Napoli remain in the driving seat
in the race for the Scudetto
as we approach the final matchday.
Given that both the Neapolitans and Inter
could finish level on points,
a play off would be played this coming Monday night
to decide the title.
This is why both Inter and Napoli
are playing on Friday evening
whilst all the other eight matches
take place on Sunday.
Napoli have had the chance
in the past two matchdays
to pull clear and avoid the need
of having to go into the final day
without certainty that they would be champions.
Back to back draws against Genoa and Parma
have allowed Inter to gain ground
and they could perhaps even thank
the intervention of VAR in Inter’s match against Lazio
for not actually finding themselves
going into this weekend’s game in second place
and relying on an Inter slip up.
Whichever way you look at it,
it has been a far better campaign for Napoli
than the one that they suffered through last year.
The hangover from winning
their first league title since the 1980s
resulted in the team going through three coaches
and losing top scorer Victor Osimhen.
Their dismal 10th place finish
has been something of a blessing though
as Antonio Conte hasn’t had to worry
about any European football at all.
This has meant the league has been their sole focus
and despite the loss of
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG in January,
the team has managed to maintain its form
throughout the full campaign.
Cagliari arrive in Naples
with little to play for
as they’re now confirmed to be playing Serie A football
next season following
a trouncing of Venezia last time out.
However, their fans have a historic rivalry with Napoli
and would love nothing more
than to spoil their big day.
All logic points to a comfortable Napoli win
as they have a much superior side
but they have stuttered under pressure of late
and rumours of an Antonio Conte departure
isn’t helping settle the group
at what is a crucial time.
It will be shock if Napoli can’t do it
but stranger things have happened.
Prediction: Napoli 2-0 Cagliari

Inter could be heading into their last game
as leaders knowing full well
that a win would see them comfortably over the line
and ready to retain their Scudetto.
However, a last-minute VAR induced penalty for Lazio
at San Siro on Sunday night
saw Pedro snatch all three points away from the Nerazzurri
and caused absolute pandemonium on
the respective benches.
Both managers received their marching orders
and there was still time for Inter sub Marko Arnautovic
to miskick in front of an open goal
and have a winner disallowed for offside.
Inter quite rightly felt very hard done by
as the decision to award a penalty
was certainly a harsh one
given that the referee had been a matter of yards away
at the time and dismissed appeals immediately
as he believed that Yann Bisseck had
his hands behind his back.
Whilst the decision had costly consequences
for Simone Inzaghi’s team,
in all honesty, the Scudetto hasn’t been left in the balance
because of that moment alone.
Even in recent weeks,
Inter have dropped a 2-0 lead to Parma,
lost to Roma and Bologna
and conceded a late equaliser to direct rivals Napoli.
Parts of this can certainly be attributed to tiredness
as compared to Napoli,
they’ve played more than 1500 minutes extra
as a result of their runs
in the Champions League and Coppa Italia.
Whilst their squad is stacked
compared to most of those in Italy,
their lack of real quality depth,
especially in the striker positions
has been a little bit of an achilles heel.
They’ve spent portions of the campaign
without key players such as
Hakan Calhanoglu, Lautaro Martinez,
Marcus Thuram and Denzel Dumfries
at varying times due to muscle fatigue injuries
caused by a heavy fixture list.
The short trip to Como
won’t be a walk in the park for them
as at this moment in time
the side from the Sinigaglia
are in their best run of form of the season.
Six wins from seven
has lifted them into the top half
and they will certainly want
to make life difficult for Inter
and finish a positive season
with a win in front of their own fans.
It would be a tragedy
if this Inter side finishes the season with no silverware
as they’ve been one of Europe’s
best teams all season long.
Sadly for them,
too many slip ups in key moments
looks likely to cost them the title.

