of the club are desperately trying to keep alive.
Coach Claudio Ranieri came to the rescue following
two managers in two months to start the season and
he’s done so well that there’s even talk of
that season long contract extending into next year.
The wily old tactician happily retired at the end of last season
but did state that if his beloved Roma needed
him then he would help out.
He has led them on a thirteen match unbeaten run in
Serie A that dates back to December and at
the time of writing they sit just four points off the top
four places, a position that they could have
only dreamed of months ago.
In their way this weekend are a struggling Lecce side
desperate for a result.
Marco Giampaolo’s team sit just three points and
two places above the relegation zone and come into
this one off the back of four straight defeats.
Given that they’re the home side
they will have the majority of the support in the stadium
but it’s very hard to see Roma being beaten at the moment.
Much like they have done of late, expect them to keep
a clean sheet and win by a narrow yet comfortable margin.
Prediction: Lecce 0-2 Roma

Lazio vs Torino
Much like Inter, Lazio definitely needed the international break.
A 5-0 thumping at the hands of Bologna in
their last match before the break showcased just
how worn out Marco Baroni’s team are.
The former Lecce and Verona coach held his hands up to
the club’s ultras after the match and
was keen to stress that the result should be put on
his shoulders which was a gracious move.
An action like that is perhaps what has made the bond
between players and manager so strong this season
as it can be safely said that Baroni has managed to make
Lazio greater than the sum of its parts.
He inherited a side abandoned by Igor Tudor and
losing pillars of the changing room in players such as Luis Alberto,
Felipe Anderson and Ciro Immobile
who had dedicated their best years of service to the Biancocelesti
in recent years.
It was therefore a tough ask to pull together a young side o
n short notice and ask them to compete in the
Europa League as well.
So far it has gone well with the team even pushing
into the title picture at points this year
but as the season has gone on they’ve started to
be sapped of energy.
The international break came at a really good time for
them and should have allowed them to regroup.
Torino are their visitors this weekend and
it’s safe to say
that they’re really working on making themselves hard to beat.
Paolo Vanoli’s side are building a reputation for
becoming very miserly and three wins in their last four has
them targeting a top ten finish.
If Lazio have made the most of their rest they should
edge this but expect Torino to be tricky customers.
A narrow win is the best Lazio can hope for against
a mean Granata back line.

Venezia vs Bologna
Following their hammering of Lazio before the break,
it’s been hard to read any media in Italy
that hasn’t been praising Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna side.
Last season’s heroics seemed an almost impossible job to
repeat after a change in coach and a couple of key departures
but it actually has potential to be an even better campaign.
Five league wins out of six and just one league loss in
2025 has seen the side climb up to fourth spot
which is no mean feat when you see the size and
budgets and even squad depth of some of the teams around them.
They sit higher than teams such as Juventus,
Lazio, Milan and Roma which in normal circumstances
would indicate you’d be one of the best sides in
the league in that case and the Rossoblu certainly are
at the time of writing.
Whilst the departed Thiago Motta lost his job last weekend,
his successor Vincenzo Italiano has been earning his flowers.
A sensational job at Spezia was backed up by getting
Fiorentina to back to back Europa Conference League
finals but he has the potential to go even better
at his current employers.
In-form winger Riccardo Orsolini was keen to heap praise on
his manager and even suggested
that the players are far happier than they were last season.
It would just be so typical
that when things are going so well that they find themselves
coming unstuck against Venezia though and
that’s why they’ll have to stay on high alert this weekend.
Despite the fact that they’re looking more and
more likely to go down with each passing game,
Eusebio Di Francesco’s team aren’t going down without a fight.
They’ve managed to shut out Atalanta, Napoli and
Lazio in recent weeks but draws aren’t good enough for
them at this stage really.
Despite this one taking place at their rather compact
and quite intimidating ground,
it’s hard to see them getting anything more than a point.
They do possess the firepower to turn draws into wins
and with Bologna being in such impressive form,
they’ll do well to get another shut out.

