Inter continue their quest for glory on all fronts
as they return to San Siro to face Cagliari this weekend.
A tiring and truly gruelling schedule continues for
the Nerazzurri as they continue on their quest for glory in all fronts.
This midweek saw them back in Champions League action
where they found themselves tasked with taking on
the behemoth that is Bayern Munich away at the Allianz Arena.
In a repeat match of the 2010 Champions League final,
Inter fought remarkably and managed to take a 2-1
lead in the tie to take back to Italy with them ahead of the second leg.
The result is even more impressive when you factor in
that they had to play a league game away at Parma last weekend
which was a potential banana skin given that Parma are
fighting for their lives to stay in Serie A and then also
add in the fact that they had to play nearest rivals Milan
for the fourth time so far this season in the Coppa Italia semi-final too.
To avoid defeat across all three has been mighty impressive
especially when you factor in some of the fatigue and
injuries that are currently plaguing the squad.
A home tie against lowly Cagliari represents a chance for
Simone Inzaghi to once again rotate his team.
The likes of Medhi Taremi, Marko Arnautovic and
Joaquin Correa could once again come into contention for
the front positions and the team will be also hoping to
welcome back Polish wingback Nicola Zalewski into the fold
for a full ninety minutes after a recent injury has
halted his start to life in the colours of blue and black.
Federico Dimarco remains a doubt
after he missed the Bayern game.
Cagliari caused a nuisance on their visit here last year
by dragging themselves back into a game
that they were losing and capitalised on
a similarly tired Inter to grab a point.
They could do just the same again here but it will
have to be a near identically
perfect performance from Nicola’s men.
Inter should have enough regardless of their needs to rotate
and to give some of their star men a rest so
that they are ready to go again for the second
leg at home to Bayern this coming week.

Lazio vs Roma
It is safe to say that both of the main clubs from Rome
have had very interesting seasons to date.
Lazio,
who are the home side in this derby,
have largely enjoyed life under Marco Baroni.
With Igor Tudor surprisingly walking out on the club in
the summer after a largely successful stint as interim
coach at the end of last year,
club president Claudio Lotito opted to bring in
then Verona boss Baroni as his replacement.
A coach who has spent the large part of his time in
football managing in the second tier didn’t
exactly inspire much optimism amongst supporters and
given that they lost a number of experienced
players such as Ciro Immobile,
Felipe Anderson and Luis Alberto,
many predicted them to fall down towards midtable.
However, that hasn’t been the case and Baroni has
managed to keep his side firmly in the mix for Europe all
whilst keeping them in the Europa League too.
Whilst they have stumbled a little in recent weeks,
they remain in sixth place, just two points off
the Champions League places.
Their bitter rivals Roma at one point looked as
if they might have to just focus on staying in
the league which is an absolute disaster for a club of their size.
The decision to spend big in the summer and invest
heavily in the squad brought about a rise in
expectation and a belief
that the team could comfortably finish top four.
However, things didn’t gel in the early stages of the season
and the team instead found itself on coach
number three by the international break in early November.
In came Claudio Ranieri and he has turned
the season around completely.
The team now find themselves breathing down the
necks of their closest rivals and a win here could
see them go above Baroni’s men.
Claudio Ranieri’s record in the Rome derby is incredible.
He’s never lost and it’s very hard to imagine him
losing this one as his side hasn’t lost in the league
this calendar year and he got maximum points in
this fixture early in the season.
A high scoring draw would produce a really entertaining affair.

Atalanta vs Bologna
One season we are going to be lucky enough to see
Atalanta put in a consistent performance across
every game in a league season.
When at their best,
they are simply scintillating and that was shown consistently up
until the beginning of 2025.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s team were absolutely flying prior to
a ridiculous run of games in winter
where they simply blew the opposition away.
Sadly for them, as usual, they have burned too brightly
and a series of three straight defeats in league
action has meant that it would take a minor miracle for
them to win the league and now it
has become all about simply just trying to make the top four.
There is Joe a feeling of sadness and pure frustration
about the club at the moment as everyone connected
with the club felt
that they could have done the unthinkable and had
a real go at winning the league this year.
Next year is already being talked about now and
it looks as if they may have to do it without Gasperini
who keeps flirting with the idea of leaving in
interviews across the media.
Their upcoming opponents Bologna are riding
the crest of a wave and are in a much better place.
Their coach Vincenzo Italiano is finally beginning to get
well deserved praise for managing to galvanise
a group of players who were written off at the start of the season.
Many argued that last season’s run to
the Champions League places was a fluke and
that with the loss of manager Thiago Motta and
a number of their star names that the team would
struggle to maintain that level of performance.
Those people have been proven very wrong though and
despite a rather disappointing
Champions League campaign and a jittery start in the league,
they’ve managed to be coached into a team
that equally can inspire but also be resolute.
A run of six wins in their last eight Serie A games
has seen the team rise up to fourth in the league and
in Dan Ndoye and Riccardo Orsolini,
they boast two of the league’s most in form players.
Whilst they boast an advantage in terms of form,
asking them to win in Bergamo is a tall ask.
A scoring draw would be a likely result between
the two as Atalanta are desperate to ensure
they don’t begin to fall out of
the Champions League places altogether.