Venezia vs Juventus
The top three in the league
are guaranteed Champions League football
and Monza are definitely playing Serie B football next year
but aside from that,
much is still to be decided.
This tie between Venezia and Juventus
is possibly the one that has the most in jeopardy
as both teams have their aims
well and truly within reach.
For the hosts,
they are inches away from surviving in the top flight
which would be a considerable achievement.
For much of the campaign,
it has been profound struggle
for Eusebio Di Francesco’s team.
This was to be expected
given their very limited budget
and lack of incomings
since their promotion from Serie B
via the play offs last season.
The loss of top scorer Joel Pohjanpalo
to second division Palermo wasn’t ideal either
and in truth
they haven’t been able to replace his goals.
They have certainly become harder to beat though
as the season has gone on
but a thumping away to Cagliari last time out
was a real blow
as they now need to pull off the unlikely
and defeat Juventus
and hope that neither Lecce or Empoli win.
It would be a monumental result
and a truly incredible shock if they were to stay up
but stranger things have happened.
One thing that counts against them though
is the fact that their opponents Juve
have a lot at stake themselves.
Interim boss Igor Tudor was brought in
at the end of the March international break
off the back of the failed Thiago Motta experiment
with the sole remit
of getting the Bianconeri into the top four.
Whilst they have been very hard to beat this season,
they’ve never really managed to play
any sort of aggressive football
that some of the personnel in the squad are capable of.
All that matters to the club though
is they get a win in this final game
and confirm their place
in the Champions League next season
so that they can help balance the books.
Venezia will be whole hearted and give this their all
but it’s very hard to see them toppling The Old Lady.

Lazio vs Lecce
Lazio’s hopes of reaching the Champions League
are still well and truly alive
after they completed a smash and grab job
away to a rather shell shocked Inter
at San Siro on Sunday night.
Marco Baroni’s side
pegged back the Nerazzurri twice
in the final ten minutes,
including scoring a last-minute
VAR assisted penalty,
to steal a point on the road
and keep the gap between themselves
and the top four at just two points.
With Bologna and Fiorentina
directly below them losing form
at absolutely the wrong time,
it would mean Lazio would have to lose their last game
to miss out on Europe altogether
which is very unlikely.
Whilst the Champions League
is obviously the aim and without a doubt
the holy grail in terms of European football
due to the financial gains
as well as raise in prestige that it brings,
it is quite an achievement
that Lazio are all but guaranteed
a place in some form of European competition next season
when you look at the financial disparity
between themselves and the other teams up there.
Almost all of the top eight (aside from Bologna)
have far outspent Lazio in recent years
and given that they have a manager
who hasn’t much experience
of managing a side challenging
at this end of the Serie A table
they’ve had a fantastic season.
The same cannot be said for Lecce though
who have had a nightmare campaign.
A series of heavy defeats
early on in the campaign
saw the reign of Luca Gotti come to an end
and although initially things seemed to improve
under his replacement Marco Giampaolo,
it has ended up that the team
have continued to struggle
across the entire season.
Their inability to score goals
has been a huge problem
and could well be the deciding factor
in terms of staying up or going down for them.
With Lazio knowing a win in front of their own fans
could bring them Champions League football,
expect them to show no mercy
on toothless Lecce.
Lecce will be praying that Empoli lose.
Prediction: Lazio 3-0 Lecce

Empoli vs Verona
It truly is now or never
for Roberto D’Aversa’s Empoli
in terms of trying to keep hold
of their Serie A place for next season.
After a surprisingly promising start
to the campaign under their new coach,
it looked as if this season
was going to be something different
for the side from the Castellani.
Promising young talents
such as Lorenzo Colombo and Sebastiano Esposito
were brought in on loan from each of the Milan clubs
and they were able to hit the ground running immediately.
However, a run of losses in mid-winter
saw the team fall into complete free fall
and ended up with them
dropping down the table at a truly alarming rate.
The fall from comfortable mid-table
down to the relegation places wasn’t immediate
and only took place in the past month,
but a run of just two league wins
(incidentally in their two most recent matches)
since the 8th December’s 4-1 win away to Verona
has seen them bury themselves in real trouble.
They must win
and wish for losses for Parma and Lecce
if they are to beat the drop.
Their upcoming opponents,
managed by ex-Empoli boss Paolo Zanetti
aren’t actually mathematically safe themselves.
They sit just three points clear of the drop zone
and three defeats in their last five
has meant that the final weekend
is one that has now become
unnecessarily nervy for them.
Expect Empoli to channel
the energy of their last day heroics
from last season and beat Verona.
Thankfully for Verona,
there is most likely to be
at least one team below them that loses
and they should stay in Serie A for next season.

