Celta Vigo vs Real Betis


This game sees Spain’s two Europa League 
candidates meet, 
with the fixture brought forward from matchday six, 
when the clubs will have European commitments.


Celta Vigo have made a slightly 
slow start after an excellent 2024/25 campaign.


They were caught cold by Getafe on matchday one, 
with the South Madrid club executing 
the perfect gameplan, 
as they won 2-0 at Balaidos thanks to 
a counter-attacking approach.


It was quite a strong response from
Claudio Giraldez’s side at the weekend though.


While it was another match of few chances, 
they looked to be on their way towards 
an excellent road win thanks to a goal from Javi Rueda.


However, 
the ball broke to Mateu Morey who fired 
home a late leveller for the Balearic Islanders.


I can see Celta finding this game much more to their liking.


As was not the case in their opening two fixtures, 
they’ll be up against an opponent 
that will try to play a similar style of football to their own, 
and that should create more space for their flair players.


Of the two teams, 
they are also in a slightly stronger position in 
terms of being able to successfully 
rotate from the weekend.


Carl Starfelt is their only injury absentee, 
while all of the Galician club’s summer signings, 
including the likes of Ferran Jutgla, 
Bryan Zaragoza and Ionut Radu were registered 
with no issues.


Betis, by contrast, 
have got more significant selection problems.


They’re missing talisman Isco and winger 
Abde Ez to long-term problems.


Meanwhile, Nelson Deossa, Diego Llorente and 
Marc Roca are also unlikely to be involved 
as they fight their way back to fitness.


The club are still trying to finalise a deal for Antony, 
who was so impressive on loan 
from Manchester United last term.


The uncertainty of that pursuit is also making it 
tough for them to do any other business, 
and they look light on quality in some key areas currently.


They were winners on Friday night, 
beating Alaves 1-0 in their first match at La Cartuja.


It was important they made a victorious start at 
their new temporary home, 
but they weren’t totally convincing.


This will be their toughest match of the new season so far.


With Manuel Pellegrini short on options in 
terms of bringing fresh legs in, 
I can see Betis falling to their first defeat.