Napoli vs Empoli
Last weekend was a huge missed opportunity for
Antonio Conte’s Napoli.
Whilst it would have been unrealistic to expect
them to pick up an easy three points away to an
in-form Bologna, a win could have brought them to
within a point of leaders Inter.
With Inter stumbling to a 2-2 draw against lowly Parma,
Napoli will be kicking themselves.
A win for the Nerazzurri in the Champions League in
midweek means that their chances of progressing
the tournament are increased which adds to
their already demanding schedule.
Napoli must make use of this as they have a huge
advantage in that they only place once a week
now until the end of the season.
They must start to wrestle back the momentum
that they built coming into this calendar year and
start turning draws into wins.
Since early February, they’ve managed to pick up
just two league wins.
They have only lost once, away to Cesc Fabregas’ Como
but it’s the six draws in that time that has killed them.
They have had to face Inter, Lazio, Fiorentina,
Roma and Milan in this period,
which makes their run in a little easier,
but draws against Udinese and Venezia represent
missed opportunities.
A game at home to possibly the most out of
form team in Europe over the last three months represents
a real opportunity to get back on track.
Roberto D’Aversa continues to remarkably keep
hold of his job as Empoli boss despite overseeing
a complete nosedive in form
that has seen the team drop from lower mid-table
into the relegation zone.
Whilst they do sit just two points away from safety
and there is hope that they can preserve
their Serie A status, their drop off has been alarming to the point
where it reads appallingly on paper.
Eleven defeats and five draws since their last win away
at Verona in early December is a horrifying run
that spells real relegation form.
Whilst they did win this fixture last season,
there’s a massive likelihood that they could end up
on the receiving end of a battering this time.
This should be a comfortable win for Napoli.

Juventus vs Lecce
Juventus have picked up four points from their first
two games under interim boss Igor Tudor.
The Croatian has returned to management to help out
the club he played for in the hope
that he can manage to steer the underachievers into
a Champions League spot.
The importance of the club reaching the top four cannot
be understated.
The financial situation of the Bianconeri is on a knife
edge and reliance on the funding
that the Champions League brings in has become
a crutch now as overspending on players like
Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years has seen the club
now having to wrestle to balance the books now
that they are in a far more transitional era.
The Thiago Motta experiment never really got going
and despite him making the team hard to beat,
they simply weren’t winning enough matches and
their rather bleak performances saw the fans began to
revolt against the team.
The club’s hierarchy jumped at the first chance
they could to remove Motta as they weren’t willing to
leave anything to chance.
Tudor must now pick up the pieces and he will no doubt
be motivated by the idea of helping his former club
but also he will have a slight eye on trying to convince
the club he could be a long term option too
as there’s yet to be a candidate for the permanent job
emerge as a clear favourite.
A run of just one win in eleven for Lecce leaves them in
real trouble and teetering just a place and two points
above the drop zone.
Marco Giampaolo’s team have to start winning
if they are to avoid the drop into the second tier.
Whisky that need is becoming almost a desperation,
there’s little to no chance of them winning this one.
Juventus should simply be too strong for them.

Rafaelle Palladino’s Fiorentina look as
if they are finally beginning to resurrect themselves from
a rather disappointing run that has seen them fall out of the top six.
Whilst it would have been unrealistic to see the team
maintain their ridiculously brilliant run of form prior to Christmas,
a run of four league defeats in five games prior to
the recent international break saw the team slide down
into eighth place.
The race for Europe is always an intriguing one but
this year it has been downright bonkers.
Nine teams this year are competing to finish in the top
six and at one stage it looked as if any one of those
could have reached the top four even let alone the six.
Palladino’s men might just be coming good at the right time though.
They’ve managed to pass through into
the next round of the Conference League as
they bid to go one further and lift the trophy after
being beaten finalists in the past two years.
Two wins and a creditable draw in their last three league games
against Juventus, Atalanta and Milan respectively has
been welcomed and shown just how good
La Viola can be on their day.
They welcome a Parma side to the Artemio Franchi
this weekend that have plenty to play for themselves.
Christian Chivu has added a certain steeliness to
a team desperate to preserve their Serie A status.
Their draw last time out against Inter saw them pick up
a vital point and move three points
clear of the relegation zone.
The result also proved that they can battle with the best.
They will need to show all of that resolve and more
if they are to produce a similar end result here though and
given that Fiorentina look like
they’re clicking back into top gear, it’s going to be a tough ask.
Fiorentina should have enough about them to win
this even if they might have to work for it.