Atalanta vs Parma
It has been another excellent league season
for Atalanta as they go into the final weekend
knowing that they will be playing
Champions League football
once again next year.
Some have however begun to speculate
has to whether or not
we should now be judging
the success of La Dea slightly differently
now as they are definitely beginning
to establish themselves as top six regulars
rather than overachievers.
It has now been almost a decade
since their first foray into the top four places
and they’ve finished in them
more than they’ve finished out of them
since Gian Piero Gasperini
first had them finish there in 2017.
However, this year has slightly been marred
by a weak Coppa Italia performance
and a shock Champions League exit
at the hands of a lesser fancied Club Brugge.
Rumours around their manager’s future
continue to linger
as links to the soon to be vacant Roma job
have continued to persist.
Regardless of harsh criticism,
it still must be looked on
as La Dea achieving their goal
of reaching the Champions League
and they will want to finish off the campaign
with a win in front of their own fans,
especially if it is to be Gasperini’s final match.
Parma will have been hoping
to see them in a charitable mood
as they are still in the midst
of a relegation battle.
Christian Chivu’s men
are picking up points here and there
and even against top sides
such as Napoli and Inter in recent weeks
but they aren’t yet guaranteed survival.
Atalanta will show no sympathy though.
Parma’s hope is that results go their way
and they frustrate La Dea for as long as possible
as they did to Napoli last Sunday.

Torino vs Roma
It was truly beautiful
to see the fantastic send-off
that Claudio Ranieri received from the Roma fans
prior to their win over Milan on Sunday night.
Whilst you never quite know with Ranieri,
what appeared to be his last showing
in front of his beloved Olimpico
turned out to be one of magic
as his team managed to pick up
a vitally important three points
in their bid to perform a minor miracle
and finish fourth
by the close of play on Sunday night.
In a heated contest with Milan,
the Giallorossi powered past the Rossoneri
and kept themselves just a point behind Juventus
going into this final weekend.
Given that they sat in the lower reaches of the league
prior to Ranieri coming in and rescuing them
it is remarkable that they even have a chance at this stage.
European football seemed impossible
given the state that they were in under Ivan Juric
but even should the worst-case scenario happen,
they will be playing some form
of European football next year.
Just when it looked
as if Ranieri has signed off excellently
on his glittering managerial career last year
by keeping Cagliari in the top flight,
this season could well be an even better way to sign off
if Venezia can do them a favour.
Venezia’s old boss Paolo Vanoli
is now in charge of Torino
who host Roma in the final day clash
and it is safe to say
that they’ve achieved a fairly solid par score
for the campaign.
A finish around half way up
falls nicely in line with predictions
as well as expectations.
They won’t roll over for Roma
but it is hard to see them
mustering enough quality to beat them.
King Claudio deserves to ride off into
the sunset with a win.

Milan vs Monza
This campaign
is one that both sides
will be very keen to see the back of.
For Milan,
it has been one of huge disappointment
aside from winning the Supercoppa.
Neither Portuguese manager
that they have appointed
has managed to get the team
performing on a consistent enough basis
to have them challenging
for the Champions League places.
Paulo Fonseca didn’t make the new year
and although Sergio Conceicao
won the Supercoppa in his first week as coach,
he looks set to depart
at the end of the campaign
having failed in his remit
to get the Rossoneri into the top four.
They’ve spent money
and invested heavily too
but signings such as
Alvaro Morata, Emerson Royal and Joao Felix
have flattered to deceive
and it has proven to be
a really disappointing campaign
for a team who moved on from Stefano Pioli
as they believed that
he had taken them as far as he could.
Still things could be worse.
They could be Monza.
It has been
an absolutely horrifying campaign
for Milan’s near neighbours
as they’ve rarely had anything
to cheer at any point all campaign.
They’ve lost twenty seven of their 38 games
and only won three times
which has meant that being a fan
of the side from the Brianteo
has been truly bleak.
A fire sale of their best players
such as Daniel Maldini and Warren Bondo in January
hasn’t helped
and in all honesty,
the team will be thankful
that this horrible campaign
is coming to an end.
Next step for them
is to ensure they handle
the transition back into the second division
better than the likes of SPAL, Benevento and Crotone
in recent years
who have dropped all the way down
to the third tier
not too long after being in the top flight.
Their players must soak in
what could be their last trip to San Siro
for at least twelve months.

