Villarreal vs Espanyol
Espanyol’s revival has been
one of the most surprising things
about LaLiga so far in 2025.
They looked in real trouble
at the midway point in the campaign,
but with even their away form picking up,
they look to be on course for safety now.
Their current tally of 39 points
may even be enough to stay up,
but they are playing well enough to compete
in this match and potentially
add to their tally on Sunday at the Ceramica.
Continuity has been the key ingredient
in their revival.
Manolo Gonzalez has settled on
nine or 10 players that he really believes in,
with the only real rotation
taking place on the right flank
where youngsters Antoniu Roca and Jofre Carreras
have swapped places in recent weeks.
That consistency in terms of selection
has created a situation where
this team knows exactly what it wants to do.
They’ve been much better defensively
in the second half of the campaign,
with Urko Gonzalez de Zarate
doing a good job of protecting
the back four in midfield.
Whenever their defence has been breached,
they’ve also been fortunate to have Joan Garcia in goal,
with the young keeper pulling off
some exceptional saves this season.
He could be quite busy in this match,
with Villarreal likely to have
much more of the ball and territory.
However, their ability to win
just five out of 15 at home in LaLiga this term
suggests they do sometimes struggle
to make that domination count,
and they’ve often been more effective on their travels.
That’s fairly typical of sides coached by Marcelino
whose counter-attacking style
does lend itself nicely to playing away.
They were well beaten away by Celta Vigo in midweek though,
but Eric Bailly’s early red card
was a major turning point in that match.
Marcelino will want a strong response
from his players on Sunday,
in a game they need to win
as they chase Champions League qualification.
However, they still have a major injury doubt
over Alex Baena who would have been
the player most capable of breaking open
an organised Espanyol backline
that has only let in one goal
in their last three away games.
It currently looks unlikely
that Baena will recover in time
to play any significant role in this match,
and with Espanyol playing
with real confidence all of a sudden,
I can see the visitors being very competitive here.