Serie A’s bottom two face off in a match that sees Monza
travel to the lagoon to take on Venezia in
a game where neither side will be wanting to give
an inch in the bid for unlikely survival.
Whilst the survival race hots up in Serie A, it is probably too
little too late for either Venezia or Monza to
have even a slight chance of staying up.
Both teams have endured a season to forget.
Venezia didn’t have an ideal pre-season with
their promotion winning coach Paolo Vanoli walking out
on them to join Torino and his replacement
Eusebio Di Francesco has lost the magic touch
that he once had when in charge of Sassuolo and
then briefly with Roma.
They then inexplicably sold their talismanic captain
Joel Pohjanpalo to Palermo in January leaving them
without a real goalscorer and as a result
they have struggled to score goals.
They have been much more resolute at the back in
terms of shutting out teams but picking up just
a measly point at best from games is stopping
them clawing back points on the failing sides above them.
Whilst Venezia’s hopes of survival are slim,
Monza’s are nigh on microscopic.
They could be mathematically relegated from Serie A
in the next fortnight which is a real loss to
the league as their infectious ambition powered by
the late Silvio Berlusconi has been a welcomed
addition to Serie A in recent years.
Expect the battle of the league’s worst
two to be a low scoring affair.
A draw seems likely as both struggle to break down
teams and are prone to a score draw.
Prediction: Venezia 1-1 Monza

Como welcome Torino to the Sinigaglia with the slim
hope of trying to catch up La Granata in the table.
Cesc Fabregas’ team have arrived in Serie A intent on
making things very clear
that they are not there just to make up the numbers.
Their deep pockets have allowed them to spend
their way out of a troubled start to the season
that saw them flirt with the relegation battle below them at times.
January additions such as Assane Diao and
Maxime Cacqueret have added quality to the side and
brought about an upturn in form.
The club’s owners seem content that Fabregas has
managed to establish the team in the league
but rumour has it he will be under much more pressure
next year as he is expected to be given a healthy
transfer budget in the hopes
that he can get the team into Europe next year.
Torino owner Umberto Cairo is far more miserly and
his tight purse strings mean that his La Granata team
are destined to repeat their solid mid-table
finishes year on year without quite having enough
about them to battle to the top half.
When Ivan Juric left last summer, many agreed that it
was the right move as he had earned the opportunity to
coach a European side,
something that he claimed Torino couldn’t become
due to a lack of spending.
Paolo Vanoli has replaced Juric, who has since gone on
to have nightmare spells at Roma and Southampton,
and the former Venezia coach has managed to carry out
Cairo’s wishes of solidity to a tee.
Expect him to leave the Sinigaglia with a hard earned
point in a low scoring affair.

Verona vs Genoa
It cannot be understated just how critical it is
that Verona stay in Serie A year on year.
The club relies on money from the top league to keep
going and its ability to bring on players and
then sell them on for profit only works if they are in the top flight.
With their nearest rivals and constant terrors Chievo
now out of sight for at least a very long while,
the Bentegodi Stadium is only getting treated to Serie A
football by one of the Veronese clubs and
it is looking more and more tired by the week.
Paolo Zanetti has one of the toughest jobs in
Serie A to keep his team in the league
when he is finding himself fighting against teams
with better facilities and bigger budgets.
He looked as if at one stage he may be sacked due to
his team’s leaky defence but he has since found
a way to make his team more resolute and
their plucky single goal margin wins has meant
that they have been able to steal a march on the sides around them.
A win here over Genoa will all but confirm safety for
them but that won’t come easy.
Whilst Genoa have very little to play for given
their relative mid table safety,
they have built a strong and resolute identity of being
tough to beat under Patrick Vieira.
This one has the idea of a close run affair written all over it.
Verona are good at edging close games but Genoa will
make it very difficult as they have done for every side
that they’ve faced since Vieira’s arrival.
A low scoring draw is a sensible prediction.

Nothing like a great bit of trivia to start off a preview
between two teams who are frighteningly inconsistent at
times this year which has left both sets of fans feeling
a sense of what if.
Fans of Udinese are a little less frustrated as
their expectations aren’t quite as lofty.
Whilst more performances of them at their best could’ve
seen them threaten the hectic race for the European places,
The Zebras are pleased
that they aren’t battling at the wrong end of the table
like they have been constantly over recent years.
Milan can’t quite take the same positives from
their campaign which has been largely doomed from the off.
Whilst the summer saw heavy investment in
the playing staff, Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca wasn’t
the popular choice to help lead them.
He barely had enough time to unpack his bags
before he was sent packing and although his replacement
Sergio Conceicao won the Supercoppa in
his first two matches as coach, he’s struggled for consistency.
This has put his team on the backseat in the race for
Europe and this game is a must win
if they are to continue pushing up the table rather than
accepting mid-table mediocrity.
They did manage to reverse a two goal deficit
last weekend to pick up a point against Fiorentina and
will need to show a similar resolve this weekend
if they are to have any chance of bridging the gap
between themselves and the top end of the league.
A narrow win away in Friuli isn’t a straightforward
task but they’re going to have to do it
if they want any chance of making it to Europe next season.