전력에 큰 손실이 되었고,
이 참담한 시즌이
끝나가고 있다는 사실만이
유일한 위안입니다.

Just when people thought
that last season could’ve been something of
a fluke for Bologna,
this season has arguably gone one better.
Last season, Thiago Motta
masterminded a rise up the table
that saw them finish in the Champions League spaces
and brought about breakout seasons
for the likes of Riccardo Calafiori,
Joshua Zirkzee and Lewis Ferguson.
Whilst all of Motta, Calafiori and Zirkzee
have moved onto pastures new,
Ferguson has stayed
and has gained his reward
by managing to captain the Rossoblu
to their first piece of domestic silverware
in over fifty years.
The surprise Coppa Italia win
has been a reward
for two years of real hard work
and quality performances
but that has only been able to come about
due to some rather brilliant work off the field.
Sporting Director Giovanni Sartori
has worked magic on a team once again
off the back of similarly heroic genius jobs
that he managed to do at Chievo and Atalanta
and this year he has been able
to help support Motta’s replacement, Vincenzo Italiano,
quite brilliantly.
The former Fiorentina boss
finally has a trophy to his name
having lost the Europa Conference League final
in back to back years in his previous job
and it’s safe to say
he more than deserves the success.
To sign off with a win
that could lift them back
into the hectically busy European places,
dependant on other results,
could well be a great way to head into the summer.
Genoa could well be playing
their last game under Patrick Vieira
as his success at Il Grifone
has seen him linked
with other more high-profile jobs.
They’ll work hard and be resolute
which could result in a low scoring game.
Bologna should have enough though.

Udinese vs Fiorentina
This game is an absolute must win for Fiorentina
if they are to have any chance
of finishing in a European place.
It has been a long old season
for La Viola this campaign
as they’ve fought to try and compete in
Europe and domestically
with a fairly young and recently assembled side
under a new and relatively inexperienced manager.
When at their best,
they’ve been quite simply scintillating
which has resulted in Moise Kean
having his best career season to date.
Some of their attacking football
has been simply magnificent
and their run in early winter
prior to Christmas
had them in the top four race.
Sadly, they’ve plateaued a little
due to a number of injuries to players
and the fatigue of spending a third successive season
playing weekend to Thursday
and travelling across far flung areas of Europe
in the Conference League.
It would be nice for them
to finish with a win
but they will find Udinese desperate to do the same
in front of their home fans
in what has been a rather strange campaign for them.
Largely it has been an intriguing one
for fans of the side from Friuli
as a new manager and Sporting Director combo
was installed prior to the start of the season.
Relatively unknown coach Kosta Runjaic
has been ably supported
by former left back Director Federico Balzaretti
and at times
has managed to bring about more exciting football
than fans have been used to in recent years.
Unfortunately, a rather dismal end to the campaign
has seen them miss out on a top half finish
but they’ll be keen to end well at home.
This scoreline could be anything
as both sides will throw caution to the wind.
There’s likely to be goals.

프리울리 지역 팬들에게는
흥미로운 시즌이었고,
새 감독 코스타 룬야이치와
디렉터 페데리코 발자레티의
조합은 때때로
최근 몇 년 간 보기 힘들었던
흥미로운 경기를 만들어냈습니다.
하지만 시즌 말미의 부진으로
상위권 도약에는 실패했고,
이번 홈경기에서 좋은 마무리를 원할 것입니다.