Cagliari vs Monza
Despite only winning one of their last eight Serie A matches,
Davide Nicola’s Cagliari can look downwards towards
the relegation places knowing that they have a decent cushion.
Four points separates the Sardinian outfit from trouble
below and a win over bottom of the league Monza
could move them seven points clear of the relegation zone
with eight matches remaining.
Whilst not being mathematically safe even at that point,
it would be highly unlikely to see the team fall into
Serie B even if they lost all of their matches following it.
To stay up was Nicola’s remit at the start of the season and
if he can finish the job and carry through with
that then he’s had a successful season with one of
the teams in the league with the lowest budget.
Incidentally,
their upcoming opponents Monza have had a far bigger
budget in recent years but find themselves rooted to
the bottom of Serie A and have endured a truly
horrible campaign so far.
It would take something of a minor miracle to save
the side from the Brianteo Stadium as
they sit ten points from safety and have won just once since October.
The return of Alessandro Nesta to the dugout for
a second spell this season has done absolutely nothing to
rescue the side’s woes and the sales of Daniel Maldini,
Milan Djuric and Warren Bondo in January simply
added cash to the club’s bank account as
no replacements of adequate quality have been brought in
to replace them.
Monza’s nightmare season looks set to continue here
as Cagliari know a win puts them within touching
distance of likely survival.
Not to mention Monza have only picked up
seven points on the road all season.

Verona vs Parma
Another battle at the bottom sees Verona take on
Parma and this one has a similar ring to it as
the game between Cagliari and Monza.
Verona find themselves in a very similar position to
Cagliari in the sense that a win
here is a gigantic leap towards safety.
Logically this game is actually even more of an opportunity
for Verona than Cagliari’s is for them as
the side from the Bentegodi know
that a win could move them a massive ten points
clear of the drop with eight games to play.
That would all but see them home and dry in terms of safety
which was definitely coach Paolo Zanetti’s primary target
before a ball was kicked at the start of the season.
At one stage though he looked as if he may lose
his job as back in early Autumn the team were on
the receiving end of some real hammerings and
languishing in the drop zone.
Whilst the occasional hammering is still an issue,
Verona have the league record for the least amount of draws.
They win when they don’t lose which has enabled
them to pull clear of trouble and despite boasting
the worst defence in the league by quite a distance they sit 14th.
Parma would be delighted with 14th as
they find themselves still wrestling with trouble.
New coach Christian Chivu has one win,
two draws and a narrow defeat away to Udinese in
his four games in charge so far
which has been a solid return but with the likes of Inter,
Juventus and Lazio on the horizon he needs to get a win in this one.
Verona will be slight favourites given their home advantage
and they’ll be confident of a win knowing
that it can bring real reward.
The fact they can’t defend though remains an Achilles
heel for the team meaning
that Parma will likely score at least once.
A high scoring draw is something that both teams
will probably accept.

Como vs Empoli
Things are looking far rosier for Como than
they did at one point earlier in the season.
The well backed project looked like it could be in
trouble early on as the team failed to put
a consistent run together and lingered dangerously
around the relegation places.
The January window came at just the right time for
coach Cesc Fabregas and his deep pockets were
used to help build a side capable of pulling away from trouble.
The likes of Maxime Cacqueret and Assane Diao are
players that represent not just short term
but long term investments and they’ve both managed to
hit the ground running.
The latter has scored five in 11 since joining,
including a winner against Napoli.
Narrow defeats against Roma and Milan before
the break were hugely frustrating and
it was also sad to see Dele Alli’s debut end abruptly due to
a late red card but in all honesty Fabregas’s priority
must be to take points off teams that are below
them as a midtable finish is perhaps
the summit of their ambitions for this season.
Empoli are one of those sides and they find
themselves in a whole world of trouble.
They have lost eleven of their last fourteen matches
and have failed to win since a 4-1 win at
Verona back in early December.
As a result,
Roberto D’Aversa, who is still somehow clinging to
his job as manager, has a serious job on
his hands as he now finds his team occupying
the last relegation place, three points from safety.
For all his promising work with the younger talents
at his disposal that saw his team make a good start,
he has now stumbled on
a losing formula that he cannot seem to fix.
His team look seriously low on confidence and
are nosediving towards a likely relegation.
If they lose this one, which they most likely will,
he surely must be relieved of his duties.
I wonder if they’ve still got Davide Nicola’s number?
